Reading and Writing A READING 1 Read the text and tick ( ) A, B, or C. The best place in the world to live Vancouver is the third biggest city in Canada. It s in the south west of the country and it has a population of 2.6 million. A recent study showed that it s the best city in the world to live. The study looked at areas like weather, transport, education, healthcare, and safety. This study happens every year and Vancouver is usually number one. We asked Vancouver resident Jacob Meyers if he agrees. I ve lived in Vancouver all my life. I work for an engineering company and I ve travelled on business to many Canadian cities. Two years ago another company offered me a very good job in Montreal but I didn t take it because I never want to leave my city. Let me tell you why not: Vancouver is situated between the mountains and the Pacific Ocean. That means the summers aren t too hot and the winters aren t too cold. It also rains a lot, in summer and winter. Some people don t like that but I do because our gardens and parks are always green and fresh. Every day I cycle or walk for an hour in a park and in Vancouver you re never more than a few minutes from one. I don t feel frightened when I walk in Vancouver s streets at night. Of course, Vancouver has a high population and there s crime in every big city, but compared to the USA, for example, it s quite safe. But my favourite thing about Vancouver is its incredible mix of nationalities. I ve got friends here from all over the world. And there s an enormous variety of foreign food in the restaurants and markets. I ve eaten wonderful dishes from China, India, Italy, Greece, and Japan and I haven t been to any of these places. Example: Vancouver is bigger than all the other Canadian cities. A True B False C Doesn t say 1 Two thousand, six hundred people live in the south west of Canada. 2 A study says that Vancouver is the best place for a city holiday. 3 Jacob was born in Vancouver. 4 There are some mountains between Vancouver and the ocean. It often rains in summer in Vancouver. 6 Jacob has a big garden. 7 He lives an hour away from the nearest park. 8 He never walks in the streets at night. 9 Jacob can speak a lot of foreign languages. He has been to Italy on holiday. 2 Now read the text again and answer the questions. 1 How often does the study happen? 2 Where has Jacob travelled to for his work? 3 What are the winters like in Vancouver? 4 Are there many parks in Vancouver? What does Jacob like best about Vancouver? WRITING Reading total 1 Answer the questions. A lot of people are standing. Well, the trains are always busy at this time. People are going home from work. I m not. I m travelling to work. But it s a quarter past five Yes I m a nurse. I sometimes work in the day, but this week I m working in the evenings. Do you enjoy your work? Yes, I do, but I m going to change jobs in a few months because I want to travel. I m studying to become an English teacher and then I hope to go to Japan for a year and teach English. Really? I ve been to Japan lots of times. I m a flight attendant. I work for an American airline. When I do long flights, I stay in the country for a couple of days before I fly home again. How wonderful! Do they serve food on this train? Just snacks, I think. I m going to get a coffee. Would you like one? No, thanks, but I d like a packet of crisps. I m really hungry. I got on this train four hours ago and I haven t eaten anything. Sure. Thanks very much. That s very kind. That s fine. I ll be back in a few minutes. END-OF-COURSE TEST Listening 2 1 Well, a lot of people like the summer months when it s light in the evenings. I do too, but I prefer autumn when it s still quite warm and the leaves are a beautiful red and yellow colour. It gets dark earlier, but I love sitting in front of the fire in the living room and reading a book. 2 I play football at the park every Sunday afternoon with friends, which is fun. I cycle to and from work every day. I live about five kilometres from work, so that s a lot of cycling. And there s a gym at work, which is great and I use that once or twice a week. So, I do quite a lot, really. 3 Not a lot. I got up quite late. I m reading a great book at the moment, so I read that in bed for a couple of hours before I got up. In the afternoon, I took the bus into town and met some friends for a coffee. The next day I did housework in the morning and played tennis in the afternoon. 4 It depends. In the spring, summer and autumn, I cycle. It s great, because it s cheap, it s fast, and it s really good exercise. But I don t like using my bike in winter when it s very cold and windy, so I usually get the bus then. It s called One Day In Winter. It s about a murder in a haunted house. A friend gave it to me for my birthday a few years ago. I ve read two or three novels by the same writer, but this one s definitely the most exciting.
