1) Grid-Tie Installation Block Diagram 2) Steps to follow: The installation of grid-tie system involves two steps: Initial Setup Complete Systems Installation 2.1) Initial Setup In order to use the Aurora inverter with the WindTronics wind turbine, the inverter has to be configured with correct settings. To do this, the following tools are required: DC power supply or power adapter capable of supplying 48 Volts DC and 0.5 Amps (i.e. part number GS25U48-P1J from www.trcelectronics.com) Aurora Installer software (on CD that comes with Aurora inverter or downloadable from website) USB2.0 cable (not supplied with the Aurora inverter) typical for many current printers. The driver for this cable must be installed from the CD or downloaded from the website Configuration File, supplied by Windtronics. 2.1.2) USB2.0 Cable and Cable Driver You will need a USB2.0 cable as shown below to use with Aurora Installer Software. This cable is not supplied with the inverter. Figure 2 The driver of this cable can be found in the software CD supplied with the inverter. Open the contents of the CD supplied with the inverter and do the USB driver installation (search for a USB driver installation folder in the CD). Once you have all the tools needed to do the Initial Setup, perform the following steps: 2.1.4) Initial Setup Main Steps: 1) First you need to power up the inverter by connecting the inverter to the DC power supply. Set the power supply to output 42-50 Volts dc and connect the positive terminal of the power supply to the +IN DC INPUT of the Aurora inverter and negative terminal of DC power supply to -IN DC INPUT of Aurora inverter. Refer to the following picture: Aurora Inverter Figure 4 In the picture above, the white wire (with red tape on it), which is the positive terminal of the DC power supply, is connected to +IN and the black wire, which is the negative terminal of the DC power supply, is connected to the -IN terminal of the Aurora inverter. Warning: Before turning ON the power supply, make sure that the +IN is connected to power supply s positive and -IN to negative terminal of power supply. Reversing the polarity will damage the inverter. 2) Turn ON the DC power supply. You will see missing table on the inverter display. Now connect the USB cable supplied with the Aurora inverter to the USB port of your computer and other end to the Aurora inverter. Figure 5 - Aurora Inverter USB port (Figure 5) 3) Once the inverter is ON and the USB2.0 cable is connected to your laptop, start the Aurora Installer Software on your computer. You will see following screen (note: it will say This is a debug version ): Select PLM under the Communication Type tab. In the COM port field select the drop down list and you will see only one port as an option. Select that and press OK. Click on the arrow shown by yellow circle. You will get another screen as shown below: Select Extended option. It will ask you for a password at this point. The default tab you see may be the Monitor tab. Click on the Wind Configuration tab and you will see the screen above. As you can see, there are many tabs in this screen. Select Edit under the Mode tab. Click on the File option on the top left corner of this screen, and then select Open. If message appears File not saved ok to continue, select Yes. Browse to the location where the Configuration File (provided by WindTronics) is saved and open it. Go to next page. Aurora Grid-Tie Installation Instructions Rev4.1 29Apr11 9
Once you have opened the WindTronics Configuration File you will see that new values have been loaded in the table. Now select On Line under the Mode tab and hit the Send button on the bottom right hand of the screen. After this, under the Status tab you will see Sending Table. Wait for a while until the table is sent successfully. Warning: Don t change any value on the screen manually. The "Configuration File" will load all the required values. Once the table is sent, you can close the Aurora Installer Software on your computer and then disconnect the USB2.0 cable. Aurora Grid-Tie Installation Instructions Rev4.1 29Apr11 10
2.1.5) Configuring the Grid Setting on Aurora Inverter Close the Aurora Installer Software on your computer. On the Aurora inverter, hit the ESC key (on right side of inverter display). You will see Statistics, hit Up or Down key to scroll through the following menu: Go to Settings and it will ask you for a password. Hit Enter four times to enter 0000 as your password. You will see following screen: After entering the password, you can scroll through the following menu: Note: You may not see all the menu options listed above or you may have additional menu options. Select Set Vgrid and hit Enter. Scroll through the menu and you will see following Options: In the picture above, the top line specifies the voltage option that can be set and the bottom line shows the value of the voltage that is currently selected. In the picture above, 208V single phase is selected as the Grid Voltage. For the PVI-3.0-OUTD-US-W model number, you will have three options for the grid voltage: 208V single phase (two hot wires), 277V single phase (one hot and one neutral wire) or 240V split phase. Select the one that is available at the installation site. 2.1.6) Configuring the Alarm trip point (for the Turbine Brake/Dump Load): On the Aurora inverter, hit the ESC key (on right side of inverter display). Go to Settings, enter the password 0000 and then scroll through the menu until you see Alarm. Select Alarm and hit Enter. You will see following screen: Select Fault and hit Enter. Hit Esc twice to go back to the home screen. At this point you have successfully configured the Alarm Relay on the Aurora inverter to stop the WindTronics wind turbine in the event of fault. 