1 - Introduction The CWR Light version is primarily intended to be used in the communication from societies to publishers, especially in cases where a publisher acquires a catalogue where the works are already registered with the society by a former publisher. The society will make an extract of the existing works in the CWR Light format and send it to the new publisher. If the information is correct and according to the new publisher's agreement stipulations, it will not re-register these works again with this society. It was agreed that for historic reasons, the level of data content in a CWR light file could be less than in a CWR or ACK file, but still to a minimum level required by Publishers in order to validate. 2 - SOC Transaction The SOC transaction is heavily based on the ACK transaction to facilitate, as much as possible, the extraction and processing of the file by societies and publishers, respectively. The idea is to use the necessary record types (ACK, (renamed to SOC), NWR, SPU, SPT, SWR, SWT, ALT) from the ACK transaction, but to strip away unnecessary fields, making only requested relevant information mandatory. The fields should retain their position and length within each record and the fields that are not used should be filled with zeros or spaces. Should a society want to use additional fields or records (e g Duration on the NWR or the instrumentation info on the INS and IND records) to send more than the required information this should be allowed. For simplicity all publishers should be written as SPU and all writers should be SWR within the SOC transaction. For displaying collection shares at least one SPT/SWT must be given for each SPU/SWR. If only one SPT/SWT is given, the territory should generally be the country of the sending society. Note that certain information additional to the requested minimum is given below, such as IPI numbers and ISWC. Naturally this is not available for all works, but if this information is available it should always be given in the SOC transaction. Note also that it is hard (and, to a certain extent, unnecessary) to enforce strict edits on the SOC transaction. The quality of legacy data is hard to guarantee and it is better that societies can send incomplete works, if that is how they presented in their systems, so that publishers can send revisions and updates of these works. This means that even some of the information listed as mandatory may be missing for some transactions. CWR08-3540 4/15
