CHASIN JAZZ by Cecelia Maloney THE SOUNDS O Mardi Gras The resno Dixieland Society has done it again! This club, no bigger than our Society, in a San Joaquin Valley city puts on a really classy festival with a Mardi Gras theme, and everybody there has fun. Part of that must be because the locals seem to have such a good time. Set in a comfortable hotel that adjoins a convention center, everything is under one roof. Only four venues, but the performances of eleven top notch bands are well managed. The sets took only an hour with fifteen minutes between them, but music started on time and the joint was jumping all the time... or until 10:45 pm anyway. It wasn t just the familiar California big draw bands, but also some of the best trad bands from around the country. Old friends to us were Devil Mountain JB, Bob Schulz risco JB, and High Sierra JB. resno s Blue Street JB was there, as was Yosemite JB from the nearby foothills. Though some purists grumble about the presence of Tom Rigney and lambeau, being exposed to other rhythms by fine musicians can and does produce a good performance and lots of fun. rom the Northwest were Uptown Lowdown JB, Grand Dominion, and Climax from Canada. Ray Skjelbred is actually from Seattle now, but he ll always be thought of as Chicago style and the Cubs in his band s name reflects that, too. The surprise was New Black Eagles from New England who weren t any better than the rest. Special guest artist was George Probert, the veteran reed man, who was ill and couldn t fill that position last year. He must be in good health now as he was in fine fettle this year appearing as a guest with other bands and fronting an All-Star band for a preview party Thursday night. Dick Williams, who keeps our jam sets going, led three jam sessions in the hotel s atrium. Two youth bands made one appearance each on Sunday. Take 2 from Elk Grove is a group to watch. A nice coincidence was that Clint Baker, the San Bruno master of many instruments, was present as a player with two bands and as featured musician on the front page of The American Rag s current issue. He played bass as one of Skjelbred s Cubs and trumpet with Grand Dominion, also joining Gerry Green on a two clarinet chorus of Careless Love. Something must be said about the song selection throughout the festival. Many very familiar songs weren t heard at all. Instead, lesser heard ones were and that was a treat, too. Many had vocals that were very well done, especially when sung by trombonist Jim Armstrong of Grand Dominion as he has an appealing voice and sings complicated lyrics clearly. He certainly could IN RESNO be considered an appropriate antidote to the frenzied performance of Beyoncé at the Super Bowl. Devil Mountain had a special set called Bix and Bing. Yes, songs written by Bix Beiderbecke and ballads performed by Bing Crosby in his movies. Trumpet player Tom Belmessieri did the narration and the ballad singing. Maybe we ll hear some of these during our session this month. There couldn t be a Mardi Gras themed event without royalty, costumes, and umbrella parades. A King and Queen are named annually. This year it was Don and Cathie Jones of The American Rag. Unfortunately, illness kept them from attending. However, there was a couple named to the Court to fill in for them. Our Society s Dick and Kathy Williams filled those shoes admirably. The parasol parade was a big one on Saturday afternoon. There must have been sixty, mostly women, but a lot of men and a few children strutting with their umbrellas through three of the venues. Saturday evening the costume parade brought out the umbrellas again and some grand costumes (like the lead quartet from The Wizard of Oz) that wound through a couple of the venues. Lots of beads were thrown and goodwill prevailed. resno Dixieland Society has a lot to be proud with this event. Their turnout of volunteers must be huge to get the generous sponsor support, helpful local staff and the organizational talent to keep everything running so smoothly. There were dance floors at all venues that were usually full. It was even pointed out that some of the busiest dancers on the floor were also the hardest working volunteers. This was a truly impressive weekend. 5
