GS 09-1313 Rev. 1.0 11-April-2009 Purpose: This procedure demonstrates how to use the Anritsu MT8803G to place a GSP-1720 modem into a call state. After the lab technician becomes familiar with this process, it will be straightforward for the technician to adapt the procedure to the actual product that a Vendor would like the technician to evaluate. Instructions: The Anritsu MT8803G is primarily used for Lab Bench Testing of Globalstar Satellite Phone Products. The primary function of the MT8803G is to allow the Globalstar product to be placed into a call state at any allowable downlink RF frequency (which simulates the Satellite) and to support the various types of calls which the Globalstar unit is capable of. The basic Anritsu set up is very similar for all Globalstar products; however specific parameters must be set depending on the intended application of the unit under test. The following information is needed in order to determine the proper setup requirements. 1. What type of connection will there be between the GSP-1720 and the Anritsu, Conducted (via RF cables) or Radiated (via antennae)? 2. If a Radiated connection is to be used, what type of GSP-1720 antenna, Active or Passive, will be used for both the Transmit and Receive functions of the GSP-1720? GS-09-1313 v1.0 Globalstar Proprietary Page 1

Some support equipment is required for the Test Setup. This includes, but is not necessarily limited to, the following items: Bench Power Supplies Antenna Test Cables Cable Adaptors GSP-1720 with a data/power cable and an appropriate power supply Optionally, a GSP-1720 antenna is required if radiated tests are to be performed Optionally, antenna(s) for the Anritsu is/are required if radiated tests are to be performed Standalone GSP-1720 Satellite Data Modem. This section describes the Test Setup for a standalone GSP 1720 Data Modem. Many Vendors will utilize the GSP 1720 and combine it into an integrated product which has custom controller hardware, a power supply, and control software/firmware. This guide will not attempt to determine how to interface to specific Vendor products or applications but, given the basic GSP 1720 Test Setup described below, it is assumed that a Test Engineer will be able to adapt the procedure to specific Vendor application requirements. Modem Setup 1. Obtain the Modem Board to be tested. Ensure that this modem has been provisioned with a valid 10 digit MDN 2. For a Radiated Connection: If the test is to use a radiated connection to the Anritsu, determine if the GSP-1720 antenna is Active or Passive. 3. For a Conducted Connection: If the test is to use a conducted connection between the GSP-1720 and the Anritsu, RF cables must be used to provide a direct connection between the Anritsu and the GSP-1720. 4. Data/Power Cable for the GSP-1720 Use the data/power cable and power supply provided by the Vendor. An alternative solution is to use a GSP 1720 Modem Integrators Test Cable Assembly P/N 90-001161-01 with an external power supply. If using a passive antenna, select the 4.9 VDC option on the Integrator Cable control unit, and set the Line/Off/On switch to Line. Plug the 22 pin Molex connector from the Vendor cable into the GSP-1720 modem. The Modem will be powered from this cable. If the GSP-1720 antenna is an active unit AND if a radiated connection is to be used between the GSP-1720 and the Anritsu, then the 7.0 VDC will be used later in this process, but do NOT select this position at this time. If conducted mode is being used then ALWAYS use the 4.9VDC option, regardless of which type of antenna (passive or active) will be used by the modem in the eventual integrated product. GS-09-1313 v1.0 Globalstar Proprietary Page 2

Anritsu Setup 1. Ensure that the Anritsu unit is in operational mode vs. Standby. If in Standby mode, the Stby LED on the lower left of the MT8803G front panel will be Green and the instrument display will be blank. Depress and hold the Stby switch until the ON LED illuminates and the display comes on and indicates that the instrument is booting up and initializing its various functions. This may take up to a minute. 2. Set up the MT8803G instrument for call processing. First select the F6 Instrument Setup button on the lower right row of horizontal switches. 3. Next select the RF Input and RF Output modes. At this point you should have determined if you are testing with a Radiated connection (using external antennae) or with a Conducted connection (with cables directly connected between the GSP-1720 and the MT8803G). 4. If using a Radiated connection (with Antenna): Using the Cursor Up/Dn and Set keys, set RF input to Main and RF output to Main. Now connect the RF cables from the Anritsu to the external antennas. Anritsu Antenna: At the Anritsu, connect an RF cable from the Lower Right Port marked Main Input/Output to the input connector on the Test Antenna Feed Horn which will be pointed to the External Modem Antenna. NOTE: Globalstar RF conventions use the color RED for TX functions and BLUE for Receive functions. Modem Antenna: Connect the external Modem antenna to the GSP-1720 Modem. Use an RF cable to go between the TX RF connector on the modem and the TX connector on the modem s antenna. Connect a second RF cable from the RX connector on the Modem to the RX connector on the Antenna. (Same connectivity for both Active and Passive Modem antennas) Orient the Anritsu and GSP-1720 Antennas: Orient the two antennas properly with respect to each other: Locate the Modem antenna such that it is pointed into the center of the Radiating Test Horn and approximately 5 to 6 inches from the horn. 5. If using a Conducted connection (with cables): Set RF Input to Main Set RF Output to Aux Use RF cables to connect the Main Input/Output connector on the Anritsu to the Modem TX connector Use RF cables to connect the Anritsu SG Output connector to the Modem RX connector. GS-09-1313 v1.0 Globalstar Proprietary Page 3

