[In 1910, Lord Kitchener nominated Alexander John Godley to lead the new Defence Forces. Major-General Godley personally supervised the desert training in Egypt but Gallipoli proved beyond his leadership capabilities. Naturally he was promoted (!) and sent to France where his incompetence contributed to heavy losses at Paschendale. His wife Louisa established and ran a convalescent home at Alexandria, and the signature on the face of the cover is hers] 947 C (B)/A- Ex Lot 947 HOSPITALS: Cover with fancy triple-circle 'AOTEA CONVALESCENT HOME/FREE/HELIOPOLIS CAIRO' cachet in black & Heliopolis cds of 26DE15 (Boxing Day), mss "Censored/WS Wallstaff" in red, roughly opened & repaired at the top; also a 'PASS' with similarly inscribed triple-oval cachet in red. [This facility was equipped entirely by the residents of Wanganui. It occupied a private house with accommodation for up to 100 patients!] (2)
