Fall Has Arrived Well, the dog days of summer are behind us now and we turn to the beauty of autumn in New England. Here at the JBPL, we have a number of items to help you with all your fall needs. Books of recipes, preserving and canning of your garden bounty are available. Have a last minute home improvement project to do? Check out our how to books and DVD s for instructional assistance. If you are going on a fall vacation, be sure to check out our A-Z World Travel and Global Road Warrior databases to find the best restaurants and city information. Don t forget to download those e-books and audio tapes from Overdrive for all your reading pleasures. Mango Languages is now even better than ever. Check it out on our Online Resources page and see all the changes. We have added many more languages for you to learn. Sure, we have the basics (French, Spanish, Italian, etc) but have you ever wanted to learn Irish? Thai? What about speaking like a Pirate? Yup, we have that too. Check it out online and start learning today. Oh yeah, there is now also a Mango iphone App that is ready to go. Now study your language from anywhere by using your iphone. Wine Tasting Fundraiser Mark your calendars for Sunday, October 16 th, 2011 for an evening of fine wines, craft beer and hors d oeuvres to benefit the Jonathan Bourne Public Library. The event will take place at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy s new library The ABS

Information Commons from 5:00 til 8:00 p.m. The evening will feature three wine stations from different locations of the world as well as a special craft beer section. Light Hors d oeuvres will be served. Local musicians RedKat Duet will be performing background music for the event. The event will also feature New England authors Carlo D Este and Carol McCleary who will both be signing copies of their latest works. D Este is a Pritzker Military Library Literature Award Winner whose works include Warlord: A Life of Winston Churchill At War: 1874-1945 and Eisenhower: A Soldiers Life. McCleary is the author of the thrillers The Illusion of Murder and The Alchemy of Murder. Copies of their work will be available for purchase. Tickets for the wine tasting event are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. The wine tasting on October 16 will be a great evening but there are other ways to take part if you just cannot make it. Support the event with cash or an in-kind gift of $100 or more to be recognized in library acknowledgements and receive two complimentary tickets to the event. Buy raffle tickets for a chance to win wine, gift bags and handmade cork trivets, 3 for $5.00. Tickets available at the library. Donate a bottle of wine for our raffle. Call the library for details. Bruins Reading Rink Furniture The JBPL has some new furniture thanks to the Boston Bruins. Come take a look at it in our Children s Room. able to walk through the library and stop at various stations to read sections of a book together and have completed the story by the end of the walk. A craft and snacks will be available at the end of the stroll. This is a self paced family literacy event offering each group the chance to read together. Meet United States Senator Scott Brown Members of the U.S. Women s Hockey Team and Blades the Bear came along to help us set it up. Thanks to the Boston Bruins and Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners as well as Children s Librarian Terry Johnson for making this happen for the library. We re Going on a Book Walk!!! And your family should come too The Bourne Early childhood Council and the JBPL are having a strolling story hour on Saturday, October 15, 2011 from 2 3:30 p.m. here at the library. Families will be Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown will be at the library on Saturday, October 29 th from 11 til 12 to sign copies of his book Against All Odds. Copies of the book will be available for sale courtesy of Titcombs Books. The book signing follows the Friends of the Jonathan Bourne Public Library Inc. Annual Meeting which will be held at 10:30 a.m. Don t miss this opportunity. Did you know that the library offers discount museum passes? Fall Book Sale Is Coming Get ready to stock up on all your winter reading with the annual Friends of the JBPL Inc, fall book sale. The sale will take place at the library on the following days: Thurs Oct 27 9:00 a.m. til 8:00 p.m. Fri Oct 28 9:00 a.m. til 8:00 p.m. Sat Oct 29 9:00 a.m. til 3:00 p.m. As always, a special Friends only preview will be held on Wed, Oct 26 from 3:00 til 7:00 p.m. You must be a member of the Friends to attend. Not a member? That s okay. Join before the sale or sign up at the door on the 26 th. Volunteers are needed. If you can give any help, please call the library at 508-759-0644 and leave a message for book sale coordinator Jackie Brown. Friends Annual Meeting and Vicki And Lex Coates Award The Friends of the Jonathan Bourne Public Library Inc. will be holding their annual meeting on Saturday, October 29 at 10:30 a.m. here at the library. (As mentioned earlier, U.S. Senator Scott Brown will be signing books from 11 til 12 immediately following the meeting). Nominations are currently being taken for the Vicki and Lex Coates Award to the outstanding library volunteer of the past year. Nomination forms are available at the library. Both Vicki and Lex were strong library advocates and volunteered numerous hours and energy to the JBPL. They both believed that a healthy community had a strong public library and worked hard to make that happen. Past recipients of this award include Joy Dalton and Jackie Brown. Kids Halloween Party and Parade The annual Halloween Party will be held on Friday, October 28 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bourne United Methodist Church. The Toe Jam Puppet Band will be there doing a show as well as providing music for dancing. Children are encouraged to wear their costumes. Weather permitting, the annual Halloween stroll from the church to (and through) the library will take place. Call the Children s Department for more details. 4

Library Card Night Mark your calendars now for the annual JBPL Library Card Night. Anyone 5 and older is invited to join us to get their library card. Children under 18 must have a parent/guardian with a valid picture id. Stop by the library with your filled out form and ID before the evening so that their library card will be ready for them to pick up that evening. A special guest will be on hand to congratulate our newest members of the JBPL family. For more information, or to pick up an application, stop by the Children s department. sometime this fall.
