The Museum of Modern Art Department of Film 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel: 212-708-9400 Cable: MODERNART Telex: 62370 MODART #57 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MoMA CONCLUDES ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY FILM CELEBRATION WITH 1974-1984: AN INTERNATIONAL SURVEY The Museum of Modern Art's four-part exhibition 1935-1985: 50 YEARS OF FILM AT MoMA will enter its final phase on August 10 with the opening screenings in the series 1974-1984: An International Survey. Screenings will be held in the Museum's Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters 1 and 2 through September 21. While celebrating past eras of film history, the Department of Film has from its inception also maintained a strong commitment to the contemporary cinema. In this spirit, the Department will conclude its 50th anniversary exhibition with a deliberately eclectic, informal survey of films produced throughout the world during the past decade. The selection encompasses Hollywood craftsmanship, new cinema from nations such as Senegal and Brazil, and recent work from countries with long traditions of cinematic excellence, such as France, Italy, and Germany. Late achievements by acknowledged masters such as Luis Bunuel, Akira Kurosawa, John Huston, Robert Bresson, and Ingmar Bergman will be juxtaposed with films by a vital, newer generation of directors--martin Scorsese, Bertrand Tavernier, and Wim Wenders, among others. Highlights of August's program will include Scorsese's convulsive, anti-romantic biography of prize-fighter Jake LaMotta, Raging Bull; Francesco Rosi's contemplative study of political anomie and the bonds of family, Tre Fratelli; John Cassavetes's exuberant gangland picaresque, Gloria; and Jean-Luc Godard's withering comedy on sex and capitalism, Sauve Qui Peut/La Vie. September's schedule begins with Clint Eastwood's dark, brooding exploration of sexual guilt in Tightrope, and with Jacques Rivette's transformation of the same theme into an Alice in Wonderland magic show in Celine and Julie Go Boating. Also on the program in September will be Roger Spottiswoode's up-to-the-minute political thriller, Under Fire, Ettore Scola's continually inventive La Nuit de Varennes, and two of the films that have premiered in New York under the Department of Film's auspices: Bill Forsyth's Local Hero, and Wayne Wang's Chan Is Missing (one of the discoveries in NEW DIRECTORS/NEW FILMS, the Department's annual collaborative series with the Film Society of Lincoln Center). The other series in 50 YEARS OF FILM AT MoMA have been Films From 1935, Two

No. 57 Page 2 Programs by Iris Barry, and Twenty-Five Years of Independent Narratives. lq4g_iq 7l 1974-1984: An International Survey has been organized by Stephen Harvey, assis'ant^ curator in the Department of Film, with the collaboration of Adrienne Mancia ana Laurence Kardish, curators in the Department of Film. The Department would like to thank the following organizations for their help and co-operation in the planning of this series: MGM/UA Entertainment Co., New Yorker Films, New Line Cinema, Lorimar Productions, MCA-Universal, Columbia Pictures Warner Bros., Films Inc., Concorde Pictures, Gray City Inc., Cinecom International Films, Corinth Films, Orion Pictures, Interama, Almi Films, and Paramount Pictures. For further information, the public may call (212) 708-9500. For a recorded announcement of the day's screenings: (212) 708-9490.
