WHErE YoU HEAr WorlD renowned SINGErS AND DISCoVEr ToMorroW S STArS ToDAY Vocal Arts DC is proud to continue our distinguished history of presenting some of the world s greatest singers in recital, along with a uniquely gifted newcomer of enormous potential. Our singers showcase their extraordinary voices through the medium of classical song, their artistry distilled to its purest essence as they share timeless emotions from many cultures. From Elizabethan ballads with lute accompaniment to Latin-American works, from traditional German Lieder to Korean songs, plus the Washington premiere of a newly commissioned piece by an acclaimed American composer and works by beloved French and italian masters, our series has all that a lover of classical singing could want. This variety ensures that, whether you are a longtime devotee of Vocal Arts DC, or a newcomer to this intimate art form, you are assured of a rewarding experience as a subscriber. Sincerely, Peter Russell General Director, Vocal Arts DC Thursday, November 14, 2013 at 7:30pm Michael Fabiano tenor DANiELLE ORLANDO, piano Having catapulted to success since winning the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 2007, American tenor Michael Fabiano has gone from strength to strength at the Met, Milan s La Scala, English National Opera, and San Francisco Opera, and made a notable recital debut last year as part of the prestigious Harriman-Jewell Series in Missouri. After capturing exceptional notices in the Met s HD transmission of Otello opposite Renée Fleming this season, he will return to the Met in 2013-2014 for a new production of Die Fledermaus. Program to include works by Liszt, Duparc, and Tosti. He sings with effortless beauty of tone, and an exquisite sense of line. - TiM ASHLEy, THE GuARDiAN (LONDON) Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at 7:30pm brandon cedel bass-baritone BRiAN zeger, piano SuBSCRiPTiONS: Full subscriptions to the series of seven recitals are priced at $287 each. it is also possible to order a mini-subscription containing a minimum of three recitals in the series, with each recital priced at $45 per ticket. All concerts take place in the Terrace Theater at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, except for the recital by Lawrence Brownlee on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, which will be held in Lisner Auditorium at George Washington university. Please use the subscription form for all ticket orders, or subscribe online: www/vocalartsdc.org/subscribe. The deadline for current subscribers to renew their subscriptions is April 30. PHOTO CREDITS: Michael Fabiano by Arielle Doneson, Brandon Cedel by Peter Konerko, Ana María Martínez by Tom Specht, Luca Pisaroni by Marco Borggreve, Hei-Kyung Hong by J. Henry Fair, Iestyn Davies by Marco Borggreve, Lawrence Brownlee by Derek Blanks. A Grand Prize Winner of the 2013 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and Winner of the 2012 George London Foundation Award, Brandon Cedel joins the Lindemann young Artist Development Program at the Metropolitan Opera at the beginning of the 2013-2014 season, following a summer with Wolf Trap Opera Company as a Filene young Artist. He will make his European debut with Glyndebourne Festival in 2014. Cedel has a voice that passes the fundamental test: when he sings, you don t want him to stop. He was beautifully smooth with an elegant line and persuasive phrasing. - zachary WOOLFE, THE NEW york TiMES

Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at 7:30pm ANA MARíA MARTíNEZ soprano THOMAS JABER, piano Grammy Award-Winning soprano Ana María Martínez, a native of Puerto Rico, has become one of the world s most sought-after leading ladies in opera and concert, a favorite at the Met, Covent Garden, Paris Opera, Munich, and Vienna. Warmly remembered for her devastating portrayal of the title role in Madama Butterfly recently with Washington National Opera, Martínez combines a timbre of arresting beauty with extraordinary immediacy of expression. On this evidence alone she requires ranking among the top lyric sopranos of the day. - Max Loppert, Opera magazine Friday, January 31, 2014 at 7:30pm LUCA PISARONI bass-baritone WOLFRAM RIEGER, piano Selected by Opera News as one of the elite next wave among today s most exciting young vocal stars, Pisaroni brings an old-fashioned dash of sex appeal to an extraordinarily wide repertoire, ranging from the Baroque through the coloratura exertions of bel canto to German Lieder. Having caught all eyes and ears through his appearances in the Met s recent HD transmissions of Don Giovanni and The Enchanted Isle, he makes his Washington-area recital debut with Vocal Arts just prior to a return to the Met. Program to include works by Beethoven, Brahms, Liszt, and Reichardt. The terrific young Italian bass-baritone rattled through his show-stopping numbers with evident glee and absolute authority. - Hugo Shirley, Telegraph (London) Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at 7:30pm HEI-KYUNG HONG soprano VLAD IFTINCA, piano One of the most highly esteemed principal artists on the roster of the Metropolitan Opera, Korean-American soprano Hei-Kyung Hong commands a voice of unparalleled sweetness and purity. An exquisite musician who has won a loyal international following from London and Paris to Milan and Vienna, Hong has sung both the title role in Verdi s La Traviata and Cleopatra in Handel s Julius Caesar to overwhelming audience and critical acclaim for Washington National Opera. Program to include works by Grieg, Schumann, R. Strauss, Fauré, Bizet, Rachmaninoff, and Korean composers. Almost a quarter-century after her first Met Mimì, Ms. Hong sounded fresh and radiant, her singing distinguished by beautiful phrasing and refined pianissimos. - Vivien Schweitzer, The New York Times Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at 7:30pm IESTYN DAVIES countertenor THOMAS DUNFORD, lute With a solo album for Hyperion, Arias for Guadagni, recently selected by London s Gramophone as Best Solo Vocal Album of the Year, and a full calendar of concert and opera engagements, Iestyn Davies has become a true star among countertenors in the last several seasons. He comes to Washington on the heels of performing Oberon in Britten s A Midsummer Night s Dream at the Metropolitan Opera, a signature portrayal that has bewitched audiences in London and Houston. Program to include songs by Dowland, Purcell, Johnson, and Campion, plus the Washington-area premiere of a new work by young American composer Nico Muhly, commissioned by Wigmore Hall in London, written expressly for Mr. Davies. Iestyn Davies almost walks away with the show. The voice is utterly smooth, his agility remarkable and he dazzles in his second act showpiece. - Robert Levine, International Record Review

Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at 7:30pm GWU Lisner Auditorium LAWRENCE BROWNLEE tenor TBA, piano Back by popular demand following his wildly successful Vocal Arts DC recital debut in 2009, this stunning American tenor continues to expand his already enormous international fan base with an unbeatable mix of artistry, pyrotechnics, and sheer loveliness of sound. As an exponent of true bel canto, his interpretations bear comparison with the finest singers of any generation. He returns to DC fresh from performances at the Met in Bellini s I Puritani, with which he already wowed audiences with Washington Concert Opera. He sang with agility, elegance, and style this was a winning performance by an increasingly important artist. - Anthony Tommasini, The New York Times general information: Current subscribers requests for seating changes will be accommodated, space permitting. New subscriptions will be filled in the order received with best seats available. For the recital by Lawrence Brownlee on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, in Lisner Auditorium at George Washington University, Vocal Arts DC subscribers will be assured premium seating. Single ticket orders received with subscriptions will be processed in the order received, after subscription orders have been filled, and will be filled with best seats available. After the subscription period, full subscribers may still purchase additional single tickets directly through Vocal Arts DC at a reduced rate of $41 per recital, and mini-subscribers may purchase them at $45 per recital (full cost to non-subscribers for these tickets is $50).
