The irst movement Ichabod s Walk is to be layed as a strict tango. In the story Ichabod ancies himsel a ladies man. He likes to walk to their houses and enjoys being scared at the same time thus the tango o Ichabod s walk. The tango is a traditional Argentine dance between a man and a woman that has a sense o tension and romance. The movement starts with the low instruments in a minor key to signiy Ichabod s gangly eatures. Basses and celli need to ay close attention to their articulations in order to get the roer eel. Try to hold the temo back rather than allow it to all orward. The slides should be layed rather gregariously with secial attention to ending the note sharly. Hessian s Ride should be layed as ast as the orchestra can handle without sounding out o control. The students should lay on the string to make the movement rhythmically roulsive. Make sure the double down-bows are layed with a heavy accent they reresent sword slashes. Learning Bank: The Legend o Sleey Hollow Washington Irving (783-859) was one o America s irst native-born authors. Well-resected by critics o his day and still widely read today Irving was a major literary igure o the early 9 th century with dozens o ictions essays biograhies and histories to his credit. He also oered suort and encouragement to young American writers such as Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe. Irving s literary outut is rich in its scoe and stylistic diversity. His earliest book the extravagantly titled A History o New-York rom the Beginning o the World to the End o the Dutch Dynasty by Diedrich Knickerbocker (809) is a satire on academic historical writing. The book was so oular that his stuy seudonym ( Knickerbocker ) became a nickname or all New Yorkers; it is also the linguistic origin o the NBA basketball team the New York Knicks. Desite the satirical nature o his irst work Irving was himsel an accomlished historian: biograhies o historical igures as well as studies o historical events make u the majority o his ublished writings. An aointment as the US Minister to Sain brought the author into close contact with Sanish culture and history an exerience that resulted in a biograhy o Christoher Columbus and a history o the city o Granada. He also chronicled the exloration o the American West. Although he was a roliic historical writer Irving is not remembered today or his histories. His most amous and enduring work is the essay and short story collection entitled The Sketchbook o Georey Crayon ublished serially in 89-0. This collection includes two o Irving s most well-loved stories Ri Van Winkle and The Legend o Sleey Hollow. In addition to his ublished writings Washington Irving s inluence on American culture can be seen in two coinages that still enjoy oular usage: Gotham (a nickname or New York City used in the Batman comic book series) and the almighty dollar (an exression that connotes an obsession with money and material ossessions). The Story: The Legend o Sleey Hollow is set at the end o the 8 th century in a small Dutch settlement in New York. The rotagonist Ichabod Crane is a nervous and lanky schoolteacher who is trying to woo a wealthy armer s daughter to marry him. Returning home one cold autumn night Ichabod becomes rightened by the rustling noises and strange shaes in the dark orest. Suddenly his deeest ears become reality when the inamous headless horseman aears his head straed to his saddle. The horseman is rumored to be the ghost o a Hessian trooer slain in the Revolutionary War; every night he returns to search or his missing head. ( Hessians were German mercenary soldiers hired by England to ight in the American Revolution.) The headless horseman chases the terriied man through the woods until he reaches a bridge that he cannot cross. As a arting gesture the ghostly horseman throws his head knocking the haless schoolteacher o his horse. (In the morning it is revealed that the head was actually a umkin.) Ichabod Crane disaears rom the town orever and nobody really knows whether he led in ear or ell rey to the headless horseman. 3 SO64
