Intrductin Writing a dissertatin r thesis is a time-cnsuming but supremely rewarding experience. T guide yu thrugh manuscript preparatin and t help yu create a unifrm and visually clear dcument, the Graduate Schl has develped the Dissertatin and Thesis Handbk. It is a guide t Temple University's specific style requirements, which must be fllwed t receive apprval frm the Graduate Schl. Temple University requires that yur research be made accessible t the academic cmmunity at large. This is effected by publishing yur dissertatin/thesis thrugh PrQuest and making it available thrugh bth PrQuest and Paley Library. Further, yur dissertatin/thesis may be accessed via varius internet search engines, such as Ggle. Making yur research accessible t the academic cmmunity at large is a cnditin f Temple University's awarding research dctrates and master's degrees t thse cmpleting a degree that requires a dissertatin/thesis as a culminating experience. Upn request, the Graduate Schl can embarg yur dissertatin fr ne year. A ne-year embarg is typically granted t: Delay disclsure f ptentially patentable discveries and/r prducts with ptential cmmercializatin. Permit technlgy transfer t ccur. Allw time fr an article t be accepted fr publicatin and/r a bk cntract t be executed. Style Manual An essential reference tl when writing a dissertatin r thesis is a department-apprved prfessinal style manual. Yu must cnsult a style manual recgnized by a prfessinal sciety in yur field. T determine which prfessinal style manual is apprpriate fr yur discipline, cnsult with yur advisr. Cmmn manuals include thse published by the American Psychlgical Assciatin (APA), the Mdern Language Assciatin (MLA), and the University f Chicag Press. These and ther apprved style manuals are listed in Appendix A f the Dissertatin and Thesis Handbk. Nte that the Dissertatin and Thesis Handbk is NOT itself a prfessinal style manual. Rather, it is a guide utlining where yur dissertatin/thesis might diverge frm a discipline's specificatins. If a discrepancy between the instructins in a style manual and thse in the Dissertatin and Thesis Handbk exists, the Dissertatin and Thesis Handbk takes precedence. Other Surces f Assistance The Temple University Cmputer Services Department ffers training seminars thrughut the year in using wrd prcessing and statistical tls fr yur dissertatin r thesis. These seminars prvide the building blcks fr crafting yur manuscript. Technical "Hw d I?" questins shuld be addressed t the Cmputer Services Help Desk at 215-204-8000 r help@temple.edu. Anther useful resurce is Lynda.cm, which ffers wrd prcessing tutrials. In additin, the Writing Center ffers writing retreats that are designed t help graduate students with their writing prjects, including dissertatins, prpsals, and articles fr publicatin. These writing retreats ffer 1

intensive and fcused writing time, ne-n-ne mentring, gal-setting supprt, fellwship, and mtivatin. A nminal fee is charged fr each retreat t cver prgram csts. Finally, the Temple University Libraries ffer wrkshps n publishing and cpyrighting specifically fr graduate students wh are wrking n their dissertatin r thesis. Librarians are als available fr ne-nne cnsultatins. If questins arise while wrking n yur dissertatin r thesis that are nt answered in the Dissertatin and Thesis Handbk, cntact Christa Vila, Crdinatr f Graduate Student Services, in the Graduate Schl at 215-204-6924 r cvila@temple.edu. 2

General Overview Visit the Dissertatin and Thesis Handbk early and ften during the writing prcess. D nt wait t review the Dissertatin and Thesis Handbk until the term yu anticipate graduating r when yu have already scheduled a defense date. It is NOT recmmended that yu print a cpy f the Dissertatin and Thesis Handbk. The infrmatin cntained herein is subject t change withut ntice. This manual lays ut Temple University's requirements fr acceptable dissertatins and theses. Individual departments r their schls/clleges may have additinal requirements. It is yur respnsibility t learn f such special requirements and t prepare yur manuscript in accrdance with them, as well as with the instructins in this manual. Dissertatins and theses nt meeting the specificatins f the Graduate Schl will nt be accepted. Mechanics The schlarly research yu have perfrmed and reprt n in yur final manuscript is utside the scpe f the Dissertatin and Thesis Handbk. The Graduate Schl expects that yur research has been reviewed and apprved by yur advisr and cmmittee befre allwing yu t defend yur dissertatin/thesis r uplad a final dcument. Yur dissertatin/thesis must be legible, and all tables, figures, and illustratins must be f high quality. Yur manuscript must be written in clear, grammatically crrect language; free f all spelling and typgraphical errrs; and punctuated in a standard and apprpriate manner. It is best t NOT reference and mdel yur manuscript after cmpleted dissertatins/theses n file in yur department r Paley Library, n matter hw recent. Current standards and requirements are subject t change withut ntice. 3

