Our services for authors The freedom of selfpublishing combined with active marketing as well as the service and product quality of a publishing house The modern Concept of Publishing

AS THE AUTHOR OF A BOOK, DO YOU WANT TO... keep your creative freedom and... enjoy the legal independence of self-publishing,... publish a professional book which is actively marketed, and yet receive the same personal and individual support as from a traditional publishing house? Self- Publishing Creative freedom High royalties Quick publication No legal binding tredition with its modern innovative publishing concept combines the best of both worlds Publishing house Active book marketing Focus on quality Strong and effective distribution both locally and worldwide Personal support www.tredition.com

Dear author, Here at tredition, we provide comprehensive assistance in publishing your book. tredition offers you the chance to enjoy all the advantages of self-publishing, whilst you benefit from the service and product quality rendered by a publishing house. We allow you, the author, to make your own decisions in relation to the design and content of your book, determine your royalty and grant us non-exclusive distribution rights which can be terminated at any time. We combine this with our unique active marketing for each book and the service and product quality of a traditional publishing house. Quality does not only mean excellent support and assistance from initial contact through to publication, but also a thorough check for any possible flaws, availability of a professional cover designing tool and automated online typesetting. We produce your book in a premium-quality printed version and ensure a technically sound conversion of your document into an ebook. All titles are available in both local bookstores, major retailers, wholesalers and online shops worldwide. We offer all services needed to pave the way for your book to become a success. Since 2006, we have published more than 40,000 books as paperback, hardcover editions and ebooks. Yours sincerely, Sandra Latusseck and Soenke Schulz Founders and Managing Directors of tredition tredition: What distinguishes us Each book has its market Based on this premise, we have been offering our services to authors and companies since 2006. Independence tredition is an independent company managed by its owners. We do not belong to a large media group. This means that you may publish your book with other publishing service providers or publishing houses at any time. With tredition, authors can obtain royalty rates of up to 75% of the sale price. Available in bookstores everywhere Books published with tredition are available at all brick & mortar book stores and online retailers. Your book is distributed via the world s leading wholesalers such as Ingram, Baker & Taylor or Gardners. Our printed books are available in more than 60 countries and ebooks are available worldwide. Marketing for every book From writing and distributing a press release to listing the most important catalogues such as Edelweiss and social media marketing: Every book published with tredition is actively marketed to ensure that readers, bookstores and journalists are made aware of its publication as soon as possible.. Individual support for authors When publishing a book, it is especially important to us that the steps are simple, our system is user-friendly and our service is first class. Our publishing experts are available via telephone or e-mail, free from any obligation on your part. 4 OUR KEY SUCCESS FACTORS

ONLY A FEW STEPS TO PUBLISHING Submitting your book You can create the cover of your book with just a few clicks, either by using one of our many professional templates or by uploading your own cover design. You can then upload the interior of your book and have the typesetting done by our unique online typesetting tool or, simply provide your finished PDF. Our ISBN for your book We provide a free ISBN for each output format of your book (paperback, hardcover, ebook). Quality review by tredition Quality is in the interest of our authors, their readers and all book retailers. It is also of upmost importance to us, therefore, we check every book and give you, if required, valuable hints for improvement. Distribution via local bookstores and online shops After only three days, your book will become available to readers at local bookstores, Amazon and a thousand other online shops. All books can be purchased as an ebook and/or printed edition in more than 60 countries.. Marketing for each book The more readers hear or read about a book, the more its visibility and sales target is expanded, reaching an even higher sales market. tredition therefore provides marketing for every book published, with a bundle of promotional activities and these are free from any additional charges. We do this because we know that books sell better with our marketing mix and, after all, we profit from every book sold. ONLY A FEW STEPS TO PUBLISHING 5

AUTOMATED TYPESETTING The structure of the block of your book, i.e. the interior, usually follows certain standards the readers are familiar with. No matter how you have written your book, we have several tools that will help you during the publishing process to easily and quickly turn your manuscript into a correctly set book. You can select whether you would prefer us to create the interior (book block) online or && would like to use a PDF document you have produced. Our online typesetting tool helps you to easily convert your manuscript into a printable, properly typeset book and ebook. This also applies to the conversion of an epub (ebook) into a printable book. So, if your book has only been available as an ebook so far, in just a few steps you can publish it as a printed edition, enabling you to reach out to the largest possible group of readers. Format of your manuscript Processing Publication Word document PDF document epub document Other text formats Easily create your interior (book block) online Formatting interior Typesetting interior Word document for download and further editing Printable book (PDF) Paperback Hardcover ebook epub Mobi 6 AUTOMATED TYPESETTING

