Pretest Directions: Read the passage, and then follow the directions for problems 1 4. Farmer Dave had a very nice barn where all his animals lived in cozy comfort. One day, a snake happened by and crawled into the barn. Hmm, he thought. This would be a great place for a new home. So he found a nice, dry spot in the corner under the hay and made himself at home. By and by, he started to feel a little hungry. He lay very still waiting to see if a delicious mouse might stroll past. Sure enough, a little mouse scampered across the floor. She stopped to gather some corn that had fallen on the floor. The snake eyed her but decided that she looked too thin. He decided to wait for a plumper mouse to come by. The next day, the same mouse appeared. He still did not pounce. The third day, she came again. By now the snake was really hungry. Yet he held out, hoping that a fat meal would appear. The fourth day, as the snake lay in his spot, he finally gave in to his stomach and decided that a small meal was better than no meal. However, for some reason, the mouse did not come that day. The snake began to think that perhaps this wasn t such a great home after all. He slithered out of the barn back into the field. The mouse watched from her hiding place and giggled while she ate the corn she had gathered. 1. Which word best describes the mouse? A clever B greedy C sluggish D happy 2. Michael was bouncing the ball against his foot and catching it as he walked. When they were near the entrance to the park, Michael bounced the ball a little too hard, and it got away from him. When he walked onto the grass to retrieve it, he saw something lying there. He picked it up and opened it. There was a driver s license, some credit cards, and $75 in cash. Hey, guys! Michael called as he caught up to them. As the other two boys looked at what he had found, Michael asked, What do you think we should do? Chris was quick to give his opinion. Finder s keepers, he said. Jin was a little more deliberate. Wait, he said. It would be one thing if you just found some money and had no way of telling who lost it, but there s a name and address here. We should return it. Both boys then looked at Michael. You found it. You decide what to do with it, said Jin. Michael counted the money again. That s a lot of cash $25 each if we split it but it does not belong to us. It belongs to a guy at 3117 Rocky Lane. Among the largest bears are the grizzly and the polar bear. Grizzlies have the reputation of being the most fearsome. Although polar bears are actually larger and heavier than grizzlies, the grizzly s reputation may be well earned. While polar bears can weigh over 1,000 pounds and have two-inch, hook-like claws, their grizzly cousins (at about half that weight) are more muscular and have claws that are six to nine inches long. So, it s fine for you to cuddle a teddy bear, but it would be best to avoid encountering any real bears. 5. Which statements are main ideas of the passage? Mark Yes for all that apply. 5a.