E-Dissertatin Initiative Dctral dissertatin submissins evlved frm paper t electrnic submissin f a PDF with the August 2008 graduatin cycle. Submissins f master's theses fllwed suit with the May 2010 graduatin cycle. Thus, submissin f all dissertatins and theses is mandatry thrugh Temple University's ETD Administratr site. Beginning with the January 2012 graduatin cycle, the diplma and publishing fees were eliminated. Accunt Access Visit Temple University's ETD Administratr site at http://www.etdadmin.cm/temple/ and bkmark fr ease f repeated access. Create an accunt and familiarize yurself with the resurces available n the site. Reminders The prcessing fee fr dctral dissertatins and master's theses is currently $50 and must be paid t the Bursar fr psting t FOAPAL 100000 24800 4981 04. It is recmmended that dctral and master's students take the Dissertatin/Thesis Prcessing Fee frm, fund under Student Tls n TUprtal within University Frms at bttm center, t the Bursar's Office when paying the fee. If yu chse t file fr cpyright thrugh PrQuest, the fee is currently $55, whether dctral r master's. It is payable nline thrugh the ETD system. Imprtant Nte Once the Graduate Schl has apprved a dissertatin r thesis submitted thrugh the ETD system, REVISIONS f any kind are NOT PERMITTED. Retain a cpy f the final versin f yur dissertatin/thesis, including signature page and permissins. PrQuest checks every page and frequently finds sme pages missing r areas f ptential cpyright infringement. 4

Basic Manuscript Preparatin Margins Margins are cnsistently set at 1.5" at LEFT and 1" at RIGHT, TOP, and BOTTOM. Margin requirements are the same fr the entire manuscript, including frnt matter, bdy, ntes, surces, and back matter. Page numbers shuld NOT be set in the margin. Page Numbering Every page f the manuscript is cunted, BUT nt all pages are numbered (e.g., the Title Page is page i, but des nt shw a page number). Tw page-numbering systems are used, including: Cnsecutive lwer-case Rman numerals (e.g., ii, iii, iv, v) fr the frnt matter beginning with i. Cnsecutive Arabic numbers (e.g., 2, 3, 4, 5) fr the text and all pages thereafter, beginning with 1 fr the first page f Chapter 1. Pages numbered 1a, 1b, and the like are NOT acceptable. Page numbers may nt be clser than 1" t the edge f any page. Headings Headings differ in appearance based n level f imprtance, but all headings f the same level must lk the same. See the sample Table f Cntents in Appendix C. Tw frmats fr headings are accepted by the Graduate Schl: The first is based n APA guidelines, as shwn in Appendix D1. This style f heading can be used regardless f yur discipline r style guide. The secnd cnsists f designating subheadings with numerical prefixes that reflect the chapter and level f the subheading. This system may be used nly by thse in the "hard sciences," such as Engineering and Statistics, as shwn in Appendix D2. Only majr divisin headings (i.e., Level 1) are ttally capitalized. The sectins f the frnt matter, each chapter, and the surces sectin are all majr divisins and begin n a new page. End the previus page with a page break t create a new page fr the next majr divisin. 7

Frmatting f headings must be cnsistently crrect thrughut the entire wrk, nt just in ne chapter. This includes but is nt limited t: Spacing between headings and text. Spacing between text and headings. Placement f same level headings (e.g., centered r flush left). Appearance f same level headings (e.g., capitalizatin, italics). Line Spacing Duble spacing is used fr the: Abstract Dedicatin Acknwledgments Preface Bdy f the manuscript Single spacing is used fr blck qutatins, which are indented 1/2" frm bth the left and right margins. A cmbinatin f single and duble spacing is used fr: Table f Cntents and Lists f Tables/Figures/Illustratins: Single-space within subheadings and titles f tw r mre lines; duble-space between individual subheadings and titles. Align multiple-line subheadings and titles under the first wrd f the first line. Ntes: Fr numbered entries (as ppsed t parenthetical entries in APA style), singlespace within entries, and duble-space between entries. Each first line must be indented 1/2". If an entry must split acrss pages, ensure a minimum f tw lines f the entry appears n bth pages. Bibligraphy/References Cited: Single-space within entries, and duble-space between entries r duble-space within and between entries. The first line begins at the left margin, and all subsequent turnver lines indent 1/2" r the first line is indented 1/2", and all subsequent turnver lines align at the left margin. If an entry must split acrss pages, ensure a minimum f tw lines f the entry appears n bth pages. Space between headings and text, text and blck qutatins, blck qutatins and text, etc. must be cnsistent thrughut the manuscript. N careless spacing r centered text shuld be utilized. 8

