Friday July 28 th Sale Hours 8:00-5:00 Saturday July 29 th Sale Hours 9:00-1:00 Stephenson Township Hall Next to Menominee County Library Review your media collection. Do you have any books, DVD s, CD s, or children s books to donate? Bookmobile Fundraising Moby, which has been the library s bookmobile since 1999, is due for replacement. The library board has begun a fund-raising effort and will be holding a special family-friendly day at the Hannahville Island Convention Center on October 15, 2017, from noon to 3:30 (Central Time). Join the library board, the Friends, and other library supporters for what will surely be an enjoyable event. There will be a buffet, an auction, a silent auction, and fun activities to keep the children entertained. Everyone is welcome to attend. Tickets will be available at the door for $20 for adults, $10 for youth 5-12, and FREE for children four and under. The library is close to reaching its goal for the bookmobile (approximately 87%), and there s a way for everyone to help. Attending the fundraiser on October 15 th is one way, but contributing item/s for the auction is another. Contact the library for pick-up. If you d like to donate money, send a check made out to All donations are deeply appreciated, and major donations have special recognition. Pick up a donation sheet at the library or call the library to have one sent to you. Make out checks to Menominee County Library. Categories for donations are: $250 (memorial shelf purchase) $500 (sponsor plaque and two dinner tickets) $1,000 (sponsor plaque and 4 dinner tickets) $2,500 (handicap lift sponsorship, sponsor plaque, and eight dinner tickets) OUR OLD FRIEND MOBY WILL BE AT THE MENOMINEE COUNTY FAIR. STOP IN TO BROWSE AND CHAT.

Fond Farewell to Linda Cooley Plant Sale Linda Cooley, the librarian for the Hermansville branch, has decided to retire. We will miss her and the friendly smiles she has brought to our northernmost patrons. July 20 th will be her last day, and the Friends join the Stephenson staff, the Hermansville patrons, and the library board in wishing her a very happy retirement. There will be a public reception for Linda at the Hermansville branch on July 20 th from 10:30 to 1:00. Come and enjoy cake and punch while you chat with Linda and convey your thanks for her years of assistance to all the Hermansville area patrons. The Friends annual plant sale took place on Saturday, May 27 th on the library lawn. Thanks to the very generous donation from our supporters, we had a wide selection of plants, garden tools, and ornaments to offer customers. The Friends helping at the event were kept busy organizing plants, pricing items for sale, and working at the cashier s tent. We had quite a line of buyers waiting to pay, so having a few more people totaling up orders would be helpful at next year s sale. This year s sale brought in over $1,000, and we will use it as always in supporting library projects. The sale also provided an opportunity to sell tickets for this year s raffle. We brought in almost $100 as a head start on the raffle ticket sale. Eclipse on August 21 NASA has donated special glasses for viewing the eclipse. USE THE GLASSES. DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE ECLIPSE! Visit the library to pick up the special glasses for viewing the eclipse. To see an animation of what we will see here, go to https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/in/usa/menominee. To view the eclipse live on August 21, 2017, go to https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov. In Stephenson we will not be able to see the total eclipse, but the partial eclipse will be exciting. The library s viewing (with the special glasses) will begin at 11:54 AND END AT 2:36. The most complete coverage will be at 1:16. Credit for the picture shown above: Time and Date AS 1995-2017. Eclipses in Menominee, Michigan, USA. Friendly Focus: Myrt Anderson Myrt Anderson says she could have described herself as a friend of the Menominee County Library a long time before she knew this official organization even existed. Her early childhood and elementary school days were spent in Daggett. She learned to love books and was always eager to enter that magical place called the bookmobile! And now, 60 years later, she can still feel that excitement and anticipation whenever she walks into the library. Retirement led Myrt s husband Ed and her back home, and it didn t take very long until she officially became a Friend and became involved in helping our library become this very special place. She especially enjoys helping with the annual book sale and the children s pajama parties. She appreciates the many ways our library daily reaches out to become a part of the children s lives in our community. She is a part of the writer s group and Turning Leaves Book Club. Myrt has found that friendships that grow around words, ideas, and shared books are very rich ones! Before returning to Menominee County, Myrt attended Wheaton College, taught elementary school, lived in Appleton, WI, and then spent over 30 years in Ironwood, Michigan. Ed and Myrt raised their four children in Michigan s snowbelt. She treasured the opportunity to be a full time mom and still work part time as a teacher/aide for handicapped children. Myrt says that, of course, there were always books at the center of her life. She worked at a local bookstore and spent many hours editing her good friend Amy s self-published books about her family s immigration from Holland during WW2 and life in her beloved Upper Peninsula. Her favorite books have always been good novels, classics, memoirs, and history. She admits that she has a compulsion to finish every book she starts and doesn't think she was ever convinced she had wasted those hours. Myrt and Ed love to travel, and her favorite souvenirs are books purchased at a special place. Myrt says it is a privilege to be part of the Friends of Menominee County Library. The library staff have become personal friends who know her name and recommend whatever new book has arrived just for her! 3 P a g e
