A shiny, icy sub stance cov ers all fur ni ture. KEVIN is trapped in the room.) KEVIN (in a re corded voice-over). Wel come back to THE AD VEN TURES OF IN VIN CI BLE BOY, De - fender of Youth. When we last left our hero [a nor mal boy in ap pear ance, but born of su per hu man strength, agil ity, and in tel li gence], he had just been cap tured by his evil arch en emy, the Ice Queen (The ICE QUEEN en ters wear ing an ice-blue vil lain ess cos tume [slightly re sem bling pas tel-blue hos pi tal scrubs].) [the fa mous ris ing fig ure skat ing star who trag i cally crashed through thin ice trans form ing her into a vil lain - ess with an ice heart] and her de voted lackey, Pup pet Man (PUPPET MAN en ters wear ing a mar i o nette out fit [also re mark ably re sem bling hos pi tal scrubs].) 9

To elim i nate fun, imag i na tion, and ev ery - thing that brings hap pi ness. To cre ate a world where pain, se ri ous ness, and logic dom i nate the world. To es - tab lish a planet where only the Ice Queen will rule.

KING CHEMO 11 KEVIN. How do you plan to ac com plish this? ICE QUEEN. By steal ing toys, freez ing amuse ment parks, and mak ing bor ing tele vi sion. If all else fails, we ll kill all the happy peo ple. (PUPPET MAN laughs evilly.) Why are you laugh ing in my pres ence? PUPPET MAN. My Queen, it was an evil laugh, not a happy laugh. ICE QUEEN. I don t care. (ICE QUEEN pulls PUPPET MAN s string so PUPPET MAN slaps him self.) PUPPET MAN. Sorry. ICE QUEEN. I could use you, In vin ci ble Boy. Your su per - hu man strength, agil ity, and in tel li gence would help us. What do you say, part ners? KEVIN. Never. ICE QUEEN. Maybe we can change your mind. Pup pet Man, give him the pill. PUPPET MAN (brings out a pill). This will help you cool off. KEVIN. I won t take it. ICE QUEEN. I think you will. (ICE QUEEN opens a drawer and dry ice smoke falls out as she se lects a tor - ture de vice [re sem bling a stetho scope]. ICE QUEEN places the tor ture de vice on KEVIN s back.) KEVIN. AAAAHHHHH! KEVIN. Four days to es cape this fiend ish im pris on ment and to save that poor girl. First I must avoid my ice sur - gery, then I must find the girl. The ad ven tures of In vin - ci ble Boy, De fender of Youth have be gun again! (KEVIN ex its with IV to dra matic fan fare.) MON DAY SCENE 2 (The fan tasy mu sic fades into a sound col lage of a hos - pi tal. Lights re veal a small room very sim i lar to the set of the last scene, but now clearly a hos pi tal room. Che mo ther apy and You: How a Nu tri tious Diet Aids Treat ment. Thanks. (ME LISSA adds new pam phlets to her hoard of in for ma tion.) DOC TOR. Do you have any ques tions about the pam phlets we gave you last time? ME LISSA. I don t think so. I knew most of the in for ma - tion al ready. The one on clin i cal tri als was pretty in ter - est ing, but the gen eral one about can cer was so sim ple. I think it would be more ap pro pri ate for a youn ger age group. DOC TOR. I ll make a note of that. ME LISSA. So what s go ing to hap pen to day?

KING CHEMO 15 DOC TOR. Let s look and see what tests you re sched uled for ME LISSA. Oh, I m sched uled for a bone mar row test and a spi nal tap to make sure the can cer cells have n t come back. We ll be back shortly to be gin the treat - ment. ME LISSA. Should I buzz the call but ton to re mind you? DOC TOR. Only if we aren t here by 2:05. NURSE. I ll get Kevin so we can start his tests. (NURSE and DOC TOR exit. ME LISSA starts to read pam phlet. KEVIN sneaks into the room and sees ME - LISSA.) KEVIN. Hey! Don t read that! ME LISSA. What are you do ing in my room? (KEVIN rushes and takes the pam phlet away from her and starts jump ing up and down on the pam phlet.)

16 KING CHEMO KEVIN. Don t be lieve a word in this. ME LISSA. What are you do ing? KEVIN. I m de stroy ing the evil pro pa ganda from the Ice Queen. She gives it to ev ery one. (KEVIN shows ME - LISSA his pam phlet.) ME LISSA. What are you talk ing about? KEVIN. I m sav ing you from the evil vil lain ess who wants to de stroy us! (KEVIN rips up the pam phlets.) ME LISSA. You re rip ping up pam phlets on nu tri tion. KEVIN. You can thank me later. (KEVIN throws pam - phlets in trash.) ME LISSA. Who are you? KEVIN. Who am I? Who are you? ME LISSA. No, who are you? KEVIN. Who are you? ME LISSA. I asked first. KEVIN. I asked sec ond. NURSE (off-stage). Kevin! KEVIN. Shhhh! (KEVIN grabs ME LISSA and both hide be hind par ti tion. NURSE en ters and looks around. NURSE can t find KEVIN or ME LISSA.) NURSE. Kevin? Me lissa? (NURSE ex its. KEVIN and ME - LISSA come out from be hind the par ti tion.) ME LISSA. What are you do ing in my room, Kevin? KEVIN. Playing a game with the nurse, Me lissa. Don t worry he thinks it s lots of fun. So what brings you here? ME LISSA. Con sidering this is the can cer floor of a hos pi - tal, it s prob a bly a safe bet I have can cer.

KING CHEMO 17 KEVIN. Sassy. I like that. When were you di ag nosed? ME LISSA. That s none of your busi ness. KEVIN. You must be a rookie. You see, I ve been do ing this for over a year now. I m the king of che mo ther apy. If you have any ques tions, just ask me. I ve helped a lot of young kids get through che mo ther apy. ME LISSA. How do you help? KEVIN. I fill them in on what s re ally go ing on. For in - stance (KEVIN goes to the hall to check for signs of the DOC TOR.) You have to watch out for the doc tor. ME LISSA. Why? She s been very nice to me. KEVIN. Acting nice to you, but in re al ity she is pure (NURSE opens door and KEVIN and IV dive be hind cur - tain.) NURSE. I m sorry to dis turb you, Me lissa, but you have n t seen Kevin, have you? ME LISSA. Who? NURSE. I guess not. If you had met Kevin, you d re mem - ber. I m sure you ll meet him soon. He s an other leu ke - mia pa tient. Thanks any way. (NURSE ex its.) KEVIN. Hey, thanks. You re all right. ME LISSA. What is the doc tor re ally? KEVIN. Pure Evil. Che mo ther apy is an honor? KEVIN. No. Chemo is ter ri ble. The honor is be ing cho sen. It means you were too strong to be bro ken through the usual means. ME LISSA. Who wants to break us? KEVIN. The Powers That Be. (KEVIN pulls out his charts and maps.) See, there is some one out there try ing to con trol us Earth chil dren. Ob vi ously the en tire hos pi tal staff is in on the plan. I m not sure who s be hind it yet, but I think it s the doc tor. ME LISSA. And why do they want to con trol us? KEVIN. Not sure. Prob a bly for world dom i na tion. ME LISSA. Why are you tell ing me? KEVIN. My mis sion is to dis cover who they re ally are and save the world s chil dren from their evil plots. ME LISSA. Oh. (Going back to her jour nal.) KEVIN. What are you do ing?
