Auvineni helikeelele on väga omased jõulised, energeetilised pinged. Antti Auvinen (1974) Finnish composer Antti Auvinen (1974) is an explorer of timbre and rhythm. He has thus far composed works for a range of ensembles, solo instruments and orchestra. When composing for acoustic instruments he has always been interested in different kinds of instrumental timbres, as well as non-traditional combinations of instruments and playing techniques. Auvinen has recently broadened his compositional palette towards electro-acoustic music. Auvinen creates and dissolves musical tensions by means of rhythmical devices. Using polyrhythmic and polypulsational effects he creates an impression of musical direction in his works. With rhythm and timbre he creates identities for musical units, which are still recognizable although every detail of them may change. Simultaneous rhythmic situations are presented as different layers in his scores and powerful, energetic tensions are typical of his compositional language. Although Auvinen s attitude towards composition is modernistic, he does not neglect emotional tensions, which play a very important part in his works. Jouko Laaksamo, 2010 Kaarea (2006/2009) I m particularly interested in rhythmical processes. It is my intention to create such rhythmical processes that could create a feeling of a direction in music. And even more, my intention is to create musical situations in which a feeling of multiple directions could occur simultaneously. Then, the musical time itself could be perceived as a layered phenomenon in a composition. The title, Kaarea, refers to a curve-like shape or form in music. A controlled freedom meaning improvisational elements that are partly locked in terms of pitch and happening in a certain time span is another important ingredient in this piece. Kaarea was commissioned by the Time of Music festival in Viitasaari, Finland. It was premiered during the same festival in July 2006 by ensemble U:. Jarkko Hartikainen (1981) Jarkko Hartikainen is intrested in sound, illusions and new discoveries of our reality. He believes in mankind s constant curiosity towards the new and in that inventions in one area inspire new innovations in others. That includes the non-verbal, even subconscious but nevertheless inherently important human communication through music. Jarkko Hartikaine studied composition in the Sibelius Academy (Finland) with Paavo Heininen and at Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts with Gerhard Müller-Hornbach, Beat Furrer, Pierluigi Billone as well as in numerous masterclasses (e.g. Helmut Lachenmann, Brian Ferneyhough, Tristan Murail, Enno Poppe). His music has been performed by Finnish RSO, Orchestre National de Lille, Jyväskylä Sinfonia, Ensemble U:, Ensemble Adapter, Musiques Nouvelles, Otto Tolonen, Finnish National Opera, Ensemble Cairn and others in more than 14 countries (e.g. Japan, New Zealand, United States, Iceland, Germany). vastakaiku / Anklang bis (2009) I composed the chamber music work Anklang originally when the multi-artistic Stallarte Festival Göttingen invited me to be their composer-in-focus. In German, Anklang finden means finding reverberation, or mutual understanding, on a matter, and thus the work invites the listener to delve into its different unisono situations. Even as the work is perceived as something rather sensuallyoriented, it doesn t even try to shake all the echoes (Anklänge) of those influences of the Central-European music-making that I have wanted to elaborate in my work, and the vicinity of which I ve recently wanted to be in. For the Estonian Ensemble U: I made a new version to fit their instrumentarium; celebrating the work s premiere in Helsinki I also translated the title into Finnish (vastakaiku).