Widws and Orphans Widws and rphans, which are single lines f text at the tp r bttm f a page, are t be avided. "Widw" is defined as the last line f a paragraph when it is carried ver t the tp f the fllwing page away frm the rest f the paragraph. "Orphan" is defined as the first line f a paragraph when it appears alne at the bttm f a page. Starting a page with the last line f a list is als a widw and must be avided. Ending a page with a subheading is anther type f rphan and must be avided. Quted Material Lng qutatins (i.e., quted material cnsisting f 40 r mre wrds) are frmatted as a freestanding blck f type and must: Be single-spaced. Be indented 1/2" frm the left and right margins. Have NO surrunding qutatin marks. Have the surce citatin after the ending punctuatin f the quted material. Shrt qutatins (i.e., quted material with fewer than 40 wrds) are integrated int the text and distinguished by surrunding the qute in qutatin marks. The surce citatin is placed after the ending qutatin mark, but befre the ending punctuatin f the sentence. PDF Preparatin File Frmat Print Quality Fnts Clr Multimedia Files Adbe PDF required. NO cmpressin; NO passwrd prtectin; NO digital signature. Yu are respnsible fr the appearance f yur manuscript in PDF. It will appear and be dwnladed exactly as yu submit it. Only black ink is acceptable and the wrk must NOT cntain tuching r discntinuus characters. Embedded Pst Script Type 1 fnts REQUIRED. Any legible fnt except script, italic, r rnamental fnts equivalent in scale t 10-pint Arial r 12-pint Times New Rman accepted. Italicized fnt may be used fr nn-english wrds and qutatins. Applies t all text, including captins, ftntes/endntes, citatins, etc. PDF and print reprductins include all clr material in clr. Fr digital preservatin, uplad multimedia cntent as supplemental files; d nt embed multimedia in a PDF. Uplad supplementary files during nline submissin and prvide a descriptin f each file in the Abstract f yur manuscript. PrQuest accepts multimedia cntent in the file types listed belw and cannt guarantee that ther file types will be migrated: Audi: AIF (.aif); CD-DA; CD-ROM/XA; MIDI (.midi); MPEG-2; SND (.snd); WAV (.wav) Images: GIF (.gif); JPEG (.jpeg); TIFF (.tif) Vide: Apple Quick Time (.mv); Micrsft Audi Vide Interleaved (.avi); MPEG (.mgp) 9

Arrangement f Cntents Every dissertatin and thesis has three main parts: frnt matter, bdy, and back matter. Each f the three chief parts, in turn, cnsists f multiple sectins. Frnt Matter Official Signature Page Dissertatins. The Graduate Schl requires submissin f ne Signature Page with riginal signatures f all cmmittee members. When yur defense annuncement is received and apprved, the Graduate Schl will create the Signature Page and deliver it t the Chair f yur Dctral Advisry Cmmittee. Nte that yur name must appear n yur dissertatin and all ther dcuments as it appears n yur Temple University transcript. If a name revisin is required, make the change in Self-Service Banner r cntact the Office f the University Registrar. N changes may be made t the Signature Page created by the Graduate Schl. Use f Wite-Out, crssuts, tape, r the like t make revisins t the page render the Signature Page null and vid. Fllwing yur defense, the hard-cpy riginal must be submitted t Christa Vila, Crdinatr f Graduate Student Services, in the Graduate Schl, 501 Carnell Hall. The Signature Page will NOT be included as part f the dissertatin's PDF. Theses. The Graduate Schl requires submissin f ne Signature Page with the riginal signature f yur Thesis Advisr. T create the Signature Page, fllw the "script" in Appendix E t fill in the "writable" title page fund under Student Tls n TUprtal, adding a signature line beside the Thesis Advisr's department affiliatin. Fllwing yur defense, submit the hard-cpy riginal bearing yur Thesis Advisr's signature t Christa Vila, Crdinatr f Graduate Student Services, in the Graduate Schl, 501 Carnell Hall. Please nte that the Signature Page will NOT be included as part f the thesis's PDF. E-Title Page Dissertatins. The E-Title Page is similar t the fficial Signature Page with three alteratins: Yu generate the E-Title Page. Typed names replace signatures f the cmmittee members. The E-Title Page is upladed as part f yur PDF. Theses. The E-Title Page is similar t the fficial Signature Page except: It bears n signature, nly typed names with titles and affiliatins. It is upladed as part f yur PDF. 10

