If two or three or more arriving early or staying late could give him a hand it would be much appreciated. Please give us some help with this important function. In looking at the volunteers that make our Traditional Jazz and Dixieland Jazz music come alive, we see a number of groups or teams working together. We have both the paid band and the Jammer Band. Before the music starts, though, we need the leader or conductor who guides us Jammer Band volunteers, so we all play in the same key, take turns and share the solo work. Even before that happens, we need the musicians to sign up online or email Dick or call Bill Todd, and then arrive at the Elks Lodge ready to play. Dick Williams, as leader (Don and I are substitutes), sends out reminders to the volunteer musicians. As Don and I play with Dick we see how effortlessly he leads the band. As leader, one always try to think ahead and make sure to include everyone which Dick does every time. He enjoys encouraging the musicians to share their talents for the dancers and listeners as well as for fellow musicians. In rehearsal the leader may have the group play a whole song, just the bridge or verse, or maybe just a difficult passage. Sometimes songs are arranged thenan example of that is when Miss Patty sings. She often sings the second chorus and the out or last chorus. On stage all musicians need to keep their eyes on the leader for tempo, and for reminders or changes. The musicians who are reading music on stage often glance up every now and then to watch the leader as well. Dick is always scanning the group of musicians and is ready to designate the next soloist or give a signal that we are ending the song. Yes, when you see a musician use hand signals they are saying something to the other musicians. We all learn to read music hand signals. After all of this, we are now ready to go on stage and play for our wonderful audience of dancers and listeners. Thank you to everyone who is keeping Traditional Jazz and Dixieland Jazz music alive! May's Featured Band is an Old Favorite The Fulton Street Jazz Band is one of the West Coast s premier, Classic Jazz and Swing bands. Over the past 50-years, they have headlined at hundreds of prestigious Jazz festivals, been featured on over 25 Jazz cruises throughout the world, made many TV and radio appearances and most recently completed a very successful concert tour of Hungary. The FSJB is a Chicago-style band that plays in the tradition of Eddie Condon's New York bands of the 40's and 50's. But...they don't stop there. The band's extensive and varied repertoire combines elements of the music of New Orleans, JAZZ BAND with their own brand of exciting Jazz. With its powerful and unique sound, the band is a must for listeners and dancers alike. The FSJB s latest recording also features two songs by Ringwald s actress daughter, Molly Ringwald.
