President s Thoughts 3/26/2010 Greetings, Spring is finally here and the plants and trees are showing signs of life, and after a day filled with discussions and brainstorming sessions at the Economic Summit hosted by our new Mayor, Rudy Jaramillo, Senator Michael Sanchez, and Congressman Jeff Bingaman, it looks like we might see new life in the Greater Belen area as well. There was a nice turnout for the event and lots of good ideas were tossed around. One of the ideas that stood out for me was a four step process that with all of us working together can help us to not only survive in these tough economic times, but to thrive. It starts with COMMUNITY, that is all of getting together to start the process. Next we need to come up with a VISION that we can all get behind. Then we need a PLAN that is measurable and achievable, and finally we need to put that plan into ACTION. Please be watching our newsletter and the News Bulletin for announcements of upcoming meetings for our business community and citizens. We all need to work together to help turn things around and make the Greater Belen Area a thriving, vibrant community again. We hope to start these meetings soon, but there is something that all of us can do right now to improve our economy and that is to SHOP LOCAL! If all of us make a conscious effort to spend our money close to home we can make a huge difference right here, right now. Instead of going to Albuquerque to shop and have lunch this weekend, why not plan on doing that right here in Belen? We have lots of choices right here close to home. I am going to spend my money here and I challenge all of you to do the same. Sincerely, Terri Young Belen Chamber of Commerce President First Community Bank

March Member of the Month Casa de Abo Casa de Abo opened in June of 2004 and now has seven employees and a gallery filled with artwork, sculptures and traditional momentos from over 75 local artists. They have expanded to a coffee house that serves lattés and cappuccinos and a delicious luncheon menu. They have many future goals including a drive through window. Casa de Abo sponsors our community with several gallery shows and local events such as Rio Abajo.
