Halifax All-City Music Ensembles 2016-17 Junior High and High School Students Auditions and requirements Come Make Music With Us!

All-City Music is a vibrant, growing music education program that is funded by the Halifax Regional Municipality and staffed and supported by the Halifax Regional School Board. Twenty-five hundred students study strings, band, choir, jazz and orchestra. All-City Music is offered at no charge to students. We are reaching out into the community to create life long learners, and creative, critical thinking students. Our programs serve both to provide music education to anyone who wants, and to support enhanced and enriched experiences for those who want more. The following ensembles are available for students who are in grades 7 to 12 in the 2016-17 School Year. Students and parents may contact the conductor of the ensemble for more information. Orchestras and String Ensembles Halifax Schools Symphony Orchestra This is an auditioned symphony orchestra made up of wind, brass, percussion and string students from grades 9-12. This orchestra rehearses Tuesday afternoons from 4:30-6:30 at the Halifax Music Centre on Oxford Street. Nathan Beeler conducts this ensemble, which is the only high school symphony orchestra in Nova Scotia.Auditions will be Tuesday, June 8 th from 4:00-7:00. Students are asked to email nbeeler@hrsb.ca for an appointment and for audition requirements. Halifax All-City Junior High Chamber Orchestra This is an auditioned junior high school orchestra made up of woodwinds and strings from grades 7-9. This ensemble rehearses on Wednesdays from 5:00-6:30 at Citadel High School. Eric Ogden conducts this ensemble. Auditions will be Tuesday, June 8 th from 4-7 in the Music Room of Citadel High School. Please contact eogden@hrsb.ca for audition requirements and an appointment. Honour Violins This is an auditioned violin ensemble made up of students from grades 7-12. Honour Violins rehearse on Thursday nights from 4:30-6:30 at the Music Centre. Auditions will be from 4:00-5:30 on June 7 th and June 14 th at the Music Centre. Students will be able to sign up for auditions in many ways. At the last orchestra work shop for grade six students, at the music centre, or by contacting janetdunsworth@gmail.com Halifax All-City Fiddlefax This is an ensemble for students from grades 6 and up. To play in Fiddlefax you must be recommended by your violin teacher. Fiddlefax students explore Celtic and Maritime fiddle styles in a fun atmosphere. Rehearsals are Tuesdays 4:00-5:00 pm at the Halifax Music Centre. You must be in your school violin group and you must be able to read music. Sight reading exercise will be given. Wind and Jazz Ensembles Halifax All-City Wind Ensemble This is an auditioned Wind Ensemble made up of students primarily from grade s 8 through 12. This ensemble rehearses Thursdays from 4:00-6:00 at the Halifax Music Centre on Oxford Street. Interested students are invited to an open rehearsal on Thursday June 2nd from 4-4:45. Auditions will take place at the Music Center on June 9th and 16 th (if necessary) between 4 pm and 6:30pm. Students may book an appointment by calling the music center at 421-6700 or sign up at the music center in the basement of Oxford School. Nathan Beeler will conduct this ensemble in 2016-17. Halifax All-City St. Margaret s Bay Honour Band This is an auditioned concert band made up of students from grades 7-12.The St. Margaret s Bay Honour Band rehearses on Thursdays from 6:30-8:00 at Five Bridges Junior High School. Students will be required to play Bb, Eb and F concert one octave, as well as prepare a solo or a line from your method book. Students will also be asked to sight-read. Auditions will be on Thursday, June 10 th from 6:00-8:00. Please contact nbeeler@hrsb.ca for an appointment. Halifax All-City Senior Jazz Ensemble This is an auditioned jazz ensemble primarily made up of students from grades 10-12. This ensemble rehearses on Wednesdays from 4:00-6:00 at the Music Centre. Halifax All-City Intermediate Jazz Ensemble This is an auditioned jazz ensemble primarily for students in grades 7-10. This ensemble rehearses on Mondays from 4:00-5:30 at the Music Centre. Halifax All-City Bedford Jazz Ensemble This is an auditioned jazz ensemble primarily for students in grades 7-10 from the Bedford, Hammonds-Plains, and Sackville area. This ensemble rehearses on Mondays from 4:00-5:30 in Bedford. This ensemble is conducted by Katelyn Gillis. Auditions will be on Monday, June 7th from 4:00 to 6:00 in Bedford. Lighthouse Boys Choir Choirs This is an auditioned choir made up of boys from grades 3-8 with unchanged voices. They rehearse on Mondays from 6:00-7:30 pm in the music room (2nd floor) of Tantallon Senior Elementary. Auditions Thursday, June 2nd & June 9th 6:00-8:00 pm. Tantallon Senior Elementary School. Halifax Boys Honour Choir This is an auditioned choir made up of boys in grades 4-8 with unchanged voices. They rehearse at the Halifax Music Centre (lower floor of Oxford School) on Wednesdays from 4:00 5:30 pm. Auditions will take place at the Halifax Music Centre between 4:00 and 5:30 pm on May 31 and June 1. Students will be asked to sing O Canada, Frere Jacques and do some basic aural and rhythm exercises. Contact Pam Burton (pburton@hrsb.ca) with questions. Halifax Youth Honour Choir This is an auditioned choir made up of girls in grades 7 and up. They rehearse at the Halifax Music Centre (lower floor of Oxford School) on Tuesdays from 4:30 6:30 pm. Singers are to come prepared to sing "O Canada" and will be led through basic vocal exercises For more information and to book an audition contact kvincent@hrsb.ca Soundtrax Choir This is an auditioned Choir made up of boys and girls from grades 9-12. Rehearsals are Thursdays 4:30-6:30 pm at the Halifax Schools Music Centre. Auditions are Thursday, June 2 nd, 4-7 and Friday June 3 rd, 4-6. Halifax Music Centre Please prepare one song that demonstrates both your vocal and expressive range. Please provide one copy for the accompanist. You do not have to bring an accompanist.) Bedford Voices This is an auditioned choir made up of girls and boys from grades 7-12. Rehearsals are Wednesdays from 5:45-7:45 at in Bedford. Auditions will be on Wednesday, June 8 th from 6-8 in the Music Room of Charles P. Allen High School. Please prepare one song that demonstrates both your vocal and expressive range. Please provide one copy for the accompanist. (You do not have to bring an accompanist.) Students will be taken through aural skills and some sightreading exercises. Students should arrive 10 minutes early to fill out an audition form. Jazz Voices This is an auditioned choir that focuses on jazz singing and improvisation. It is for male and female students from grades 9-12. Auditions are Thursday, June 2 nd, 4-7 and Friday June 3 rd, 4-6. Halifax Music Centre Please prepare one song that demonstrates both your vocal and expressive range. Please provide one copy for the accompanist. (You do not have to bring an accompanist.) Students will be taken through a blues scale exercise as well as other aural skills exercises. Students should arrive 10 minutes early to fill out an audition form. 4

The students who take part in the ensembles that Halifax All- City Music offers must be members of their own school music programs and ensembles.