Design Instructins. Access and fill in the Dissertatin r Thesis E-Title Page, as relevant. Fllw the script versin in Appendix F fr dissertatins r Appendix E fr theses t ensure prper frmatting and styling, such as bld and caps, n the writable versins f the title pages fund under Student Tls n TUprtal. Use wrd substitutes fr frmulae, symbls, superscripts, Greek letters, etc. in the title. While these are acceptable within the text f yur manuscript, they may nt appear in the title because they cannt be used in cmputerized keywrd searches. Indicate the mnth and year f the fficial University diplma date nt f yur defense and nt f yur schl/cllege ceremny. The ONLY ptins are December, May, r August. Cpyright Page The Cpyright Page is ptinal and included nly if the cpyright fee is paid. When included, the Cpyright Page is the first page n which a page number actually appears. It is numbered with a small Rman numeral tw (ii). If included, the ntificatin n the page is centered tp t bttm and left t right and shuld read: Cpyright Year f Graduatin (e.g., 2015) by Authr's Legal Name All Rights Reserved A template fr the Cpyright Page is included in Appendix G. Abstract The Abstract, which has n set wrd limit but is an "abstract," shuld briefly: State the prblem discussed in the manuscript. Describe the research prcedures r methdlgy. Summarize majr findings and cnclusins. The Abstract is text nly and may NOT cntain any ther element, such as tables, graphs, charts, illustratins, subheadings, r reference ntes. The Abstract is duble-spaced. 11

Page numbers cntinue Rman numeral paginatin f the frnt matter. A template fr the Abstract is included in Appendix G. Dedicatin and/r Acknwledgments The Dedicatin and Acknwledgments pages are bth ptinal. If ne r bth pages is included, duble spacing is used. Page numbers cntinue Rman numeral paginatin f the frnt matter. Templates fr the Dedicatin and Acknwledgments pages are included in Appendix G. Table f Cntents "Table f Cntents" is a majr heading and shuld be set in that frmat. Belw that, at the right margin, is the clumn label "Page." Next, at the left margin, the sectins in the manuscript are listed. Leader dts fllw, with respective page numbers listed under the "Page" clumn header. A template fr the Table f Cntents is included in Appendix G. Frnt matter headings, including ABSTRACT, DEDICATION, ACKNOWLEDGMENTS, LIST OF TABLES, LIST OF FIGURES, and/r LIST OF ILLUSTRATIONS, are listed in the Table f Cntents in all capital letters, at the left margin, if these sectins exist in yur manuscript. In the Table f Cntents, d NOT include a line entry fr the Cpyright Page r Table f Cntents itself. Belw the frnt matter entries, still at far left, is the clumn label "CHAPTER." Under that, Arabic chapter numbers and chapter titles in all capital letters are listed. It is nt required that subheadings be listed in the Table f Cntents, but if they are, each level f subheading is indented 1/2" frm the chapter title r subheading abve. D nt list mre than three levels f subheading n the Table f Cntents and if yu list a level f heading fr ne chapter, list that level fr every chapter in which it exists. Remember, this applies t the Table f Cntents, nt the text. Chapter numbers (e.g., 1, 2, 3) shuld be unifrmly spaced frm chapter titles. Chapter titles and subheadings shuld be unifrmly separated frm page numbers. Thus, if a title cmes within 1/2" f its page number, break it int tw r mre single-spaced lines, aligning turnver lines with the first wrd f the title/subheading. Back matter headings, including BIBLIOGRAPHY/REFERENCES CITED and APPENDICES, are listed in the Table f Cntents in all capital letters and at the left margin. If there is mre than ne APPENDIX, each is identified by a capital letter (e.g., A, B, C) assigned accrding t the rder f mentin in the text and aligned at the left margin. D nt repeat the clumn labels f "Page" and/r "CHAPTER" n subsequent pages f the Table f Cntents. Page numbers fr the Table f Cntents cntinue Rman numeral paginatin f the frnt matter. 12

