IoT: Some of the Challenges Huge amount Data Complexity: environment, a lot of networks, a lot of data Interoperability Lot of Connectivity options Fragmentation: proliferation of proprietary solutions Authentication, Security and Privacy Understanding the data Lot of devices/sensors Several industries need to learn a lot of new skills Regulations 7

Mobile IoT Initiative: Accelerating Availability of LPWA Mobile IoT refers to 3GPP standardised secure operator managed IoT Networks for low power wide area network Mobile IoT Initiative was set up in Aug 2015 dedicated to accelerating the availability of 3GPP standard LPWA solutions in licensed spectrum. The Focus for 2017 are the commercial launches of Mobile IoT Technologies 8

Mobile IoT Membership Snapshot 9 Over 60 GSMA Members

Why are the LPWA 3GPP Technologies? LTE-M NB-IoT Long Term Evolution for Machine Narrow-band IoT 10

11

The Key features of Mobile IoT Technologies Better Coverage 02 Low Cost Module 01 Long Battery Life 03 Low Data Needs 04 2-way communication 05 12

Key Benefit of a standard solution in licensed spectrum Standard - available to everybody 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Interoperability High authentication and security Scalability High Quality of Service, less interference, better network control Global coverage with Roaming Leverage the existing infrastructure 8 Service Level Agreement 13

Emerging Markets for LPWA SMART CITY LOGISTICS INDUSTRIAL UTILITIES SMART BUILINGS CONSUMER & MEDICAL AGRICULTURE & ENVIRONMENT 14

Utilities New LPWA connectivity provides a less expensive and less complex means of connecting water meters than earlier technologies. By extending the battery life of meters, LPWA can enable a utility to increase the time between servicing. Lengthening the service cycle from 2-3 years to 10-15 years would dramatically improve the utility s return on investment. Water Meters will show reduction in water use, potentially reducing the need for new reservoirs and they will provide information about leaks on customer premises. 18

Key characteristics which is the right compromise? Automotive CCTV Health Wearables Environmental / Agriculture Water/gas meters Speed, Throughput, Cost/Complexity, Power Consumption Coverage 20

How do make a decision? Where will I deploy? Indoor/ Outdoor? What level of security do I need? Things to consider when selecting LPWA technologies Single/bidirectional communication? Fixed/moving devices? Switching ability? 21
