INSTALLING THE CONSOLE The GL2 fis ino an 11U space in a sandard 19" rack sysem. Alernaively he console may be adaped for plinh or able op operaion. 19" rack widh Provide adequae space behind he rear of he console power uni for venilaion. The panel may feel warm around he power uni. This is quie normal as he chassis acs as a heasink for he inernal power supply componens. 11U space The wo M3 base securing bols each side align wih mouning recesses in he rack sysem. Moun he console using 4x M6 bols each side for maximum srengh. These should be provided by he supplier of he rack ki. The heigh does no include he conrol knobs (add 20mm) or connecor nus (add 8mm). The rack should allow a minimum side o side clearance of 450mm. The GL2 has wo suppor fee fied o he fron of he base o se he correc angle (14 degrees) for able op operaion wih adequae clearance for he connecors. Suppor he rear of he console o achieve his angle. Operaion in his way prevens inerference wih he connecors and akes up he minimum of able space. PRECAUTION! TO AVOID DAMAGE TO THE INTERNAL ASSEMBLIES DO NOT FIT SCREWS THROUGH THE HOLES IN THE SIDES OF THE CONSOLE. SECURE TO EXTERNAL BRACKETS OR FITTINGS THROUGH THE TOP PANEL RACK MOUNTING HOLES. EARTHING THE AUDIO SYSTEM The console chassis is conneced o mains earh via he power cord. FOR SAFETY REASONS NEVER REMOVE THE EARTH WIRE FROM THE MAINS PLUG. The console audio 0V is conneced o mains earh wihin he console power uni by he ground lif swich. To preven mains born and exernal inerference pick-up on he audio signal i is imporan ha his audio 0V is conneced o a good noise-free mains earh, eiher hrough he audio cable screens or by linking o a local earh. Muliple earh pahs cause earh (ground) loops which may resul in audible hum and inerference. These may be avoided by making sure ha here is only one pah o earh from each piece of equipmen, disconnecing audio cable screens a one end if necessary. Selecing he ground lif swich on he rear of he console disconnecs he console audio 0V from he chassis (mains) earh. This avoids ground loops in siuaions where he chassis mealwork is in physical conac wih anoher pah o earh, (ofen he case in 19" rack insallaions), or if audio 0V connecs o mains earh elsewhere in he sysem. Ground lif swich locaed on rear of he console power uni. Press o disconnec audio 0V from mains earh.

INTERCONNECTIONS Where possible use balanced connecions for he channel INPUTs and GROUP, L-R and MONO oupus o minimise noise pick-up. Avoid running audio cables near o mains or lighing cables or hyrisor dimmer unis, power supplies ec. These may cause audible hum and buzz. The use of low impedance sources significanly reduces inerference pick-up. Check he cables for correc wiring o avoid problems wih phase reversal and unreliable connecion. The GL2 follows he convenion for XLR pin 2 and jack ip = signal ho (+). Always use balanced cables when connecing o phanom powered microphones. MAKE SURE THAT THE +48V SWITCHES ARE OFF (UP POSITION) WHEN THE CHANNEL INPUT XLRS ARE CONNECTED TO NON-PHANTOM POWERED OR LINE SOURCES. If ground loops cause problems connec he cable screen a one end only as described below. Balanced oupus may be conneced o unbalanced inpus and vice versa by linking he signal cold (-) o 0V ground as follows: Balanced oupu o Balanced inpu - Connec cable screen a desinaion only. Balanced oupu o Unbalanced inpu - Connec screen a source only. Link he -ve oupu o 0v a he oupu connecor. Unbalanced oupu o Balanced inpu - Connec cable screen a desinaion only. Link he -ve inpu o 0V a he inpu connecor. ADJUSTING THE LEVELS For bes performance i is imporan ha he console signal levels are adjused for normal operaing level. If oo high he signal peaks will be clipped resuling in a harsh disored sound, and if oo low he signal-o-noise raio is reduced resuling in excessive background hiss. For bes resuls operae he console wih he oupu meers averaging 0 or jus below and allowing he occasional high level passage o rise ino he red. This resuls in a nominal console oupu level of +4dBu wih ample inernal headroom of +23dB o allow for he peaks. I is advisable o use an aenuaor pad if you are connecing he oupus o equipmen which does no have inpu level conrols and operaes a a much lower level. Simply reducing he fader seings (and hence meer levels) o compensae may resul in excessive background noise and breakhrough due o he reduced signal-o-noise raio. The same applies o he console monior oupu used o check he console signals hrough reference loudspeakers. The monior amplifier should be mached o he console such ha normal conrol room lisening levels are achieved wih he monior LEV conrol se around posiion '5' o '7'. Operaing a a lower posiion, say '2' or '3', degrades he oupu signal-o-noise raio and may resul in audible hum and noise. The console PFL (pre-fade lisen) / AFL (afer-fade lisen) sysem les you lisen o and check he level of signals a differen poins in he signal pah wihou affecing he main oupus. Use he channel PFL swiches o se up he inpu levels. This overrides he phones/monior oupus wih he pre-fader channel signal (in mono) and displays is level on he monior meers. Adjus he channel GAIN conrols for an average '0' reading on he meers. Use he aux, group and L-R AFL swiches o check he pos maser fader mix levels. Adjus he channel faders for opimum mix level. The normal operaing seing of he faders is a he '0' posiion, allowing 10dB of boos o he op of ravel. The red channel and group, L-R PEAK indicaors give insan warning of poenial signal overload. These illuminae 5dB before clipping. Reduce channel gain or fader seings as appropriae. Each Group fader has a meer ladder showing signal presence (dynamic indicaion saring a -20dB), 0dB level, and peak (5dB below clipping). OPTIONS AUX SENDS: Aux 1-4 and aux 5,6 are swiched pre or pos fader using panel swiches o saisfy mos applicaions wihou he need o access inernal circuis. Pre-fade is se pre-eq and pos-mue as sandard. Conac your service agen should you require alernaive seings. An opion is available o balance he aux jack oupus. Noe ha he sandard aux oupus are low impedance high level line signals which are inerference free and do no require balancing unless exremely long cables are conneced in he presence of high level inerference and hum fields. The opions should be fied only by compeen echnical personnel who have reference o he GL2 service manual. CONSOLE EXPANDER: The GL2 Sys-link opion may be insalled such ha wo GL2 consoles operae as one in a maser/slave arrangemen. This is no a user fied opion. Conac your service agen for deails.

