Aout the Comosition Dream Engine as commissioned y the Otto Shortell Middle School 7/8 Band in the Oneida City School District, Nicholas Anderalli r., Director. One o the tyes o ieces I like to rite or and are ieces that use a contrast eteen staccato laying and more marcato melodic material. Dream Engine is the result. The iece is set in a concert overture orm ith to ast sections ased on the same theme and a slo lyrical second section in the middle. The iece egins right o ith a short introduction o the staccato accomaniment igures eore it leads to the irst statement o the main theme. Quarter notes in the main theme should e layed ull o in contrast to the lilting staccato eighth notes. The ass line should e long as ell. Ater a ull ensemle statement o the theme, the iece moves to a ridge theme that is sort o an inversion o the main theme and is taken u y the loer voices, then the Horns/ Saxes are added on a harmony art to the melody. Transitionary material is resented next that uses used throughout the iece to connect all o the sections o the iece together. The main theme returns once more eore the iece transitions into the slo and lyrical B section. or romotional use only unlaul to coy or rint The B section should e lush and as legato as ossile to e in comlete contrast to the A section. This ill e an excellent chance to ork on the layers exressive laying. Make sure to have a lot o ruato and generous rises and alls to the lines to make it as musical as ossile. At the comletion o the B section, the A material returns ith dierent orchestration or variety. This is olloed y the transitionary material that leads to an aggressive coda that includes a it o a quote rom the B section musical material. I you so chose, a slight increase in the temo at the coda is accetale to add to excitement o the ending. It has een my leasure to have the oortunity to rite this iece. I hoe you and your students enoy it and ind it useul or your rogram.