List f Tables/Figures/Illustratins Separate lists are necessary if there are tables, figures, and/r illustratins in yur manuscript. Depending n the items in yur manuscript, yu may have a List f Tables, a List f Figures, and a List f Illustratins r yu may have just ne r tw. Identify the materials in yur dissertatin/thesis and srt them int the apprpriate list. The titles/captins listed in each list must match exactly the titles/captins in the manuscript. This includes wrding, capitalizatin, abbreviatins, punctuatin, and the like. Hwever, d nt cpy underlining (except in the case f statistical abbreviatins) r bld t a list. The purpse f these lists is t allw the reader t lcate easily the embedded table, figure, r illustratin rather than have t page thrugh the entire dcument. "Table," "Figure," r "Illustratin" must appear as the left clumn label in its respective list. At right is the clumn label "Page." Belw, the number and its crrespnding title r captin appears. Each entry's crrespnding page number is right-aligned, with leader dts separating title/captin frm page number. If the list breaks nt multiple pages, d nt repeat the clumn labels. If a title/captin cmes within 1/2" f its page number, break it int tw r mre single-spaced lines that align under the first wrd f the title/captin. Each title/captin is duble-spaced, except when single spacing is used fr turnver lines f lng titles/captins. Page numbers fr Lists cntinue Rman numeral paginatin f the frnt matter. Templates fr the Lists are included in Appendix G. Bdy Chapter Numbers and Titles Text "CHAPTER #" and "CHAPTER TITLE" are nrmally all caps and centered at the tp f a new page. Arabic numbers nt wrds, nt Rman numerals designate chapter numbers. Line spacing shuld be cnsistent spacing, whether single r duble. Other placements and capitalizatin schemes may be accepted. The key is t be cnsistent n all headings with the same level f imprtance. This is the substance f the dissertatin/thesis. It includes all chapters and their sectins and subsectins, with a crrespnding page number in the Table f Cntents. Page numbers begin with an Arabic number 1 fr the first page f Chapter 1 and cntinue cnsecutively. A sample first page f a chapter is shwn in Appendix H, while a Chapter template is included in Appendix I. 13

Ntes Ntes may be substantive r explanatry. Ntes may identify surces r indicate keys t reading a table. Depending n yur style manual and the purpse f the ntes, they may be called ftntes, endntes, ntes, general ntes, prbability ntes, etc. Regardless f what yur ntes are called, each entry must have the same frmat: Single- r duble-spaced within ntes. Duble spacing between ntes. Same fnt as the rest f the text. Ideally, same pint size as the rest f the text. Under n circumstances, smaller than 10 pint. Back Matter Bibligraphy/References Cited A cmprehensive list f surces must be titled either "Bibligraphy" r "References Cited." A template fr the surce list is included in Appendix J. All bks, articles, r ther surces used in the manuscript, either in direct qutatin r by reference, must be listed. Citatins in the text must crrespnd t thse listed in the cmprehensive surce list. Authrs' names must be spelled crrectly and, hence, cnsistently. Dates that appear in the text shuld be the same as thse listed in the cmprehensive surce list. In-text citatins, surce citatins, references, and ntes may be ONE f the fllwing: Parenthetical authr-date, as in the example in the table at the tp f the next page. Superscripted r bracketed numbers. Classic ftntes at the bttm f the page. Endntes at the end f each chapter. Endntes at the end f the entire wrk. 14

In text In Bibligraphy/Reference Cited EXAMPLE OF PARENTHETICAL AUTHOR-DATE APA CITATION As nted in the research (Huggard, 1998), the gal was... Huggard, C. (1998). Clinical efficacy f dexamethasne intphresis in the treatment f patellar tendnitis in cllegiate athletics: A duble-blind study. Unpublished master's thesis, Temple University. Philadelphia, PA. Ordering within the list f surces varies by discipline: Wrks in educatin, the humanities, and the scial sciences are alphabetically rdered by authr's family name, which begins each entry. Wrks in the hard sciences are usually rdered numerically. Tw spacing ptins exist: Single-space within individual entries and duble-space between. Duble-space within and between entries. Tw indentatin ptins exist: With hanging indentatin, the first line f every entry is n the left margin and every turnver line is indented 1/2". With paragraph indentatin, the first line is indented 1/2" frm the left margin and the turnver lines are at the left margin. Page numbers cntinue cnsecutive Arabic paginatin f the text. Appendices Appendices cntain supplementary material r explanatry data t lengthy t be included in the text r nt immediately essential t the reader's understanding f the text. T determine whether t include material as an Appendix, cnsider: Des the material truly need t be included? That is, des it add t the understanding f yur research? Is the authr's written permissin needed t include it? That is, is it cpyrighted? Des it fit Temple University's margin, clarity, and type requirements r d yu have t retype it? Fr example, letterhead cannt be included withut adjustment. Have yu made reference t the material in the text? N material can be included as an Appendix if it is nt referred t in the text. Appendixes are designated by capital letters (e.g., A, B, C); are lettered in the rder in which they are mentined in the text; and are listed in the Table f Cntents as Level 1 headings, fully 15

