Chamber music plays a central role in Klaus Huber s oeuvre. There is a great variety of instrumentation from almost two dozen solo works for almost all usual instruments to the traditional trio, quartet, and quintet versions up to rather more exotic instrumentations with basset horn, mandolin, harp, or accordion. Within this field of composition he has, time and again, opened up new ways of composing, and many of his works can be considered exemplary for their type. With their highly differentiated musical language and subtle power of expression they are, simultaneously, unique rehearsal as well as study objects for today s practice of performance. In all this, the ear remains the last instance, and thanks to Huber s excellent knowledge of instruments he is a violin and viola player even works based on rather unusual techniques always remain within the bounds of possible performances. There is a dense network of references to the musical tradition of the Middle Ages by way of Renaissance, Baroque, and modern classical music. He also and explicitly refers to Mozart in several instances, thus in his chamber concerto Intarsi for piano and large ensemble and in the string quartet Ecce homines. For this reason we can, upon request, integrate works by Mozart into the course programme. www.klaushuber.com
The course will be held at Chesa da Cultura on the Lake of St Moritz from September 20 th till September 28 th, 2005 Klaus Huber will head the workshop and be present at Chesa da Cultura as composer-in-residence. With Jean-Jacques Balet, Walter Grimmer, and Katharina Rikus, Klaus Huber will have three outstanding interpreters to support him. The course in particular addresses young musicians and pursues the following objectives: - interpretation and rehearsal of chambermusic works by Klaus Huber analyses of his works - upon agreement, rehearsal of individual works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart The works Klaus Huber considers suitable for a concert will be performed within the scope of a final concert. To allow for a fertile, interesting co-operation, the works to be rehearsed should already be prepared by the beginning of the course. You may participate in a Preparatory Workshop held on August 26 th /27 th, 2005, at Chesa da Cultura with Klaus Huber and Jean-Jacques Balet to familiarize yourself with these works. This introductory week-end is voluntary and included in the course fee.