6. Verify Call Processing Mode is {TIAX6} if not, select this setting using the Cursor and Set keys 7. Select the desired Forward and Reverse Link Frequencies. Normally a center frequency is used for general testing. For example F6 and R6 or F7 and R7. These are set using the Cursor and Set keys 8. Set the call parameters using the cursor, keypad, function and set keys 9. Set the RF Output Level: The RF Output Level is the most important parameter in this field as it determines the RF power being sent into the modem. If the RF Output Level is too high, damage can be done to the Modem RF front end components and, if set too low, the Modem will not register. If a radiated connection is being used, then a stronger RF level will be required than if using a conducted connection (where RF signal are injected directly into the modem) Radiated Connection: For a Radiated Connection test setup, you will have cabled the test horn to illuminate the Modem Antenna. A nominal RF output level of between -65 to -85 dbm is recommended. Set the RF Output level for this test to -75dBm using the cursor, function key pad, and set keys. Conducted Connection: For a Conducted Connection test setup, set the RF Output level to -95 dbm. 10. Set the Signal Service Option: Scroll down to Signal Service option. There are 3 selections, S01 for voice, S02001 for Data, and S02003 for Markov Calls Select S02001 as this is a data modem and you will be setting up a data loopback call 11. Select the Data Pattern. Select all zeros @9600 baud. 12. This completes the Anritsu setup 13. Return to the instrument set up display by depressing Key F6. Call State Performance The Modem and Anritsu have now been setup for the actual test. The next step is to start the Anritsu radiating, allow the modem to register and then initiate a call and do the regulatory (or other) measurements. 1. Power up the GSP-1720: Use the Vendor s data/power cable and follow their instructions to power the GSP-1720 Modem ON. Alternatively, if you are using the GSP-1720 Integrators Cable Control Unit, Switch the Line/Off/On switch to ON. This will actually apply power to the Modem. This can be verified on the Modem board by observing Green LED activity One LED will be on steady and the other should be alternating on and off. If testing with a Radiated connection and using an Active GSP-1720 antenna, select the 7.0 VDC position at this time At this point, the modem is powered on and looking for a signal so that it can register GS-09-1313 v1.0 Globalstar Proprietary Page 4

2. Start the Anritsu Globalstar Service: At the Anritsu, Verify that the MT8803G is at the setup display screen by depressing F6 Now Press F5 (Start) Call Proc: upper right of display changes from STOP to IDLE 3. Observe Modem Registration: When the modem registers, the Modem IMSI and Hex ESN will appear at the lower part of the Anritsu display screen. This signifies that the modem is registered. 4. Initiate HyperTerminal: Initiate HyperTerminal Session on the PC, and connect the PC Serial Data Port to the Data Port of the GSP-1720 using the Vendor s cable. Alternatively, you can use the 1720 Integrators Cable and connect its Data Cable DB9 to the PC Serial Port. Set COM Port. Within HyperTerminal, select Properties from the File dropdown menu, and set the PC COM Port to the appropriate COM Port number as obtained from the Windows Hardware Device Manager. 5. Configure the HyperTerminal session for the port speed of the GSP-1720. Note that although the default port speed is 19200 baud, this can be changed by the Vendor. 6. These two steps are not necessary but are recommended because they verify that the modem is registered properly On the HyperTerminal keyboard enter at+gsn On the HyperTerminal keyboard enter at$qcstatus The Modem will return the Hex ESN and the Modem registration status in response to the at+gsn and at$qcstatus commands. The GSN (Globalstar Serial Number) should match the ESN that is displayed on the MT8803G screen, and the call status should match the status displayed on the MT8803G. 7. To enter a call state, enter the following command at the HyperTerminal keyboard atd#56672225. 8. The Anritsu Call Proc: State should transition from a) Idle register to b) Originate to c) TC Init to d) Conversation and the Call Processing State should then remain in Conversation mode. 9. The GSP-1720 is now in a call (operating mode) and measurements can be performed 10. End the call by entering the following command from the HyperTerminal screen. ath0 The EUT can now have power removed and can be disconnected from the instrumentation. GS-09-1313 v1.0 Globalstar Proprietary Page 5

Testing the Actual Integrated Product: When this procedure is adapted for testing the actual Vendor s product, the following questions will need to be answered: 1. How does the Product being tested (Equipment Under Test, EUT) get powered up? 2. Has the Vendor provided all the correct cables, software and instructions for enabling the product to be put into a Globalstar Call State? 3. How is the EUT kept in an operational state such that other measurements can be performed? GS-09-1313 v1.0 Globalstar Proprietary Page 6
