MUSICAL THEATRE CONSERVATORY AUDITION GUIDE Auditions for 2016 Cardinal Gibbons Musical Theatre Conservatory s production of Guys and Dolls will be held on Tuesday, July 5 th from 9:00A.M.-5:00P.M. (arrival and sign in to begin at 8:30 A.M.) and Wednesday, July 6 th from 9:00 A.M. - 5 P.M. (arrival and sign in to begin at 8:30 A.M.) Auditions allow us to cast and assess the different types of talent we have to work with. However, in keeping with our educational mission, Conservatory auditions will have a much more relaxed pace. Everything that you need to know will be reviewed during our scheduled audition period. We will kick the first day off with an Audition Workshop led by the director and musical director. We ll walk through the audition process, with tips and pointers from the director, musical director, and choreographer. After that, we ll spend the day holding singing and dancing auditions. We re more than happy to answer any and ALL questions you have during this time. So if you don t know or aren t sure about anything--please ask! All camp counselors have been through this process many, many times and they are all eager to help you in any way that they can.

Please fill out the attached audition form in advance and bring it with you to the first day of auditions, along with one clear, simple photograph of your face (school pictures work fine any picture works fine) that you don t mind us keeping. Day one s process will be comprised of two parts: 1. Performance of several measures of a selected song 2. Performance of a taught dance combination. Day two (callbacks) will be a combination of singing and reading for specific roles in the show, along with a more advanced dance callback. We will provide all the materials you ll need for callbacks. Prepared Music Auditions** This summer we are requiring that all campers prepare their own song for the initial vocal audition (day one). The components of a successful vocal audition for any musical include the following. We ask that all those auditioning please follow these guidelines and directions: Sheet music in a secured binder or folder, easy to turn for the accompanist. Clearly marked beginning and ending measures for your piece One verse and chorus of chosen song (maximum). Must be from a stage or film musical (no pop or

rock songs). A note from the musical director: It is important to be familiar with the music from the show before coming to the auditions. Find something that is comfortable for your range and if possible in the style of Guys and Dolls. If you re looking for additional help in preparing your sheet music for the audition, we suggest reviewing this article which details exactly how sheet music should be arranged for an audition. http://tinyurl.com/sheetmusicgibbons Below you will find two websites that will be helpful when choosing and downloading a song for auditions. http://www.musicnotes.com/ http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/ We also have some free options that can be accessed via the link below. Please note that you will still need to make your own cuts. https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0b5htuod NgobuNU5QNXVIZkN6c1E&usp=sharing AUDITION DAY SCHEDULE FOR TUESDAY, JULY 5TH: 9:00-9:30 A.M.: Sign in, turn in audition form & picture, and meet counselors and staff 9:30-10:00 A.M.: Audition workshop & Orientation for

Character Breakdown for Guys and Dolls A list of character descriptions so campers can be familiar with the different roles before auditioning: Sky Masterson: Handsome gambler, A charming but self-assured gambler. Able to adapt to any situation but ready to reel off pre-prepared anecdotes regarding his view of the world. Despite his failings, Sky is immensely likeable and oozes style. Nathan Detroit : Feckless, adorable gambler. A facilitator of illegal gambling, Nathan maintains a distance by acting only as a broker; seldom a gambler. A consummate businessman with divided loyalties; he pacifies his fiancé Adelaide with vague promises of a marriage some time in the future. Nicely Nicely Johnson: Gambler. An eccentric gambler and one of Nathan s closest associates. Benny Southstreet: Gambler Arvide Abernathy: Sarah's grandfather. A member of the Save-a-Soul mission. A reasoned old man with a warm heart that harbors only the kindest intentions, even if he tends to be a little gullible. Rusty Charlie : Gambler Big Julie: Gambler. An intimidating hustler from Chicago. Temperamental. A sore loser. Although not necessarily a large man, stage presence and acting ability are the main requirements for this role. Harry the Horse : Gambler Lt. Brannigan : A policeman engaged in what he

perceives to be a battle of wits with Nathan to stop the craps game. Angie the Ox: male, spoken, cameo Joey Biltmore: male, spoken, cameo Calvin : Member of the Mission Band Crapshooters: male, chorus Sarah Brown : Prim Salvation Army office. An idealistic but sheltered missionary. Kind-hearted but like Sky, too categorical in her view of the world. Charisma, a natural beauty and a silky jazz voice are important attributes for this character. Adelaide : Comic, classic showgirl and Gambler's moll. A club singer and Nathan s long-suffering fiancée. Not the brightest of people. Weary of the disruption Nathan s involvement in the craps game causes to their relationship, she longs for quiet family life away from New York. General Matilda B. Cartwright : Salvation Army Matron. Regional direction of the Save-a-Soul mission. Authoritative through necessity but motivated by charity. Agatha Member of the Mission Band Martha: Member of the Mission Band Hot Box Girls: female, chorus, DANCER/singers BREAK A LEG!
