The Symphony of Night *M/UNISON/Opt TWO-PART The Symphony of Night Based on a Swedish Folk Tune BriLee Music the Voice of Choral Music Range: Unison/Opt 2 pt accompanied Mark Patterson Language: English Use: General Time: Approx. 3:23 *Difficulty: Moderate

2 Performance Notes The Symphony of Night is a setting of the Swedish Folk Tune BRED DINA VIDA VINGAR with new, original lyrics. The new poem by Mark Patterson describes the magical qualities of nightfall and the beauty of the starlit sky. As you sing this piece, strive for a supported, beautiful tone with four measure phrases. Giving energy to the dotted quarter notes and the tied quarter notes will help propel the phrases forward. The optional second part provides an opportunity for descant-style harmony, but make sure that it stays balanced with the melody. Finally, this piece presents a great platform for addressing diphthongs the word night is repeated throughout and often sustained. Work to sustain the first sound of the diphthong ( ah ) as long as possible, with a touch of ee (the second sound in this diphthong) right before the final consonant. About the Composer Dr. Mark Patterson is a nationally acclaimed composer, conductor and teacher. He is the Director of Music at Salisbury Presbyterian Church in Midlothian, Virginia, where he leads a comprehensive music program for adults, youth and children. Mark received his PhD in Fine Arts-Music Education with an emphasis in Choral Conducting from Texas Tech University and Master of Music and Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Patterson is frequently invited to conduct honor choirs and choral festivals across the United States and is often asked to lead workshops for choral directors. Dr. Patterson s compositions comprise a rich variety of styles for the sanctuary and the concert hall. Currently he has over 250 choral works in print as well as a solo piano collection, various musicals and choral compilations, and several volumes of vocal solos. Mark has been a consistent winner of the ASCAP Award in Composition for over ten years.
