2 Performance Notes The Symphony of Night is a setting of the Swedish Folk Tune BRED DINA VIDA VINGAR with new, original lyrics. The new poem by Mark Patterson describes the magical qualities of nightfall and the beauty of the starlit sky. As you sing this piece, strive for a supported, beautiful tone with four measure phrases. Giving energy to the dotted quarter notes and the tied quarter notes will help propel the phrases forward. The optional second part provides an opportunity for descant-style harmony, but make sure that it stays balanced with the melody. Finally, this piece presents a great platform for addressing diphthongs the word night is repeated throughout and often sustained. Work to sustain the first sound of the diphthong ( ah ) as long as possible, with a touch of ee (the second sound in this diphthong) right before the final consonant.
