The Villages Computer Club This week's program will feature a presentation by Peter Cronas and Richard Woods on Comparing XP and Windows 7. What does the future hold for those who are trying to hang on to their XP system as long as possible? If I do make the move what do I get that is not available with XP? Now is the time to get these and lots of other questions you might have answered. Following the presentation will be refreshments, 50/50, door prizes and a problem solving session. If you have a computer problem you can't resolve, fill out the problem report form found at http://thevillagescomputerclub.com/meetings.php and bring it to the meeting. A picture of the screen is sent to the computer s invisible Clipboard. The picture may be pasted onto a document or an email form to save or to send to someone. 1. With the document you wish to copy on the screen in front of you, press the PRINT SCREEN key on your keyboard. Usually found next to the F12 key. 2. Open any wordprocessor e.g. Notepad, Wordpad, MSWord, MSWorks, etc. or an email form.

3. Place the mouse cursor onto the blank document or email form and press CTRL + V key to paste what was copied to the computer s clipboard by Print Screen. 4. You may save the picture to file or send it to someone in an email so they can see the same screen that you re looking at on your computer. NOTE: The PRINT SCREEN feature takes a picture of the screen, so expect to see the menu bars, etc which were also on the screen. To take a picture of only the ACTIVE page without including the edges of pages behind the active page, hold down the ALT key when you press the Print Scr key. Note 2: After pasting a print screen picture into an AOL email form, rightclick the picture and select RESIZE Full Page. This will increase the size of the picture so it will appear to the recipient just as it does on your screen. Failing to resize makes the text in the picture small and unreadable by the recipient. *************************************************************************** ************************* Task Manager End Program Q. Sometimes my computer freezes. I go to Task Manager to End Process but the program does not close and the computer remains frozen. Why does Task Manager's End Process not work? A. There are a number of reasons why your Task Manager may not respond to the End Process request. Before doing a cold shutdown, try this. 1. Rightclick the program you're trying to close with End Process. 2. Select Go To Process from the dropdown list. The program will be highlighted in the Processes list. 3. Click End Process. This should close all files of this program and unfreeze your computer. ************************************************ *************************************** HDMI Cable High-definition multimedia interface cables are the primary cables used to transmit highdefinition digital video and audio data to consumer visual media displays. HDMI cables take encrypted, uncompressed

digital video and audio from an HD-capable source such as a Blu-ray Disc player, HD-capable digital cable box or computer and allow them to be displayed on HDTVs and high-definition monitors. HDMI technology enables a user to get both video and audio to an HDTV or computer monitor using only one cable. This is an improvement over DVI cables, which only transmit video. PCs can be attached to HDTVs if the PC has an HDMI-out port or contains a graphics card with a DVI port and a DVI to HDMI cable is used. o 3Press the "Sync" buttons on the converter units. Wait for the converter units to sync and make sure all the status-indicator lights on the unit turn green. Clear any objects that may be placed in front of the infrared sensor, as any blockage can impact the wireless signal. Unfold the antenna on each converter unit. All it takes is a warm body and a willing spirit! We all started right where you are now. I retired and moved to The Villages in June, 1997. My previous experience with computers was with specific programs built for the clinical laboratory, Quicken and a couple different word processors. I had no previous experience with the internet. Most of what I know about computers now, I learned since about August 1997. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? You can learn too if you're willing to spend the time and make the effort. Here are a few tips that helped me. I went to Windows Explorer and double-clicked each and EVERY yellow folder. I had no idea what most of them were. I would then scroll down the right side of the page where the files were listed and any file that was named README, I doubleclicked to bring it up and printed it. When we went away on trips, the 3 ring binder with the README files went with me along with my Windows for Dummies and AOL for Dummies books. I read these, highlighted them and turned corners down for things that I would try when I got home. Got a laptop later so I could try things while away. Yes, I was scared to death at first to do anything, for fear I would destroy this expensive 'toy', my computer. Often, I couldn't make it do what I wanted it to do. So I would click the X at the top right corner to get out of that program and search and read some more, ask more questions. I learned to look for each program s tutorial by bringing up the program and then clicking on HELP(or clicking the? at the right end of the menu bar) and typing in tutorial or just scrolling down the list of the HELP indexes. Often I found items that "clicked" with my memory so I would click on that help word and read about it. Now there are easier ways to learn by using the videos on YouTube.com. These are just a few of the things that I did to reduce the learning curve quickly that is part of every learning experience. I am still learning new things every day, but it does require effort and time. Learning has always been an exciting adventure for me.

I hope some little tidbit here will help you in your learning experience and encourage you to help others with what you've already learned. The motto of our club is "to learn and to pass it on". The best way to retain what you learn is by teaching another person.
