ABOUT THE PROGRAM: stories behind the music Steinway & Sons: Founded in 1853, Steinway & Sons is one of the last remaining factories where each piano is made completely by hand by skilled artisans, in a process stretching longer than a year. While there were once over 200 piano companies in the New York area, Steinway is the only one to remain. Generations of artisans have developed the methods used today including over 125 patented features and processes handed down from one craftsman to another. Not a single step is outsourced or machine-produced. A Steinway concert grand is comprised of more than 12,000 individual parts. Over 98% of active concert pianists choose to perform on Steinway instruments. Alon Goldstein and the Philharmonic s artistic administrator David Gasper spent a day at the famed Steinway selection rooms and factory to consider several candidates and choose the instrument which would best complement the acoustics of its new home, the Vets.
