Rehearsal Techniques That Work

Transcription:

This audition is for the All District Jazz event being held April 14 th 16 th, 2011 at Mt. Dora High School. The event is being held separate from the Concert Band to enable the participants the opportunity to perform in both groups, therefore gaining maximum experience in both settings. It is highly recommended that students auditioning for the ADB Jazz Ensemble also audition for the Concert Band as this is our primary ensemble to learn many fundamentals of ensemble musical performance. Both ensemble experiences intertwine regarding performance fundamentals and are invaluable experiences towards total musical growth. Winds (Individual Audition) 1. Perform the following 8 Major Scales (2 Octaves) in Swing Pattern in under 2 Minutes: G, C, F, B b, E b, A b, D b, G b (F # ) 2. Perform Audition Excerpt 3. Sight Read 4. Performers interested in Lead Trumpet should perform the Prepared Audition Excerpt TWICE. The first time they should read it as is with the final seven measures in the lower octave; the second time they should read the final seven measures in the higher octave. Rhythm Section (Group Audition) This unique setting will enable our adjudication panel the opportunity to work with the entire group of auditioning students to determine which set up of performers will best work together during the All District Jazz event. This portion of the audition will be at the end of the audition block to enable each performer the ability to be present in the group setting. Each portion of the audition will work in the following manner: 1. Random selection of one auditioning member for each rhythm section instrument: Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drums, Auxiliary Percussion. 2. Interchange performers between repetitions to allow for multiple rhythm section layout possibilities. 3. Perform F Blues (Swing) to determine ability and adaptability of each performer. a. Change Style between Rock and Latin as well on the same F Blues chord changes. 4. Perform audition excerpt to determine preparedness of each player and non-verbal communication skills in the rhythm section setting. Interchange as needed. 5. Sight Read selected excerpts from substantial Jazz Literature as a rhythm section. Interchanging will take place as needed. Piano Auditions: Use the top stave for the melody (right hand) and use the bottom stave for the accompaniment (left hand). Feel free to change octaves and/or voicings as you like. Piano, Guitar, and Bass Auditions: Use the written notes and chord changes as a guide to personalize the parts. Be prepared to play the written portion as well as any embellishments that you may have added to create more musicianship within the part. Drum Set Auditions: Be prepared to perform the following styles (with fills at appropriate times; 4 bars, 8 bars, etc.) by yourself during the group setting: Swing, Rock, Latin and Brushes. Upon request, be able to show versatility by effectively switching between styles in the same performance excerpt. Scroll below to find the audition excerpts for each instrument: Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Bari Sax, Trumpet (Lead on Same Excerpt) Trombone, Guitar, Piano, Drum Set.
