Inferring With Music Lyrics Assignments Your Students Will Love!

Musical Inferring & Predicting Inferring occurs when a reader uses clues to figure out information that is not provided while predictions occur when the reader uses what they know to guess what will happen later. Use the lyrics below to answer the inferring and predicting questions in the space provided. Do not read ahead in the lyrics. Base your answers on the section of text given. Carrie Underwood Two black Cadillacs driving in a slow parade. Headlights shining bright in the middle of the day. One is for his wife, The other for the woman who loved him at night. Two black Cadillacs meeting for the first time. Where do you think the two black Cadillacs are going? Why? What can you infer about the personality of the husband? What makes you think this? Carrie Underwood And the preacher said he was a good man, And his brother said he was a good friend But the women in the two black veils didn't bother to cry They took turns laying a rose down, Threw a handful of dirt into the deep ground He's not the only one who had a secret to hide How do the women and other family members feel about this tragedy? Give evidence What do you think the last line means? Who has a secret and what is the secret? What evidence did you use to make your prediction?

Carrie Underwood Two months ago his wife called the number on his phone. Turns out, he'd been lying to both of them for oh so long. They decided then He'd never get away with doing this to them. Two black Cadillacs, waiting for the right time The right time What can you infer about this phone conversation (who is talking on the phone, what do they discuss etc). Give evidence to support your inferences. Carrie Underwood It was the first and the last time they ever saw each other face to face They shared a crimson smile, and just walked away, And left the secret at the grave. Why you think the two women smiled at each other? What does the last line infer.

Use the lyrics below to answer the inferring and predicting questions in the space provided. Do not read ahead in the lyrics. Base your answers on the section of text given. Adele I heard that you're settled down That you found a girl and you're married now I heard that your dreams came true Guess she gave you things I didn't give to you What can you infer about the relationship between the speaker and the person she is talking to? What evidence did you use to come to this conclusion? Adele Old friend, why are you so shy? Ain't like you to hold back or hide from the light I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it I had hoped you'd see my face and that you'd be reminded That for me, it isn't over Where is the speaker at this point in the song? How do you know this? Make a prediction about how the person she is talking to will react. What makes you think this?

Adele Never mind, I'll find someone like you I wish nothing but the best for you, too Don't forget me, I begged, I remember you said Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead How did the conversation go? Discuss how you think the person reacted, what was said, and how they felt. Adele You know how the time flies Only yesterday was the time of our lives We were born and raised in a summer haze Bound by the surprise of our glory days Nothing compares, no worries or cares Regrets and mistakes, they're memories made Who would have known how bittersweet this would taste? Based on these lyrics, discuss how you think the speaker feels and what she will do now. Give evidence for your answer.

Use the lyrics below to answer the inferring and predicting questions in the space provided. Do not read ahead in the lyrics. Base your answers on the section of text given. Taylor Swift Drew looks at me I fake a smile so he won't see What I want and I need And everything that we should be I'll bet she's beautiful That girl he talks about And she's got everything That I have to live without Who is Drew? What can you infer about him by what the speaker says? Give evidence. Taylor Swift Drew talks to me I laugh 'cause it's just so funny I can't even see Anyone when he's with me He says he's so in love He's finally got it right I wonder if he knows He's all I think about at night He's the reason for the teardrops on my guitar The only thing that keeps me wishing on a wishing star He's the song in the car I keep singing Don't know why I do What can you infer about the relationship between the speaker and Drew? Give evidence. Do you think they will end up together? Why or why not?

Justin Timberlake You were my sun You were my earth But you didn't know all the ways I loved you, no So you took a chance And made other plans But I bet you didn't think that they would come crashing down, no What can you infer about the relationship between these two people? How has it changed? Justin Timberlake You don't have to say, what you did, I already know, I found out from him Now there's just no chance, for you and me, there'll never be And don't it make you sad about it What happened to the relationship? Who was to blame? How do you know this?

Justin Timberlake You told me you loved me Why did you leave me, all alone Now you tell me you need me When you call me, on the phone Girl I refuse, you must have me confused With some other guy Your bridges were burned, and now it's your turn To cry, cry me a river What emotions do you think the speaker and the girl are feeling from these lyrics? Give evidence to support your answer. Justin Timberlake I know that they say That somethings are better left unsaid It wasn't like you only talked to him and you know it (Don't act like you don't know it) All of these things people told me Kept messing with my head (Messing with my head) You should've picked honesty Then you may not have blown it. Make a prediction about the future of this relationship. Give reasons for your prediction.