Tatjana Kozlova (1977) pärit: piiriäärsest provintsilinnast mõjutas: H. Tulve, F. Doors 2 flöödile ja ansamblile valmis 2006. aasta suvel Ensemble Phoenix Baseli tellimusel. Teose uus versioon, Doors 2a, on loodud ansambli U: jaoks. Doors 1 kommentaariks olen kirjutanud järgmist: Lugu loob minu kujutluses pildi paanilisest liikumisest mööda pikka, kitsast, akendeta koridori. Mõnikord leiab sealt mõne ukse, mis viib kord samasugusesse akendeta ruumi, kord juhatab avarasse valgusküllasesse saali, kus on küll suured aknad, kuid pole asju ega inimesi... Tatjana Kozlova Tatjana Kozlova (1977) origin: a remote provincial town near the border is influenced by: H. Tulve, F. Nieder and voices inside her head considers important: timbre, intuition, empathy is moving to: the inner balance listens to: Grisey, Sciarrino, Goebbels is interested in: mechanisms of human consciousness is amazed by: the possibility of co-existence of the reality and the world of ideas Doors 2a (2007) Doors 1 was composed in 2005 and set for flute and electronics. Doors 2 for flute and ensemble was written in summer 2006, on the commission of Ensemble Phoenix Basel. A new version of the work Doors 2a is created for Ensemble U:. For the program note of Doors 1 I wrote: For me the piece emerges as a vision of panic movement in a long, narrow, windowless hallway. Sometimes you find a door that leads you to a similar windowless room, or on the contrary, a spacious, luminous hall, where you can find large windows but no people nor objects... One can say that in the new version those rooms have become furnished and animated. TripleDuos (2008) Sekstett TripleDuos kuulub minu teoste seeriasse, milles teose kogu-pikkus ja vormiosade proportsioonid on eelistatuna teistest kompositsioonilisitest otsustest määratud vastavalt erinevate pulsside polürütmilistele suhetele (siin 71:73:81 kuueteistkümnendiknooti tempos 69). Teoses TripleDuos määratleb see polürütm võimalikud hetked duode esiplaanile ilmumiseks sarnaselt Schönbergi Hauptstimme ga [sks k juhtiv hääl toim]. Kimmo Kuitunen (1968) Kimmo Kuitunen s main teacher in composition at the Sibelius Academy was Paavo Heininen; before studying composition Kuitunen had been working as an all-round musician. His collaboration with Mikael Laurson and Mika Kuuskankare in computer-assisted composition continues and is aiming far into the future. Trusting relations with musicians are for Kuitunen a matter of life and death. Most of his works are for virtuosos: Olli-Pekka Tuomisalo (sax) and Joonas Pohjonen (piano) have, for example, commissioned works from him, and he has partnerships with the Dutch pianist Ralph van Raat and the Estonian Ensemble U:. TripleDuos (2008) Sextet TripleDuos belongs to the series of my works, where the whole length of the composition is outlined and proportioned in relation to time intervals between slow pulses (here 71:73:81 semiquavers in tempo 69) before any other compositional definitions. In TripleDuos, this slow polyrhythm determines possible moments for duos to appear in the foreground not unlike from Hauptstimme in Schönbergian sense. 15 differently characterized duos interact in 15 triple duo constellations, in which the role and timing of duos on the whole curve of musical drama was dreamed up before any concrete black marks on the shining white, empty score. TripleDuos was comissioned by Ensemble U: and it was supported by The Foundation for Promotion of Finnish Music (LUSES) and National Council for Music.

