The major objective of the Music Department is to cultivate, educate and nurture the musical talent and creativity of students. We will accomplish this through performance excellence, music literacy, history and exposure to a variety of musical styles and genres. Our goal is to make music a lifelong passion in each of our students lives. Concert Band (LNHS) This course fulfills the Arts or elective credit requirement for graduation. INSTRUMENTAL Course Description: This course is the study of instrumental music in a concert band setting. The primary units of study include the preparation of wind band repertoire from diverse style periods and representing a variety of genres. Course Recommendation: This course is recommended for students with prior playing experience on brass, woodwind or percussion instruments. Additional Registration Information: A rental fee will be charged for the use of district-owned instruments. All Concert Band students are expected to participate in the pep bands. Students are expected to adhere to the concert band and pep band schedules, and fulfill band activities as set forth in the total high school program. The number and nature of the first semester Concert Band will be determined by enrollment and instrumentation. Students may enroll and receive credit for this course more than once. This course meets semester two. Concert Band (LSHS) Prerequisite: Previous instrumental experience required. This course fulfills the Arts or elective credit requirement for graduation. Course Recommendation: This course is recommended for students with prior playing experience on saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and rhythm section (drum set, piano, guitar and bass). Additional Registration Information: A rental fee will be charged for the use of district-owned instruments. Jazz Band is an auditioned ensemble and those interested must set up an audition through the band director. The number and nature of the Jazz Band will be determined by enrollment and instrumentation. receive credit for this course more than once. LSHS only: All students earning acceptance into the Jazz Band must also be enrolled in one of the concert ensembles. Marching Band (LNHS) This course fulfills the Arts and elective requirement for graduation. Course Description: This course is the study of instrumental music in the marching band setting. The primary units of study include preparation of music and drill for public performance at football games parades and concerts. The students will demonstrate learning through assessments, written critiques and public performance. Course Recommendation: This course is recommended for any student with prior brass, woodwind or percussion playing experience. Additional Registration Information: A rental fee will be charged for the use of district-owned instruments. Students are expected to adhere to the marching band and pep band schedules, and fulfill band activities as set forth in the total high school program. Students may enroll and receive credit for this course more than once. Symphonic Band (LSHS) Prerequisite: Previous instrumental experience required. The primary units of study include choral music from the following genres: sacred, multicultural, gospel, secular, pop, Broadway, folk. A variety of languages will also be used in the performance music. The students will demonstrate learning through public performances, individual voice tests and written evaluations. Course Recommendation: Bel Canto is recommended for any student interested in participating in an advanced women s choir. Additional Registration Information: Students may enroll and receive credit for this course more than once. Student audition is required. All Choir students are expected to participate in the concerts. Students are expected to adhere to the concert schedule, and fulfill choral activities as set forth in the total high school program. Students should be sure to register for semester 1 and semester 2 of this course. Course Description: This course provides musically talented students with the opportunity to participate in a select ensemble. The primary units of study include specializing in the areas of quality performance of pop, jazz and madrigal literature. Members will also receive experience in the area of vocal improvisation, and ear training. The students will demonstrate learning through public performances, written evaluations, and individual voice tests. Course Recommendation: Encore/Now and Then Singers is a select choir and is recommended for students who have previous choral experience. Advanced Placement Music Theory Grades: 11-12 FINE ART ELECTIVES The Advanced Placement program (AP) provides high school students with the opportunity to take college-level coursework and exams while still in high school, with each course culminating in a rigorous, optional exam to earn potential college credit. AP provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to develop the study skills, habits of mind, and critical thinking skills that they will need in college. Course Description: This course is the study of the basic materials of music that are heard or presented in a musical score. The primary units of study include notation, intervals, scales and keys, chords, metric organization, rhythmic patterns, sight singing, and analysis and construction of four-part compositions. The students will demonstrate learning through written tests, part-writing assignments, and listening assignments.