INPUT GL2 PRECAUTION! ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT +48V SWITCHES ARE OFF (UP POSITION) WHEN THE CHANNEL INPUT XLRS ARE CONNECTED TO NON-PHANTOM POWERED OR LINE SOURCES. MATCHING THE INPUT A wide-ranging padless inpu pre-amplifier maches he conneced audio source o he console. Use he PFL sysem o se GAIN for he correc inernal operaing level (0dB on he meers). Cenre posiion provides +10dB line gain. MIC/LINE selecs a balanced mic or line XLR source. Connecing o he addiional 1/4" jack balanced line inpu auomaically overrides he XLR line inpu. For MIC INPUT only connec o he XLR socke. Selec MIC (or LINE o provide a 20dB pad for very high oupu microphones). For LINE INPUT only connec eiher o he XLR or jack connecor and selec LINE. For MIC AND LINE INPUT selecable using he swich connec mic o he XLR and line o he jack socke. Individual +48V phanom power swiches are locaed on he rear panel, recessed o preven accidenal operaion. Use only wih phanom powered microphones conneced wih correcly balanced cables. 4-BAND EQUALISER Shelving HF, LF and wo wideband peak/dip mid sweeps provide 14 db of cu and boos. EQ IN swiches he equaliser in or ou of he channel pah. Cenre deens se he response fla. The normalled INSERT socke provides a pre-eq -2dBu break poin for insering an exernal effecs or signal processing device ino he channel pah. This may also be wired as a pre-fade direc oupu by linking send o reurn in he plug and apping he signal from his poin. Use he PFL sysem o mach he insered device o he operaing level of he channel. 6 AUX SENDS 6 individual sends wih 1-4 and 5,6 swichable pre/pos fader provide effecs and foldback sends for recording or F.O.H., or monior mix sends for ON-STAGE console operaions. Inernal links for he pre-fade sends are se as sandard o pre-eq (pos-eq opion) and pos-mue (pre-mue opion). ROUTING Cenre deened PAN posiions he signal beween L (odd) and R (even) of he seleced groups/l-r mix. This posiions he signal as required in he sereo image, or may be used o roue o single mono oupus only. The 100mm long hrow FADER provides a furher 10dB boos above he normal 0 operaing posiion. MUTE swiches he channel off. CHECKING THE SIGNAL The red PEAK LED warns of poenial overload 5dB before clipping a any of 3 key poins in he channel pah. Pressing PFL roues he pre-fade signal o he console monior/meer sysem o check sound qualiy and gain seing. The PEAK LED will illuminae a HALF brighness when he PFL swich is pressed.

STEREO MATCHING THE INPUT For INPUT A se he IN A/B swich up. For INPUT B se he IN A/B swich down. MONO combines he lef and righ inpus o mono he source, or may be used o inpu a mono source o he sereo channel pah. The GAIN conrol allows a wide range of equipmen o be correcly mached o he console. 4-BAND EQUALISER Shelving HF and LF and wo fixed frequency peak/dip mid conrols provide 14dB of cu and boos. EQ IN swiches he equaliser in or ou of he channel pah. Cenre deens se he response fla. DUAL INPUT The sereo channel feaures a dual inpu which selecs beween wo alernae sereo sources. This is ideal for fas swiching beween sereo sources wihou he need o re-pach he console. I also allows connecion o sandard leads wih eiher jack or phono plugs. The sereo channels may also be used for reurns from sereo effecs processors, providing full EQ, signal checking, rouing and feeds o foldback moniors. To avoid feedback do no send he reurn back o iself hrough is pos-fade aux send. The L and R sereo signals are combined o provide he aux feeds in mono. ROUTING The PAN conrol changes is characerisics depending on he MONO swich saus. In sereo, PAN funcions as a balance conrol, usually o adjus for imbalance in he source. In mono i provides rue pan o posiion he signal in he sereo image. The 100mm long hrow FADER provides a furher 10dB boos above he normal 0 operaing posiion. MUTE swiches he channel off. CHECKING THE SIGNAL The red PEAK LED warns of poenial overload 5dB before clipping a he pre-fade L and R channel poins. Pressing PFL roues he pre-fade signal in mono o he console monior/meer sysem o check sound qualiy and gain seing. The PEAK LED will illuminae a HALF brighness when he PFL swich is pressed.

