CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHOD A. Type of Researh The researh onduted by the researher is using desriptive qualitative method. Aording to Wahyuni (2012:12), one of the harateristis of qualitative researh is that it is desriptive in nature. What is meant by desriptive is that in a qualitative researh the data olleted are in the form of words rather than numbers. This researh aim at desribing the phenomena found in the translation of verbal humor in Guardian of the Galaxy movie. It analyses the types of verbal humor, the tehniques used to translate verbal humor and the degree of equivalene of the verbal humor. Thus, a qualitative method is onsidered relevant to be applied in this researh. B. Data and Data Soures Shreiber (2008: 185) defines data as a olletion of information that an be in the form of numbers, words, pitures, video, audio, or onepts. More speifially, Firmin (2008 : 190) states that in qualitative researh, the term data is frequently related to words. The data of this researh are words, phrases and sentenes ontaining verbal humor found in Guardian of the Galaxy movie in English spoken expression and its Bahasa Indonesia subtitling text, while the ontext of the data is the dialogues of the haraters in Guardian of the Galaxy movie. So, the data soures are the English spoken expressions and the Bahasa Indonesia written expressions of Guardian of the Galaxy movie. 38
39 C. Researh Instruments Aording to Linoln and Guba in Vanderstoep and Johnston (2009:188) human is the best instrument in a qualitative researh. In line with Linoln and Guba, Moleong (2009: 168) points out that in qualitative researh, the researher is the enter of the whole researh proess beause he is the one who plan the researh, ollet, analyze, interpret the data, and eventually report the researh findings. In onlusion, it an be said that the researher is the main instrument in this researh. In this researh, two kinds of instruments are used onerning the method of olleting data. 1. The Researher The researher is the enter of the whole researh proess beause he is the one who plan the researh, ollet, analyze, interpret the data, and also report the researh findings. 2. Data Sheets Data sheet is the supporting instrument used to reord and lassify the verbal humor data in the movie. D. Data Colletion Tehniques The steps taken to ollet the data for this researh inlude: 1. wathing the movie several times to get an insight about the phenomena under study, whih is the translation of verbal humor, 2. transribing the English text that ontains verbal humor and their Bahasa Indonesia subtitling text, 3. identifying all verbal humor and their translations as the main data,
40 4. lassifying the verbal humor and their translations, 5. omparing the data and made lassifiation based on their subtitling strategies, 6. lassifying based on the aeptability of meaning, and 7. putting the data into the data sheet. E. Data Analysis Tehniques The data in this researh were analyzed using some steps as follows. 1. Reading In this first step all the data that had been olleted before, both from the ST and from TT, were read omprehensively. 2. Classifying The relevant data were ategorized using a table. The table was made to lassify the data into types of verbal humor, subtitling strategies used to translate the humor, and the degree of aeptability of the verbal humor. 3. Interpreting When the lassifiation was finished, the data were analyzed by interpreting eah datum to answer the researh questions. 4. Reporting In this last step, the data were presented in the disussion. Some examples from the findings were taken and further explanations of the interpretation were elaborated
41 F. Trustworthiness Moleong (2001:173) states that there are four riteria of validity and reliability to obtain trustworthiness of a data. They onsist of redibility, transferability, dependability, and onformability. This researh only employed redibility and dependability. To ahieve trustworthiness, the onepts of redibility were applied in this researh. In this researh, the researher reread both texts arefully so that the data were in aordane with the researh questions. Moreover, the redibility was also obtained by onduting triangulation tehnique. The triangulation tehnique was attained by asking other people to disuss the data in order to know the orret interpretation. The triangulators are three students of English Literature study program with translation onentration, the researher first s onsultant, and the seond onsultant. Their apability in analyzing and ritiizing translation would be in aordane with this researh. To ahieve the degree of dependability, the researher examined the data olletion and data analysis. The researher reread the data to gain ertainty and stability of the data. The researher ensured that the data were in aordane with the researh questions.
