Configuring CKB Resources
MetaLib Resources MetaLib resources comprise: primarily databases, citation and full-text searchable Web sites library OPACs e-journals image collections other electronic information sources 13
Configuring Resources Workflow (initial) Configure resources for searching and linking: 1. Activate the resource 2. Link to Native Interface modify as needed 3. Hostname:Port review configuration notes 4. Database code provided by CKB, when needed 5. Authentication enter user/password, if needed 14
Key IRD Fields
Configuring Resources Workflow (final) Configure resources for searching and linking: 1. Activate the resource 2. Link to Native Interface modify as needed 3. Hostname:Port review configuration notes 4. Database code provided by CKB, when needed 5. Authentication enter user/password, if needed Modify IRD record 1. Change descriptive fields as needed 2. See Key IRD Fields handout for suggestions 16
Configuring Non-CKB Resources
Configuring Non-CKB Resources Link-Only
Non-CKB Resources Link-Only 1. Create a new IRD i. Fill in Key IRD Fields ii. Save and exit Link-Only resources appear in the database list with a link to the native interface and can be added to Categories. They cannot be used for federated search. 19
Configuring Non-CKB Resources Z39.50 TEMPLATES
Example: USC Catalog (1) IRD Fields for Searching and Linking web link: hostname:port: database code: authentication: http://www.usc.edu/libraries/ library.usc.edu:2200 unicorn freely available, not needed (2) MetaLib Z39.50 TEMPLATE Configuration OPAC_UNICORN_TEMP 21
Non-CKB Resources Z39.50 1. Contact vendor for Z39.50 searching details hostname:port, database code, authentication 2. Find the correct Z39.50 TEMPLATE in the CKB. 3. Create a new IRD i. Fill in Key IRD Fields ii. Save and exit 4. Add a new configuration i. COPY: make a local copy of the TEMPLATE 5. Restart the Z39.50 Gate 22
Configuring Non-CKB Resources EXTERNALS
Non-CKB Resources HTTP 1. Create a new IRD i. Fill in the details ii. Save and exit 2. Write a search program to search the resource i. Simple searching? Try EXTERNAL_JUMP (Simple) ii. Programming required? Write a full EXTERNAL program 24
Troubleshooting Resources
Troubleshooting Resources Case One: This Resource Has Never Worked! Do other things from this vendor work? Is your password correct (back door vs front door)? Is IP registration of the MetaLib server required? Did you double-check the IRD? Have you read the Configuration Notes? Try our server-side testing tools (YAZ, MLWP) Contact the vendor, Ex Libris Support 26
Troubleshooting Resources Case Two: It Used to Work. It Stopped Working... Has anything else stopped working? Have you recently run a CKB Update? Have you made the necessary manual changes? Has your subscription lapsed? Has your firewall configuration changed? Contact the customer listserv, check in with the vendor, speak to Ex Libris Support 27