CAPITALIZED with their Appendix letter n the left margin directly under the "A" in Appendix. See the sample Table f Cntents in Appendix C. Each Appendix is titled with a centered Level 1 heading "APPENDIX " fllwed n the next line by its title in ALL CAPITAL letters. These are psitined at the tp f the first page f each new Appendix like a Chapter title. Original material in an Appendix must be duble-spaced and typed the same as all ther text. Cpies f crrespndence, frms, cmputer prgrams, printed questinnaires, surveys, testing instruments, etc. may be included in their riginal frmat ONLY if they adhere t the established margins (i.e., 1.5" n the left side and 1" n all ther sides), print size, and quality specificatins. It is nt imprtant that the "riginal" dcument be included, but it is imprtant that included dcuments be readable. Material that will nt fit r is difficult t read must be reduced, recpied, retyped, r remved. Letterhead must be either cut-and-pasted r retyped. Appendices fllw the Bibligraphy/References Cited sectin. Page numbers cntinue cnsecutive Arabic paginatin f the text. This applies t bth new and previusly paginated materials that yu include. A template fr Appendices is included in Appendix K. 16

Preparatin f List Materials Graphic elements that can be utilized in dissertatins and theses include: Tables, which rganize infrmatin int discrete rws and clumns. Figures, which are ther illustrative material, including charts, graphs, diagrams, schematic illustratins, and the like. Drawings and phtgraphs can be included, if desired. Illustratins, which are typically drawings and phtgraphs. General Style f List Materials Fnt and fnt size shuld be cnsistent between tables/figures/illustratins and the text unless there is a cmpelling reasn t d therwise. Every table, figure, and illustratin must be unique and have its wn unique title. That is, each item may appear nly nce in yur manuscript. Tables, figures, and illustratins are integrated int the text: An element that is larger than half a page shuld be placed n a page by itself centered within the margins n the first page fllwing its first mentin in the text. An element that is half a page r smaller shuld be merged nt a page with text and set ff frm the text by a duble r triple space abve and belw. Each element must appear in its entirety n ne page, if it will fit. If it will nt, it shuld begin at the tp f a page and cntinue n succeeding pages as necessary. D nt leave substantial blank space n a page because a graphic element has been mentined and will be placed n the fllwing page. Cntinue the text t the bttm f the page, and then insert the table/figure/illustratin at the tp f the next page, and resume the text n that page after the graphic element. Number tables/figures/illustratins sequentially with Arabic numbers thrughut the manuscript (i.e., 1, 2, 3) accrding t the rder in which they appear in yur text. Begin numbering each different type f graphic element at 1. Thus, yu culd have a Table 1, Figure 1, and Illustratin 1 in yur manuscript. The nly acceptable alternate numbering system is t use bth the chapter number and the number f the graphic element tgether (e.g., "Table 3-6" [r 3.6] fr the sixth table in the third chapter, "Figure 5-2" [r 5.2] fr the secnd figure in Chapter 5). Whichever numbering system yu chse fr the text must be reflected in the respective LIST in the frnt matter. That is, if yu chse t include the chapter number in yur numbering system, the "chapter number-graphic element number" must appear in the list. 17

Graphic elements may NOT be numbered accrding t sectin. Graphic elements may nt be differentiated with letter suffixes (e.g., Table 6A, Table 6B, etc.) t indicate a relatin between tw r mre graphics. If the tables/figures/illustratins are related, then they can be cmbined int ne. Any graphic element set up in landscape rientatin shuld be n a page by itself. Landscaped materials must be placed reading utward (i.e., with the tp f the graphic at the binding r left side f the page). The page number n the landscaped page must, hwever, have prtrait rientatin like all ther page numbers. Cnsistency in style, placement, numbering, spacing, and punctuatin used fr the graphic elements in yur manuscript is key. Tables Data that wuld require nly tw r fewer clumns and rws in tabular frm shuld be presented in the text because tables are reserved fr mre cmplex data. T present quantitative data clearly and efficiently, it must be arranged lgically: Data t be cmpared must be presented next t ne anther. Statistical infrmatin (means, standard deviatins, N values) must be presented in separate parts f the table. If pssible, cannical frms (ANOVA, regressin, crrelatin) shuld be used. The "Table" feature in yur sftware shuld be utilized t create tables. If yu chse t nt use the "Table" feature, clumns shuld be aligned using tabs, nt the space bar and yur eye. Initial caps, italics, and single spacing are used fr the table title. Align the secnd line f the title directly under the first wrd f the title. Clumn headings within the table shuld be clear and cncise. They shuld nt be much wider than the widest entry in the clumn. All clumns must have a heading, even the "stub" clumn, which custmarily lists the majr independent variables in the left-hand clumn. Numerical data shuld be expressed in a cnsistent number f decimal places, as determined by the precisin f measurement, within a clumn. D nt vary the unit f measurement r the number f decimal places in the same clumn. 18

