By Progster Document initiated on 28-Jul-2016 Recording KARMA OASYS (KO) Software into Cubase Setup and Workflow Recording KARMA OASYS (KO) software output into Cubase This setup will let Cubase intermediate between KO and the OASYS during the recording process, capturing moves from both. Use the CC control for the chord pads. Loop the KARMA OASYS RTC Transmit/Receive Port/Channel from KO to Cubase. Connect all the non-rtc MIDI Ins and Outs from KO from/to the OASYS keyboard. This ensures that a) KO UI actions are displayed on and sound the OASYS b) OASYS ctrl surface actions drive KO and are reflected in the KO UI
On the Cubase side two tracks are used during recording. These are labeled '1 Ctrl' and '2 Ctrl'. '1 Ctrl' at Rec time: Note: If we were to directly playback '1 Ctrl', the input and output would be changed to look like this: However, don't do this. A better, clearer workflow for playback (PB) is presented below, using '3 Karma Ctrl PB'. '2 Ctrl' at Rec time: Recording the 2 tracks as per above will ensure that all the control information is captured, both that which comes from the KO UI, and that which comes from the OASYS control surface and keys.
Local Control at the keyboard should be On during recording, else lead melody lines and pad "guide notes" will not be heard. Note though that '2 Ctrl' also captures non-control melody line info (if you played any during recording). Thus, this track, as captured, needs to be routed to two different destinations at playback time. Our two tracks as captured contain '1 Ctrl' UI control info '2 Ctrl' control surface control info key-based control info melody line info At PB time, a problem is that the melody line info must be routed directly to the OASYS from Cubase because there is no path available thru KO back out to the OASYS. KO accepts control information via Transmit/Receive - Port/Channel and this control information instructs the KO modules to play, but there is no provision for passing raw notes out to the OASYS. Note: Unlike KARMA Motif (KARMA v3)
Reorganizing Ctrl and Melody Information In Cubase, the two control tracks (indeed, any MIDI tracks) may be combined by a) dragging one on top of the other, then b) using the glue tool to make the two coincident tracks into one. (If you don't glue them, they remain two tracks and the top one can simply be dragged back off of the bottom one.) In this manner it is simple and quick to combine the control information from the KO software and the OASYS control surface. The next problem is to take out the melody note information and put it on its own track to be routed back to the OASYS at PB time. The Logical Editor in Cubase can do this easily. I have prepared a preset: 'Melody Notes to New Track' Sequence of actions to Record and prep for Playback Record 2 tracks of control information (from KO and from OASYS) Copy and paste each recorded part, placing the copies both on the pre-existing designated '3 KARMA Ctrl PB' track. (Pasting destination is the highlighted track at the left locator position) Glue Ctrl PB track to combine all the recorded control (+ melody) information into a single track/part. Operate the Logical Editor 'Melody Notes to New Track' on the new combined part to extract the melody info to a new part. Drag the new melody part to the pre-existing designated Melody PB track. Cut and paste track names to properly name the new parts (i.e. 'KARMA Ctrl PB' and 'Melody PB to Kbd' ) Below are pictures of the above process, proceeding in order. After recording:
Before gluing: After gluing: Doing the melody extraction (source part is selected): After melody extraction (observe new temporary extracted track): Fully cleaned-up final configuration, ready for playback, saving, etc. Extracted melody part has been dragged to designated PB track and renamed (manually), temporary extraction track has been deleted. Original recorded tracks are muted, new separated control and melody tracks are ready to play.
Playback the Control Track and Record All MIDI Set the KO module outputs to go to Cubase for recording and set Cubase do the recording while passing the KO MIDI on to the OASYS for monitoring. Remember also to monitor the melody, if desired, and/or to merge it after recording with the final MIDI output.
Misc Notes Cubase Part name location reminder It is easy to cut and paste the track name into the part name when necessary/desired. Metronome With OASYS Combi set to Katja's House, here is a "side-stick"y sound set for metronome in Cubase. (Transport -> Metronome Setup) In KO the setup for a side-stick sound is different:
-- Disable 'Record-Enable allows MIDI Thru' in Cubase In Cubase, turn off 'Record-Enable allows MIDI Thru'. This is because you do not ever want incoming RTC info from KO looping back to KO. With the setting above, you can record a Control Track (CT) from the OASYS into a Cubase track set to round-trip to the OASYS. Since Record-Enable IS NOT allowing MIDI Thru, there is no MIDI feedback (so long as you keep the track speaker icon Off) and the track is basically ready for playback immediately after recording. Though this doc is not about recording KARMA from the OASYS, you want to be able to record KARMA from either KO or the OASYS using a common Cubase project setup!
