GENERAL EDUCATION PROGRAM SCHOOL OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING 1. The General Education Program for Engineering Students Humanities and social science courses encompass the breadth of human experience and cultureboth past and present- including individual behavior, social and political structures, aesthetic values, modes and dynamics of communication, including philosophical and ethical thought, and cognitive processes. Such courses are an integral part of all engineering curricula which complements technical and professional content by enabling engineering students to appreciate the world in which they live and work, and to contribute as both educated members of society and aware, ethical professionals. Humanities and social science courses also provide a framework for rational inquiry, critical evaluation, judgment, and decisions when dealing with issues that are nonquantifiable, ambiguous, or controversial. Of equal importance, they offer opportunities for engineering students to develop interests and insights that guide, enrich, and expand their perceptions of the world they live in. To these ends, all Bachelor of Science (BS) students in the Schools of Engineering are required to complete a general education program of 18 credit hours of electives in approved humanities and social sciences. Students are strongly encouraged to develop a coherent general education plan (options for which will be discussed further later in the document) and distribute their general education credits throughout their academic program. 2. Courses Eligible under the General Education Program Condition 1 of the General Education Program (EFD 55-98) states: Courses [used to satisfy the General Education Program] must be drawn from those offered by the departments of Agricultural Economics, Child Development and Family Studies, Communication, Economics, English, Foreign Languages and s, History, Interdisciplinary Studies, Philosophy, Political Sciences, Psychological Sciences, Sociology and Anthropology, Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences; and by the Patti and Rusty Rueff School of Visual and Performing Arts. Any course offered by these departments is allowable, provided that it is open to students in the offering department and is not focused primarily on professional training, natural science, or mathematics. IE SCHOOL POLICY FOR GENERAL EDUCATION ELECTIVES 1. A minimum of 18 credit hours must be taken. 2. At least 9 credit hours of courses with global/societal content from GROUP I must be taken. 3. At least 6 credit hours must be completed in at least one department. 1

4. No more than 12 credit hours can be completed in one department. 5. No more than 12 credit hours of introductory-level courses are allowed. Furthermore, at least 6 credit hours must come from courses at the 30000-level or above (provided they haven t been identified as introductory), or from courses with a required prerequisite in the same program. 6. If a foreign language is taken, at least 6 credit hours are required in the same language. If a student obtains credit by exam for a 101-level course, the next highest course taken in that language must be taken for a grade to receive credit for the 101-level course towards BSIE requirements. This excludes literature/culture based courses (e.g., CHNS 241) 7. Credit is not allowed for language courses in the student s native tongue(s), but literature, culture, drama, and related courses are allowed. 8. Credit by examination or granted credit, conditioned solely at the discretion of the awarding department, can be used to satisfy any part of the requirements. 9. No course may be used more than once even if the offering department allows it to be repeated for credit. 10. All introductory-level courses must be taken for a letter grade (i.e., A, B, C, D, or F). 11. At most one course may be taken as Pass/Not-Pass. 12. Courses treating subjects such as accounting, management, personal finance, personnel administration, technical writing, pilot training, skill courses, Band and ROTC can be of value to industrial engineers but do not fulfill the purpose of the General Education Program in the humanities, fine arts, and social sciences taught primarily in the School of Liberal Arts. Some of these courses can be taken as technical electives or extra courses beyond the requirements for the BSIE degree. For example, FS 470 - Wine Appreciation cannot be used as a General Education elective under any circumstances (nor will it count as a technical elective). IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT TO MAKE SURE THAT THE PROVISIONS FOR THE GENERAL EDUCATION PROGRAM ARE SATISFIED AS A CONDITION OF GRADUATION. 4. Special Approvals for Non-Pre-Approved General Education Elective Courses If a student believes a course satisfies the intent and requirements of a general education elective, but the course does not appear on the list of pre-approved GE courses, then the student must petition for a course to be counted as a general education elective. Each course will be evaluated by the IE Undergraduate Office based on the description of a general education elective course given in Section 2. To petition for a course approval, the following process must be observed. 1. A student must pick up IE-Form 3 from the IE Undergraduate Office. 2

2. The student must fill in the course information required on the form and attach a syllabus for the course in question. 3. Student returns the completed form to the IE Undergraduate Office for final processing and decision. Each student is notified via email if the course is approved or not. All documentation is stored in the student's permanent record. 3