If a table splits acrss pages, n the cntinuatin page(s): Duplicate the table number, but replace the title with "(cntinued)". Repeat the clumn headers. Cnsistent spacing shuld be maintained between the text and the table title and between the end f the table and the text. Tw line spaces abve and belw are recmmended. Example f the basic structure f a table in APA style 6th editin: An lder style table is acceptable fr sme disciplines at Temple University, as shwn in the example belw. It utilizes: Spanner lines, which include a slid hrizntal line at the tp f the table (a single space belw the title); a slid hrizntal line belw the clumn headings; and a slid hrizntal line at the end f the table (a single space abve any ntes r a triple space abve text). If the table cntinues t anther page, n spanner line appears at the bttm f the cntinuing page(s). A perid, which fllws the table number. The table title is set n the same line as the table number and has n punctuatin after it. 19

A crrespnding LIST OF TABLES must appear in the frnt matter, shwing the table number, its title exactly as it is typed n the table itself, leader dts, and the number f the page n which the table appears in yur manuscript. Tables that appear in an Appendix must be frmatted exactly like thse in the text and must be listed in the LIST OF TABLES in the frnt matter. Tables in the Appendix shuld be numbered in the same style used in the text (i.e., either sequential r with bth the Appendix letter-table number). Figures A "captin" is a descriptive title r brief explanatin f a figure. It is mandatry and appears BELOW the figure. The captin is duplicated in the LIST OF FIGURES in the frnt matter. A "legend" is any additinal cmmentary r a mre detailed explanatin f the figure. It is ptinal, fllws the captin, and is NOT incrprated int the LIST OF FIGURES. Example f a figure: Figure 1. Lg. One f Temple University's lgs circa 2005. D NOT add alpha extensins t a figure's Arabic number t indicate related figures, even if yur discipline's style manual calls fr such. Cnsistency in capitalizatin in captins and legends is key. With tday's cmputer technlgy, hand-drawn figures shuld be the exceptin, nt the rule. If yu are drawing a figure by hand, straight lines must be typed r drawn in black ink with a ruler; wrds included in the figure shuld be typed. Cmputer-generated figures are acceptable if the print is f letter quality and large enugh t be readable (at least 10-pint type). A crrespnding LIST OF FIGURES must appear in the frnt matter, shwing the figure number, its captin exactly as it is typed belw the figure itself, leader dts, and the number f the page n which the figure appears in yur manuscript. Illustratins Drawings and phtgraphs can be listed in a LIST OF ILLUSTRATIONS; included in the LIST OF FIGURES; r identified in a LIST OF PLATES r, if relevant, a LIST OF PHOTOGRAPHS. Like tables and ther figures, identificatin in a LIST includes the illustratin number, its captin exactly as it is typed belw the illustratin itself, leader dts, and the number f the page n which the illustratin appears in yur manuscript. Cnsistency in capitalizatin is key. 20