GROUP OPERATING MODE GL2 The recessed GRP/AUX REV swich deermines he way in which he group signal pah is arranged. For convenional operaion FRONT-OF-HOUSE or RECORDING (swich up) he group mix is roued o he main signal pah hrough he inser, FADER and MUTE swich o he balanced XLR oupu, while providing subgrouping, AFL monioring, signal and PEAK meering. The relaed aux mix roues hrough he roary SEND MASTER level conrol o he 1/4" jack aux oupu, wih AFL monioring available, o provide an effecs or foldback send. Wih he swich pressed (using a pen ip or similar) he group and aux mix is reversed so ha he signal pah is opimised for ON-STAGE MONITOR operaion. This feeds he aux mix hrough he main signal pah o provide a full feaure balanced sage monior send. In his mode he group mix is reroued o he relaed aux jack oupu hrough is send maser and is available for addiional monior, effecs or sub sends. I is advisable o sudy he GL2 sysem block diagram o fully undersand his flexible rouing arrangemen. RETURN/SUBGROUP To RETURN processed signals from exernal effecs devices or inpu addiional line signals o he L-R mix, or for TAPE MONITORING during muliracking, se he RET/GRP swich o he up posiion. Use he LEV and cenre deened PAN conrols o adjus he level and sereo image. SUBGROUPING enables several sounds o be combined under conrol of a single fader and hen roued o he main L-R mix. To se up a subgroup roue he required channels o a group, press he GRPswich, and adjus LEV and PAN for he desired level and sereo image in he L-R mix. Using he channel and subgroup PAN conrols i is possible o se up mono or sereo subgroups. CONTROL OF THE OUTPUTS The main oupus (group or aux mode as seleced) are conrolled by he 100mm long hrow FADERS which offer a furher 10dB boos above he normal '0' operaing posiion. MUTE swiches off he oupu. Pressing AFL roues he pos-fader signal o he console monior/meer sysem o check sound qualiy and mix level. The AFL signal is pre-mue o allow he oupu o be mued if required while checking he signal. Each main oupu has a dedicaed pos-fader LED meering sysem. SIG responds dynamically o he audio signal saring o illuminae around -20dB level. 0dB urns on a he console 0dB level (-2dBu inernal). PEAK warns of poenial overload 5dB before clipping.

MASTER MONITORING THE SYSTEM The PHONES/MONITOR secion allows he engineer o lisen o L-R (aux 5-6) eiher PRE or POST he maser faders, or 2-TRACK reurn hrough up o wo pairs of sereo headphones or monior speaker sysems while displaying he seleced source on he L and R monior meers. The peak responding LED bargraph meers are posiioned above each group srip. Pressing any AFL or PFL swich inerrups lef and righ of he monior wih he seleced signal in mono and displays AFL (AFL acive LED on) or PFL (PFL or AFL+PFL LED on) on boh meers. Source selecion follows his prioriy: PFL overrides AFL overrides 2-TRACK overrides L-R PRE overrides L-R POST 2-TRACK RECORD AND REPLAY 2 pairs of phono connecors, SEND and RETURN, allow convenien connecion o a 2-rack recorder such as cassee or DAT. The send may also be used as an addiional unbalanced L-R oupu. These connecions are se as sandard for low level operaion (-10dBV). For high level recording he balanced L-R XLR oupus may be used. MONO OUTPUT OPERATING MODE The recessed MONITOR MODE swich deermines he funcion of he balanced mono oupu. For F.O.H. applicaions (swich up) he main L and R oupus are summed o drive a cenre MONO FILL speaker sysem. Alernaively his oupu may be used for mono recording or o provide a mono broadcas feed. For ON-STAGE operaion (swich pressed) his oupu becomes AFL inerruped by PFL o drive an engineers WEDGE MONITOR sysem. The wedge mix is creaed by pressing he required aux (group) AFL swich combinaion o lisen o he monior send mix. Pressing any PFL swich allows he engineer o check he channel signals, for example while seing he gains or EQ. On-sage monior sysems usually include a graphic equaliser on each monior feed adjused o une ou he resonances which cause acousic feedback. These equalisers should be pached ino he console group insers so ha heir effec may be moniored when AFL is pressed. THE MAIN L-R OUTPUTS The L and R oupu secion is idenical o he group secion wih aux reverse swiching which configures he main oupus for aux 5, 6 when required.
