Total marks 40 The Examination which you are about to sit is based upon a recording of excerpts of music. The text of the questions you will hear is to be found in this question paper and you can follow what the speaker says. Listen carefully to the questions and to the musical excerpts upon which the questions are set. The number of times each excerpt is played is indicated in each question. Answer ALL questions. Question 2 This question features instrumental music. Five incomplete statements describing the music are set out below. You have to complete the statements by filling in the blanks. There will now be a pause of one minute to allow you to read through the question. The music will be played four times with a pause of 30 seconds between playings. You will then have a further 45 seconds to complete your answer. In the first three playings a voice will help guide you through the music. Question 4 This question is based on an arrangement of a traditional song. There are six parts to this question. Listen to the excerpt which is in F major. During this first hearing do not attempt to write. Here is the music. You now have two minutes to read the question. (a) Name the time signature and describe where it should be placed in the music. [1 mark] (b) Name the ornament you hear near the beginning of the excerpt. [1 mark] (c) Describe the rhythm of the first four notes. [1 mark] (d) The opening phrase moves by step for the first six notes. What is the interval between the sixth and seventh notes? [1 mark] (e) Name the last three notes. [1 mark] (f) Describe where the last three notes would be written on the bass stave to sound one octave lower. [1 mark] The music will be played six more times with a pause of 45 seconds between playings and a pause of three minutes before the next question starts. Question 6 This question is based on an excerpt of instrumental music. In this question you should identify the most prominent concepts in the music. As you listen, identify at least two concepts from each of the following headings. Question 7 This question is about comparing two excerpts of music. A list of musical concepts is given below. In your rough work, which will not be marked, you should select any listed concepts you hear for Excerpt 1 and any listed concepts for Excerpt 2. After the four playings of each excerpt you will be given four minutes to copy and rearrange your answers, showing which five concepts are common to both Excerpts.