2.1.7) Entering the Cash value for energy output savings: On the Aurora inverter, hit the ESC key (on right side of inverter display). You will see Statistics, hit Up or Down key to scroll through the following menu: Go to Settings, enter the password 0000 and then scroll through the menu until you see Cash. Select Cash and hit Enter. You will see following screen: You can set any name you want for your country s currency here. For an example you can set USD in the Name field for US dollars. Just hit Up or Down arrow key until you get the desired letter and then hit Enter to select that letter. Your cursor will automatically move to a new position. Then enter the selling rate of the electricity per kilowatt hour (kwh) charged in your area. When done, hit Esc key twice to get to the home screen. Requirements for the Complete System Installation are as follows: Initial set up of the Aurora inverter must be performed first. Make sure that you perform the initial setup with the Configuration File supplied by WindTronics. Wind Turbine Grid-Tie Junction Box Aurora Inverter AC Grid (either 208V 3-phase delta or 240V split phase or 277V 3-phase Y) Cables and Disconnects Following is an overview of the complete set up: Note: The wire gauge for power wires should be as follows: #10 for upto 150 feet (use #6 for ground) #8 for upto 200 feet (use #4 for ground) The wire gauge for communication cable should be #20. 2.2.1) Connecting Grid-Tie Junction Box to Aurora Inverter: The junction box will be pre-wired to the wind turbine. Connect the Turbine DC + terminal in the grid-tie junction box to +IN DC INPUT of the Aurora inverter and connect the Turbine DC - terminal in the grid-tie junction box to -IN DC INPUT of the Aurora inverter. The ground wire from the junction box must NOT be connected to the ground of the Aurora inverter. The turbine must be separately grounded following proper grounding procedures as per the local electrical code. For communication cable, connect the DP and + terminal (on the right-hand side of DP) to the Alarm NC and Alarm C terminal on the Aurora inverter. The wire gauge for these wires should be #20. At this point, the connections between the grid- tie junction box and the Aurora inverter are complete. 2.2.2) Grid Connections Next, grid connections must be completed. There are three possible grid configurations that can be connected to the Aurora inverter as shown: So, if we have 208V 3-phase delta configuration then the two hot wires L1 and L2 must be connected to terminal Grid 1 and Grid 2 of the Aurora inverter respectively. Likewise, above table must be referred for any other configuration. The installation of the Aurora Grid-Tie System is complete at this point. 3) Aurora Communicator software installation This software is NOT required for the installation. It is monitoring software that is used to monitor the status of the wind inverter in real time, its power extraction, turbine voltage, grid voltage, faults and alarm etc. Some of the parameters are also displayed on the Aurora inverter display screen. Tools required for this software are following: RS485 to USB converter and its driver CAT5 cable Following is the link to download Aurora Communicator Software: http://archive.power-one.com/renewable-energy/downloads.php Click on the link shown by red arrow in order to download the software. Procedure to setup a USB to RS485 converter: You will need a USB to RS485 converter in order to connect your laptop to the Aurora inverter. The following is a picture of a sample USB to RS485 converter: When you flip this converter over, the other side will have terminals as shown in the picture below: You will need to use just three wires of a standard cat5 cable to connect this converter to the Aurora inverter. The blue wire connects to terminal 1 which is T- or D-. The white wire connects to terminal 2 which is T+ or D+. Finally the green wire connects to terminal 5 which is GND. After this you must also install the USB to RS485 driver software on your laptop. You can find the driver on the CD supplied with the converter. Connecting USB to RS485 converter to Aurora Inverter On the Aurora inverter, you will see a terminal named RS485. It will have three terminals named +T/R, -T/R and RTN. Connect white wire of your USB to RS485 converter to +T/R terminal, blue wire to -T/R and green wire to RTN. Refer to the following picture: Aurora Inverter At this point, you are done with the tools and software required. You can now start your Aurora Communicator software and connect your laptop to the inverter using the USB to RS485 converter.