TYPESETTING BY YOURSELF Typesetting If you prefer your own typesetting rather than an automated one, you have two options. The first is to download one of our design templates and format your text file according to the specifications given for the template. Here, we have already set up a structure and all you have to do is insert your content. Or, secondly you can design the interior of your book entirely by yourself, based upon the specifications for the structure of the book (available in our Downloads ). Colored pages You can choose if you want your book to be black & white or in full color. Printing in full color is more expensive than black & white. Color pages may contain a bleed (trimming edge). Copyright page Each book must contain a copyright page (also called imprint) providing obligatory information about the book. This information is already included in our interior templates. You can find an example copyright page on our website. As you can automatically publish your book in three different output formats (paperback, hardcover and ebook), we recommend that all three related ISBNs be specified on the copyright page. TYPESETTING BY YOURSELF 7

PROFESSIONAL COVER DESIGN Design template or your own book cover? The choice is yours! We have numerous book cover templates in different styles at your disposal. You can select from various designs and adapt them to suit your individual wishes, e.g. by adding your own picture or by changing the colors and elements. A large selection of fonts are also available. Alternatively, tredition gives you the opportunity to upload your own personally designed book cover. 8 PROFESSIONAL COVER DESIGN

The trim size of your book again the choice is yours! By default, five book formats are available when using one of our cover templates. Should you design your own cover, you can choose any size between 4.72 7.48 and 8.27 11.69. 5 8 5.5 8.5 6 9 7 10 8 10 individual trim size Experts at your disposal We do not offer editing or illustration services. We only recommend trustworthy freelancers to you. The reason for that is simple. We want you to have complete freedom to choose with whom you want to work with. So therefore you do not need to take it or leave it as some self-publishing companies do. The experts we recommend have excellent credentials and some have supported hundreds of our authors. PROFESSIONAL COVER DESIGN 9

MARKETING FOR YOUR BOOK We strive to let your book stand out from the crowd and to draw attention from as many readers as possible. We promote every book actively to ensure that readers, retailers, and journalists are aware of its publication as soon as possible. Above all, excellent public relations is a significant part of a book s success. These are our strategies to ensure readers become aware of your book. Public relation for every book We write and distribute a professional press release for every book and circulate it via hundreds of news portals, news tickers, and other selected media outlets. Social media marketing We post every book on our social media channels where we have an ever growing fan base of potential readers. Video book trailer templates We provide video templates to simply create your own professional book trailer. You can post it directly on your free author website or on YouTube and other websites. Book marketing for specialist, reference and teaching books Specialist, reference and teaching books as well as academic papers are listed with the relevant information service providers, who in turn inform thousands of libraries, research institutes, businesses and authorities about the publication of your book. They receive purchase suggestions in which our books are presented in detail. Tips for self-marketing Help us to make your book a success and support distribution with your own marketing strategies because nobody knows your target readers better than you do! Use our tips on press relations, social media strategies, writing contests, readings, and much more. They are updated frequently and membership is not required. These are our strategies to make readers become aware of your book. 10 MARKETING FOR YOUR BOOK

However, there are hundreds of great designers at various price ranges out there. Find the one that best suits your needs. 14 CONDITIONS AND ROYALTIES

How much do I earn? tredition gives authors the opportunity to offer their book at the most favorable price whilst earning appealing royalties. Retail e-book 40 %* 75 % Our online shop Paperback Determined by author Determined by author Hardcover Determined by author Determined by author * equals approx. 70 % of the net proceeds How do I calculate my royalties? Your royalty amount depends on the book specification and the trim size as well as the sales price set by you. Check your individual royalty for your book in our royalty calculator Sales price set by author trade discount for bookshops print and distribution costs = royalty Daily update of your royalty account The royalty accounts of our authors are updated on a daily basis. So you can view your accumulated royalties as well as the number of copies sold in our online shop or delivered to retailers. Any credit balances of your royalty accounts are transferred monthly. Actual royalties Please note that we specify exact amounts or percentages of the net selling price. We believe this to be the most fair and transparent way of representing these figures. Other service providers may apply a different basis, e.g. the net proceeds or the publisher margin. This makes royalties seem higher but the actual figures are in fact lower. CONDITIONS AND ROYALTIES 15

