Parenthetical Documentation - using ( ) to identify your source In the MLA format, parenthetical or in-text documentation is used to briefly identify the sources of information you have borrowed in writing your paper. Parenthetical documentation should be integrated smoothly into the text of your paper, rather than listed separately. Cite the source right in the text of your paper. If the readers want to get more information, they can go to the Works Cited list at the end of your paper. If the author s name is mentioned in your writing (this is called a "signal phrase"), you only need to put the page number in parentheses at the end of the sentence. The reader can go to the list of Works Cited at the end of the paper to get the complete citation. What if you cannot find a page number? Use a section number if it is given; otherwise just use the author s name or, if no author is given, the first words of the title. Ross Parke notes that "natural fathers aren't the only ones raising children on their own. As more families split up, social workers note that stepfathers increasingly are being called on to bring up other people's kids" (52). According to Bernard Farber in Encyclopedia Americana, there is a trend toward waiting to marry and toward postponing the birth of the first child (6) According to the website Our Fathers, "Almost 20 percent of fathers ask for child custody after divorce." Examples- Parenthetical or In-text Citations When you use the author s name in your sentence: Ross Parke notes that "natural fathers aren't the only ones raising children on their own. As more families split up, social workers note that stepfathers increasingly are being called on to bring up other people's kids" (52). When you do NOT use the author's name in your sentence: Child support payments can be withheld from wages in 45 states (Schorr 33). When you cite more than one work or example by the same author: One theory emphasizes the principle that dreams express profound aspects of personality (Foulkes, Sleep 184). But investigation shows that young children's dreams are rather simple and unemotional (Foulkes, Dreams 78). When the work you are citing has multiple authors: At the turn of the century many men worked long hours, which "entailed their absence from the family for most of the day: that was not a rejection of fatherhood but a necessary element of it" (McKee and O'Brien 54). When there is no author: "Fathers today no longer know who they are or what their wives and children expect from them" (Fathers Confused 5), and this increases the likelihood they will abandon their families. 5

What else should I know about ACC Libraries? Here are some reminders from ACC Libraries: - Students may checkout tablets, laptops, calculators and much more! - Off-campus library users - students and faculty - have full access to all online databases (periodicals and reference sources) and our collection of full-text e-books. Users must enter their ACCeID when prompted. - Support for students and faculty is available via in-person, telephone, email, and live chat assistance and this chat assistance is available 24/7. - There is an ACC library at every campus and expert research librarians are available to help with any class assignment. - A current, valid ACC ID card serves as the user's library card and students may acquire an ID card at any campus Student Services Welcome Center. - ACC students (and faculty) can get a free TexShare card, which allows limited book checkout at most Texas libraries, including UT, Texas State, and St. Edward's. The application process must begin with an in-person at an ACC library. A current, valid ACC ID is required. - Check the citation tools in library databases for MLA 8 th edition citations. If the citation tool says 7 th edition or does not state which edition, students will need to edit the citation to create the 8 th edition, which meets the requirements for the assignment. Since the 8 th edition is new, some database vendors have not yet updated their citation tools. Have a great semester!!!