Publishing and Cpyrighting Publishing Yur Dissertatin/Thesis Thrugh PrQuest "Publishing" is the gal f the nline e-dissertatin submissin prcess: Yu uplad yur dissertatin/thesis at http://www.etdadmin.cm/temple/, Temple University's ETD Administratr site. The Graduate Schl apprves and releases the upladed PDF t PrQuest, cntingent upn receipt f an executed Permissin t Reprduce Dissertatin r Thesis frm, which is fund under Student Tls n TUprtal within University Frms at bttm center. The PDF f yur dissertatin/thesis is simultaneusly delivered t Paley Library. Again... Summary Cnsideratins Dissertatin/Thesis Preparatin Was the style manual fr yur discipline yur best friend during the writing prcess? Whether APA, Chicag, MLA, r sme ther style, the manual shuld have been used t frmat yur in-text references and entries fr the surces sectin. Nte, hwever, that spacing and subheading cnventins as utlined in the Dissertatin and Thesis Handbk take precedence ver thse f any style guide. Thrughut the entire manuscript and in all sectins, the MARGINS must be 1.5" n the LEFT and 1" n the tp, bttm, and right. Everything, including page numbers, must be within these margins. The TABLE OF CONTENTS must accurately reflect heading levels and their exact wrding and capitalizatin frm the text. The TABLE OF CONTENTS and any LISTS must have leader dts with the sectin's page number set at the right-hand end f the dts. The page numbers will readily align if a right tab is set at 6". FRONT MATTER must be in this rder, when included: Cpyright, Abstract, Dedicatin, Acknwledgments, Table f Cntents, Lists. All f these pages are listed n the Table f Cntents alng with their page number, except the Cpyright Page and Table f Cntents. Running heads (i.e., headers repeated n cnsecutive pages) are NOT permitted. CHAPTERS are necessary, and each chapter begins a new page. Chapter 1 always begins n page 1. A COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF SOURCES, such as "Bibligraphy" r "References Cited," must be included after the last chapter. Its frmat will vary by discipline. All CITATIONS mentined in the text must have a full bibligraphic entry in the cmprehensive list f surces. Irretrievable data, such as an ral interview, are excluded. If yu are ready t submit yur manuscript, have yu reviewed it as a whle? N discernible difference shuld exist between the part that cnstituted yur prpsal a few years ag and the cnclusin yu wrte this mrning. Yur dissertatin r thesis is a single wrk that is brken int chapters that shuld chesively cntribute t the premise f yur dcument. Academics Dctral students must cmplete a minimum f 6 culminating credits f 9994, 9998, and 9999 with a minimum f 2 credits in 9999 AFTER achieving candidacy and BEFORE graduatin. Registratin is required in the academic term f defense/submissin, whether Fall, Spring, r Summer, fr bth dctral and master's students. 23

Graduatin When the end is in sight, ensure that yu have applied fr graduatin. When in SSB, select Student» Student Recrds» Apply t Graduate. Upn accessing the graduatin applicatin, verify that the crrect degree and prgram are indicated. If the wrng degree r prgram is listed, STOP. This will be required if yu are applying fr a diplma fr a degree t which yu were nt fficially admitted (e.g., admitted t the Ph.D. but picking up an M.A. alng the way). Cntact yur advisr t submit a Graduate Change f Prgram Wrk Flw. When the Registrar cnfirms via email that the Change f Prgram has been cmpleted, return t the SSB graduatin applicatin and submit. Nte that individual schls and clleges may have additinal filing requirements. Check with yur dean's ffice t ensure that all graduatin requirements have been satisfied and t learn abut graduatin prcedures, such as fees, regalia, invitatins, and "walking." Remember that the dissertatin/thesis prcessing fee is required. This $50 fee must be paid thrugh the Bursar and applied t FOAPAL 100000 24800 4981 04; it cannt be paid nline. A Treasurer's Receipt must then be presented t the schl/cllege as prf f payment f the dissertatin/thesis prcessing fee. 24

Graduate Schl Draft Review Reviews f drafts and final cpies are limited t versight f frmatting t ensure that all dissertatins and theses meet standards generally expected in an academic manuscript f such magnitude. An appintment can be scheduled with Christa Vila, Crdinatr f Graduate Student Services, at 215-204-6924 r cvila@temple.edu. Manuscript review by the Graduate Schl fcuses n the items identified belw. Appendix B1: Survey f Earned Dctrates WEB REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS SURVEY OF EARNED DOCTORATES (SED) WEB REGISTRATION Cngratulatins n cmpleting yur dctrate! The Survey f Earned Dctrates is the definitive surce f infrmatin n the natin s new research dctrates. Spnsred by the Natinal Science Fundatin and five ther Federal agencies, the SED is critical t understanding in what specialty areas dctrates are prduced and their pst-graduatin emplyment plans. Results are used by gvernment and academic institutins t make decisins abut graduate educatin funding, develping new prgrams, and supprting existing nes. The ability f the survey t accurately describe dctrate earners depends n btaining respnses frm all dctral degree recipients. Yur respnse affects decisins made fr future generatins f dctrate recipients. The SED nline registratin prcess allws students t g directly t the SED survey withut having t retrieve a PIN/Passwrd frm their email. The result is expediency in cmpleting the survey. A PIN/Passwrd and URL t the survey are prvided nly when the student has had t exit the survey befre its cmpletin.
