Curriculum Standard One: The student will use his/her senses to perceive works of art, objects in nature, events, and the environment. 1. Curriculum Standard Two: The student will identify visual structures and functions of art, using the language of the visual arts. 1. The student will comprehend the aesthetics of perception through the use of visual arts photography vocabulary. 2. The student will discriminate among a variety of visual structures and functions to perceive commonalties and differences. 3. The student will create works that demonstrate his/her observations and perceptions of the visual characteristics of the world. A. Can the student demonstrate knowledge and understanding of visual arts photography vocabulary? A. Can the student, after viewing a variety of artworks, find and discuss common attributes among the artwork? A. Can the student create works of art from his/her observation which demonstrate a mastery of the language of the visual arts? After viewing a wide variety of works of art and photographs, the student will identify similarities and differences in class discussion and written essays. Curriculum Standard Three: The student will develop knowledge of and artistic skills in a variety of visual arts media and technical processes. 1. The student will use the elements of art and principles of design in his/her artwork in technically proficient and intuitive ways across a variety of media. 2. The student will solve challenging visual arts problems in two-dimensional media, using such intellectual skills as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. 3. The student will develop technical photographic skills. understanding of the art elements and principles of design using a variety of media in technically proficient works of art which the student creates? Can the student create a two- dimensional photograph based on study and analysis of the elements of art and principles of design, which the student incorporates into his/her own personal expression? Can the student use equipment to produce images? 3 After viewing photographs of different styles, historic periods, and well-known photographers, the student will explore and demonstrate basic skills combining composition and technique. The student will create a portrait, based upon earlier review of portraiture through photo history, using a variety of lighting techniques to effectively convey personality, presenting the final artwork in a group critique format. The student will demonstrate beginning levels of proficiency in: dealing with chemicals in the photographic process the use and understanding of a 35mm camera using an enlarger to make contact prints and enlargements printing techniques (dodging and burning and use of filters) evaluating test strips, negatives, and prints subject treatment and presentation
Curriculum Standard Four: The student will create original artworks based on personal experiences or responses. 1. The student will create a series of photographs in a variety of photographic media communicating specific ideas and personal experience. A. Can the student demonstrate the ability to effectively use art elements and principles of design in his/her photographs and in solving a problem? The student will demonstrate an appropriate level of control and craftsmanship in the photographic process. The student will select photographs to include in a portfolio and will discuss his/her strengths using appropriate technical, visual, and aesthetic vocabulary. 4
Curriculum Standard Five: The student will develop skills in photography and appreciation for using the visual arts in lifelong learning. 1. The student will analyze and discuss the ways in which his/her own work, and that of others, use media effectively to translate ideas, feelings, and values into visual statements of aesthetic merit. 2. The student will appreciate the visual world. A. Can the student analyze and discuss his/her artwork and the works of others? A. Can the student respond to and analyze the images from a personal point of view? The student will critique his/her work and the work of others both in oral and in written form. After viewing images as presented by the teacher, the student will respond both in oral and written form articulating an appreciation of the image. 5
Curriculum Standard Six: The student will explore the role of the visual arts in culture and human history. 1. The student will gain an understanding of photography from a variety of cultures by describing the roles that specific artworks play in those societies. understanding that the visual arts and artists reflect, play a role in, and influence culture? Through class discussion and/or reflective journal writing, the student will discuss the purpose(s) of art from major time periods and cultures from the earliest cave paintings to the present time. 6
Curriculum Standard Seven: The student will investigate major themes in historical and contemporary periods and styles of the visual arts throughout the world. 1. The student will identify, describe, interpret, and analyze major themes in photography. understanding of the major themes of photography: portraiture, landscape, still life, photo journalism, and commercial photography? The student will write a composition or journal entry demonstrating an understanding of a selected major theme of photography. The student will analyze specific characteristics of artwork in various cultures and present it in a final piece. The student will produce a photographic work that reflects one of the major photographic themes, analyze it, and present it in oral and written form. The student will produce a self-portrait reflective of personal, cultural, or historical connections. 7

The student will analyze a variety of reasons for creating photographs and explore the various purposes for their creation. understanding of art criticism and analyze and assess the qualities and merits of works of art using those steps? Through discussion, reading, and/or reflective journal writing, the student will discuss the steps of art criticism (description, analysis, interpretation, and judgment) in viewing and critiquing artwork. 8
