Music Minor Information Packet 18 units of approved Music Courses Earning a minor in Music from the School of Music & Dance at SJSU requires a student to earn a minimum of 18 university units of study within five areas of music study: 1. Music Fundamentals/Music Systems & Theory/Aural Skills 3 units 2. Concert Attendance 2 units 3. Perfomance Skills 2 units 4. Music Ensemble Performance 2 units 5. Support Courses 9 units Please note that the SM&D currently requires that six units of this minor be upper division (100-level courses). Some of the courses included in the Support Courses area also count as SJSU General Education courses. These courses can count both for the Music Minor and for GE credit: MUSC 10A Music Appreciation Lower division GE Area C1 MUSC 19 Music in World Cultures Lower division GE Area C1 MUSC 117 Music of Latin America Upper division GE Area V MUSC 120 Worlds of Jazz Upper division GE Area S Courses taken at a California Community College that articulate with SJSU courses will count towards a minor. The music minor adviser must approve other courses or courses taken at a college or university that are not on the articulation website. Students who are qualified instrumentalists and vocalists are strongly encouraged to enroll in SJSU s excellent ensembles to enrich their experience in music. Students interested in pursuing a Music Minor should first read this Music Minor Information Packet, then complete and print the appropriate Change of Major/Minor Request form from the SJSU website (www.sjsu.edu/registrar/forms/), and then make an appointment with the Music Minor Adviser: Dr. Janet Averett, (Music Room #253), janet.averett@sjsu.edu, 408.924.4682 (NOTE: email is the quickest method of contact.)

Music Minor Information Packet continued... A few details: The appropriate Music Fundamentals/Music Systems & Theory/Aural Skills courses are determined by a placement exam that is administered at the beginning of each semester. Music Minors should take the Freshmen Exam. Consult the SJSU Schedule of Classes (printed and online versions available) and attend the first class meeting of MUSC 9 or MUSC 1A. No makeup exams will be offered, so missing this exam will delay your progress by a full semester. Concert Attendance is a Credit/No Credit course that requires students to attend twelve SJSU music recitals during the semester. Students register for MUSC 081 or 181. For all SJSU Music events, your Student ID card will be swiped at the end of the concert to verify your attendance. Lists will be posted in the music building at the end of the semester so that you may verify that you have attended 12 concerts and met the requirement for the course. In the meantime, students must keep track of concert attendance. Music Ensembles require performance auditions prior to enrolling in those courses. Please check with the music office, the catalog and the Music Auditions portion of the website (http://www.sjsu.edu/music/auditions/) for the date, time and place prior to the beginning of the semester. Scroll to Major Ensemble Auditions. Piano Proficiency (MUSC 25A & 25B) Students with sufficient piano skills can get credit by exam for one or both courses that teach piano. Piano Proficiency testing takes place on the days before classes start. To sign up for testing, go to http://www.sjsu.edu/music/auditions/ and scroll down to Piano Proficiency to see the requirements for testing out of 25B. Be sure to tell the instructor that you are a minor and would like to test out of one or both courses and also receive credit to apply to your minor. If you test out of one or both courses, you must enroll to receive credit by exam. A brief overview of the piano skills courses: MUSC 25A All major and minor scales, two octaves (ascending and decending), hands separately. Bartok Mikrokosmos, Book 1 Lyke Keyboard Musicianship, Chapters 1-4 MUSC 25B Pass MUSC 25A with final grade of B or better, or test out of MUSC 25A via Placement Exam. In all cases, a minimum of 6 units of upper-division course credit must be completed at SJSU. Music Use Fee All music students, including Music Minors, must pay a music use fee of $30 each semester they are enrolled in any music course. This fee is paid directly to the Bursar s office and students then bring their receipt to the Music Office to get a Music Use Fee registration card. This fee supports the extra expenses that are unique to a music program including equipment maintenance, music purchase, maintenance of pianos, recording studios, concert hall, etc.
