This book approaches its topic in a sort of post-historical fashion. It attempts to go beyond all the traditional things one might say about the Greek tradition, with the result that, in the end, it says fairly little about the art itself. If you are looking for a discussion of how mimetic and ideal emphases can actually be seen in the style and techniques of the art, you may be disappointed. I have gradually come to the conclusion that this series of books on art really don't have that much to say about paintings, sculptures, friezes, and what we can see in them.