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Who can publish a book with tredition? Anyone can publish a book with tredition, provided that you have the copyright or the right to publish the content and, the content is not owned by a different publisher. Books promoting violence or containing discriminatory, pornographic or any other illegal content will not be accepted for publication. How do I as the author prepare a manuscript for publication? You will find detailed instructions for designing a proper book interior in the download section of our website. We do encourage you to use our Word templates. Alternatively, you can upload your manuscript and have your book converted into a professional book by our automated typesetting tool. How is the quality of the books assured? The quality of a book is in the eye of the beholder. Poe and Pilcher are placed almost next to each other in the book store and both are bought. We therefore do not judge content but we do check each book for its linguistic quality, layout and spelling. After this check, we may give the author ideas for improvement, if needed, ensuring the author is happy with high quality work, yet still having the opportunity to make final adjustments for successful marketing. When is a contract closed and what is its duration? As soon as we have published your book, your contract will be sent to you by e-mail. We do not require a signed copy. Of course, you can view our contract online in advance. The contract duration is undetermined but has a minimum time period of one year. After one year, both parties may cancel the contract with 30 days notice until the end of a calendar month. 16 QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Can I also selfpublish my book elsewhere? Yes, as tredition does not require the exclusive publication right for your book, you may publish your book via different channels at any time, however, the ISBN assigned by tredition may not be used for other publications. What is the print run of my book? We start every publication with so-called print-on-demand (POD). This means that a book is not printed until ordered. If a title is selling well, wholesalers put copies on stock to enable overnight deliveries. This modern publishing system minimizes the risk for all parties. Can I send you my manuscript for revision? We exclusively publish books uploaded via our our website. Please note that we cannot process any books submitted to us by e-mail or regular mail. Why is my royalty share of the retail price comparatively small? It takes many steps until a printed book finds its way to a reader. Several parties are involved in this process and their work must be paid for: print company (printing, dispatch to distribution centers) wholesalers (shipping, storing, handling) && retail (delivery to bookshops, sale to consumers) && publishers (publication, listing, marketing, distribution) Retail and wholesale alone retain approx. 55% of the net sales price as profit. The remaining balance has to cover the payments to all other partners and the royalty. If you wish to receive a higher royalty, the retail price of your book must also increase. You can calculate your royalty based on any price with the help of our calculator. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS 17

BACKGROUND INFORMATION Self-Publishing a dynamic business Up to ten thousand unsolicited manuscripts are submitted to a traditional publishing house per annum. Almost none of them are eventually published. As new distribution channels and options of publication make it increasingly simple to publish a book on your own or with the help of a service provider, more and more authors are opting for self-publishing. Today, almost 40% of all printed new publications are self-published titles and this figure is increasing all the time. It is becoming increasingly important for an author to stand out from the masses with high quality in terms of content and design, as well as sound marketing and promotion of the book. Relevance of e-books It is a common mistake to reduce self-publishing to the publication of e-books. There are readers who only buy paper books. Some only buy hardcover books with no expense spared. Should you intend to publish your book as an ebook only and not as a paperback and hardcover edition, you will miss out 80 90% (depending on genre) of your potential turnover and royalties. Extremely low prices in the e-book segment along with a constant rise in the number of titles has led to a continuous decline in profits for individual titles. A good reason to publish a book not only as an ebook!! Making sure that your book is available through every possible channel It is not just a matter of having an ISBN, but predominantly having strong distribution to make sure that your book is available across the entire market. In order to check the availability of books from a self-publishing service provider, you can go to bookstores and online bookshops and look for books published by said service provider. You will be surprised how bad the availability is with some of the larger service providers. Bookstores and Amazon When publishing with tredition, your books will be available from all relevant wholesalers (Ingram, Baker & Taylor, Gardner). This is very important as it enables bookstores to obtain the books through their familiar channels without having to order them separately from the publishing house. You can check whether our competitors offer this too. Pay attention to whether a book is available from Amazon directly or only at the Marketplace where buyers must be willing to pay for shipment. tredition books are directly available from Amazon and are usually on stock. 18 BACKGROUND INFORMATION
