For most of us these are simple physical and mental tasks that we take for granted. When done well, books provide learning, escape, drama, comedy, or transcendence. The theme of the Chicago Hand Bookbinders 2006 Exhibition was Books About Books, and these books were done very well indeed. This show brought inspiration from some of the Midwest s most talented bookbinders. The examples of fine bookbinding included a heartfelt reconstruction to a first edition 4 of de Saint-Exupery s Wind, Sand and Stars. Centro del bel Libro Ascona is a magical assembly of leatherwork and handmade paper covers. The elegant bindings seen in Learning to Read in the British Library and The Name of the Rose are delicate treatments that reference traditional materials and bindings. There were also the one-ofkind artist books such as Book with Wings, a dramatic, angelic construction of walnut wings that protect painted abaca and cotton pages. Fahrenheit 451 is a timely piece on censorship inspired by the Ray Bradbury classic. This new exhibit showcased the work of the Chicago Hand Bookbinders and featured twenty-six books created by twenty-five binders from six states. The theme Books About Books was chosen to give members of this group the freedom to express the full range of the bookbinders craft.over many years the Chicago Hand Bookbinders have shown a great diversity of skill and imagination, and this newest exhibit offered up strong and unique craftwork. Chicago Hand Bookbinders was founded in 1978 to promote awareness, understanding, and appreciation of books made by hand. CHB members are amateur, student and professional binders and anyone interested in the book arts. Our aims are to learn from one another through sharing of skills and techniques; to educate the public through exhibitions and demonstrations; and to encourage the highest standards in the craft of bookbinding. Dave Coulter For more information, write Chicago Hand Bookbinders PO Box 802998, Chicago, IL 60680. The exhibition is online at www.karenhanmer.com/chb2006/

DESIGN: THE OTHER SIDE OF ART BY JEAN WILSON 1. Longer names will require a narrower nib. The first two classes an art student faces in college are Drawing 101 and Design 101. Drawing is an obvious prerequisite for any art major. Design is just as important, but unless you have taken design, you may not realize what role design plays in the creative process. In my classes for adults, I usually start the students with some basic design exercises. At first, they have no idea what I mean by design, but by the end of two hours they realize that they already have many of the concepts in their head and have been using them. This article will be the first in a series designed to help the reader who may not have taken a formal design class but is interested in learning some very useful tools. If you Google elements of design you will find many sites with lists and definitions. I encourage you to spend time reading whatever you find on the subject. Every list has some 10 variation and you may find information that resonates with you more than what I am offering here. My list of the elements of design includes: line, shape, form, color, tone, texture, and space. If you think of the periodic table of elements that you learned about in chemistry, you may recall that the elements are the basic building blocks of everything in the natural world. If you look at any picture or piece of art, you can identify these basic elements of design within the picture. If you think of all the different majors in art, you may notice that design is sometimes a part of the field. Graphic design and interior design are two examples. Within any major, students are given a variety of assignments where they must explore the elements of design. The assignment for lettering artists is to create an artistic envelope that illustrates each of 2. Keep your angles to a minimum. Strong diagonals create clumsy triangles. the elements of design. A postage stamp is not a very large picture, but if you look at any stamp, you will be able to see at least one of the elements sitting there waiting for you to use in your design. If you are a book artist, create a book structure of your choice and on each page choose a photo from a magazine to illustrate one of the elements. Or you may choose a blank book and fill the pages with examples that illustrate the elements. Another way to present the assignment to the book artists is to have each person choose seven pictures that appeal to them. Then have them go through the pictures and decide which one is their favorite example of each element. When I present these assignments in a class, all of the students are familiar with the words yet often ask, Is this right? They are very hesitant to commit to a picture. I assure them that almost every element can be found in every picture. It is not a matter of right and wrong, rather a matter of what jumps out at you. Shape and form are the only two where there might be a right and wrong. Ideally, the shape example should have some representation of a flat shape on a fairly flat surface and the form example will be some image that is three dimensional. To illustrate each of these design elements, I have chosen to complete the assignment for lettering artists. Remember, each envelope is used to represent a specific element of design, but all of the elements can be found in each envelope. Line When we think of lines, the most obvious stamp is anything with an American flag. For my assignment, I used Neuland and variations of the bold, chunky style.