Benjamin Broening (1967) Pariisis sündinud ja ajakirjanduses suureks talendiks (New Haven Register) nimetatud Benjamin Broeningi muusikas kõrvutub huvi ekspressiivse kõlajõu vastu lineaarsustajuga, mis tuleneb tema varasemast tegevusest lauljana. Eestis viibis Broening prestiižse Fulbrighti stipendiumi stipendiaadina, ühtlasi on ta saavutanud tunnustust ja auhindu mitmetelt organisatsioonidelt, nagu Jerome Composers Commissioning Program, American Composers Forum, Virginia Commission for the Arts, ACS/Andrew Mellon Foundation ja Presser Music Foundation. Tema muusikat on salvestanud Innova, Centaur, Everglade, Equilibrium, MIT Press ja Seamus. Broening on saanud teaduskraadid Michigani, Cambridge i, Yale i ja Wesleyani ülikoolist. changig light (2008) Teos on loodud juunis 2008 Tartus ansambli U: jaoks. See on üks mitmest teosest, mis peegeldab minu muljeid Eestist. Iga kord siia tulles olen ma kiindunud siinsesse valgusse, õhu, mere, metsa ja põldude hõngu. Minu viimased teosed peegeldavad ebatäiuslikult neid elamusi: Dark Wood tšellole äratab tundeid Eesti metsades olemisest, Trembling Air flöödile annab edasi õhus olevat energiat, täis linnulaulu, puude ja vee hääli, ning teoses changig light on talletatud minu kogemused Eestimaa maagilisest ja muutlikust valgusest. Benjamin Broening (1967) Benjamin Broening was born in Paris. Hailed in the press as a major talent (New Haven Register), Broening s music couples his interest in the expressive power of sound with a sense of line derived from his background as a singer. A recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship to Estonia, Broening has also received recognition and awards from the Jerome Composers Commissioning Program, American Composers Forum, Virginia Commission for the Arts, ACS/Andrew Mellon Foundation and the Presser Music Foundation. His music has been recorded on the Innova, Centaur, Everglade, Equilibrium, MIT Press and SEAMUS record labels. He holds degrees from the University of Michigan, Cambridge University, Yale University and Wesleyan University. changing light (2008) changing light for a sextet was composed in June 2008 in Tartu, Estonia for Ensemble U:. The piece is one of several that reflects my experience of being in Estonia. Every time I come here, I am struck by the light, by the feeling of the air, the sea, the forest and the farmland. My recent pieces imperfectly reflect those experiences: Dark Wood, for cello, evokes the feeling of being in the Estonian forests, Trembling Air, for flute, evokes the quality of energy of the air there filled as it is with the sound of birds, of trees, of water, and changing light tries to capture my experience of the magical and changeable quality of Estonian light.

Ansambli suhtumine, kõrge tase ja entusiasm avaldasid mulle kohe muljet. Niisugust ansamblit on väga vaja. Ansambli U: parim omadus on ehk nende lõputu ausus muusika vastu. Me töötasime minu muusikat salvestades nende suurepärase stuudiomeeskonnaga lugematu arv tunde just nii, nagu oli vaja, ja ma ei pidanud kunagi seda paluma. Need ambitsioonikad eestlased lihtsalt ei salli keskpärasust. Mulle meeldib U:-le kirjutada, kuna tean, et nad võtavad mind tõsiselt ja annavad endast parima, et aidata minu ideid ellu viia. Neile loodud teostes olen saanud julgelt katsetada, olla heliloojana mina ise. Ensemble s attitude, quality and enthusiasm impressed me immediately. Such an ensemble is very much needed. What is perhaps the greatest thing about Ensemble U: is their relentless honesty towards music. We worked countless hours with their amazing studio team to get my music on record just the way it had to be, and I never had to ask for it. These ambitious Estonians simply wouldn t tolerate so-so. I like writing for U: because I know that they take me seriously and do their best to help realise my ideas. I had a chance to be my real self as a composer and experiment freely when writing the works for them. Tatjana Kozlova Ensemble U: is not only a group of six excellent soloists and one remarkable sextet, but a sensitively interacting web of 15 duos, 20 trios, 15 quartets and 6 quintets but no conductor (or maybe 6 of them). It was clear for me from the very beginning of our cooperation (in Time of Music festival, Viitasaari 2006) that we had the same love in common: music, music and music. I very much enjoyed my experience working with Ensemble U:. They are all strong players, but perhaps even more important, they are intensely committed to the music they play. This excitement, vitality and commitment comes across to the audiences in their performances, which are powerful, engaging and expressive.

Ansambel U: asutatud: 2002. aastal Taavi Kerikmäe ja Tarmo Johannese eestvedamisel; koosseis: Tarmo Johannes (flööt), Helena Tuuling (klarnet), Vambola Krigul (löökpillid), Taavi Kerikmäe (klaver), Merje Roomere (viiul) ja Levi-Danel Mägila (tšello); repertuaar: nüüdismuusika klassika, eksperimentaalsed ja improvisatsioonilised kompositsioonid.