FREEDOM TO CREATE WITH HANDMADE PAPER BY LINDA COLEON Flax leaves quiver in the hot bubbling pot filled with water and soda ash. Stirring the pot of cut leaves, the papermaker envisions the richly textured papers the plant will yield. After it has been cooked to remove its fleshy parts, the leaves will be beaten into fine fibers. Sheets of pulp will be pulled using a mould and deckle, pressed and then used to create a work of art created with handmade papers. The process is time consuming, but papermakers enjoy this sensuous, hands-on process of making paper that is integrated with a book s concept, design and structure. They savor the process of creating paper that can be used to enhance their work. A special magic and wonder occurs from this process, giving them the freedom and power to control all elements that comprise their creations. Aloha, Coleon. Reveals the special meanings of aloha. Kepaniwai, Coleon. Speaks of a battle fought long ago in the island s valley. 20 Linda Coleon Hawaii s culture, history and environment are often sources of inspiration for artist Linda Coleon, a native of the region. In her most recent book Aloha, she made papers from banana foliage growing in her yard. The banana paper is an earthy brown, speckled, with hints of ancient times that adds to the mood of the old Hawaiian prints. It has a coptic binding with stubs that are printed with a kapa design. By creating paper for my books, I am able to determine the weight, texture and hue to best complement tone, voice and concept, says Coleon. Sweet Maui is another book that makes use of paper to enhance the concept of the book. Signatures and cover papers are made of sugar cane leaves from the fields of Maui. Inside, there is an original poem about the lush, green sugar cane that blankets the island and the immigrants who toiled in the fields.

MINI BOOK REVIEW BY RONA CHUMBOOK Books with Girth by Cherryl Moote. 2005. 240 pages. 8-1/2" x 11". Spiral- Bound. $45.00 We all know how good it feels when a dear friend or relative comes to visit, and the time together turns out to be even sweeter than we d anticipated. That s exactly how I felt after a nice long visit with Cherryl Moote s newest book, Books with Girth. As soon as this book came out, I wanted to review it because I trusted that this experienced artist/bookbinder would not disappoint. So when it arrived at my front porch, I dropped everything and dove into it like a kid set free in a video game store. I m pleased to report that Moote s new book now ranks among my absolute favorite books that inform people like me who know just enough about the time-honored art of making books, but who need a lot more instructions, illustrations, and examples to feel totally confident. Like Shereen LaPlantz who broke new ground with her must-have Cover to Cover,Moote takes a direct, no-fuss, can-do 48 Books with Girth is the fifth book in a best-selling series of bookbinding and paper crafting books by Moote, a multitalented teacher, calligrapher, bookbinder and paper artist. approach to binding that takes the mystery out of even the most complex book forms. Intended for people with some background in bookbinding, this superb instructional manual covers mostly complex books that have thick spines hence the title. The book forms Moote presents range from multi-signature sewn books to multidimensional folded forms, and include coptic, piano-hinge, star, tunnel, longstitch, coptic, interlocking signatures, The Secret Belgian Binding and Spectabular Books. Books with Girth contains complete written instructions with clear figuring and photographs for fifteen book forms and seven boxes and cases, suggestions for variations, a full chapter on knots and stitches, instructions for a simple kumihimo braid, handy math tricks and conversion charts, as well as several templates. I ve already played with several of the formats and invited some paper arts buddies to join me in making a mock-up of the Spectabular book. It came together quickly thanks to Moote s very clear instructions, and I m eager to use that format to make my own books. Moote has a special talent for showcasing her teaching skills in a very natural, straightforward way. For example, she tackles the topic of measurements head-on by boldly introducing each format with a section entitled, Let me Do the Math. As a longtime teacher and bookmaker, Moote understands that the only way to make an effective mock-up, which is the essential prelude to making a successful book, is to figure out the right measurements and proportions first. In this book, Moote takes bookbinding to a higher level and reveals her obvious passion for the time-honored craft. It s If you want to learn how to create oneof-a-kind sewn journals, artists books, collaborative books, sketchbooks, travel diaries and lots more, this book will simplify and enhance your entire creative process. a tricky balancing act, but she manages the task deftly and with considerable humor at the same time. Calligraphers will particularly enjoy the section and chapter headings that are a nod to Reggie Ezell, a dedicated and talented calligraphy teacher. A few of his expressions like fixin to get ready to start and I ll tell you when you are older have inspired Moote s titling in this volume. We tend to associate girth with weight and bulk, not always something we like to have around like those extra holiday pounds. However, when it comes to this book, girth is definitely a good thing and worth keeping around for years to come.
