Zest for Living and Learning We offer our customers the opportunity to acquire information and positive experiences. Our services enhance people s interest in literature, reading and music, help them in lifelong learning and in the use of information networks. Our aim is to support people s mental growth and well-being.
Poetry and Prose The Library makes possible all kinds of trips into the world of books by offering publications on current topics, as well as treasures from the storage collection. We present and recommend books to patrons and different groups. The Library organizes reading circles run by the staff where patrons may deepen their reading experience by general discussion. Vellamo s hints introduce you to the culture of Päijät-Häme In the Web and as Part of the Web The LASTU Web Library Catalogue and other digital services can be used around the clock. Items on loan, as well as items on the shelves, may be reserved. The requested material is then sent to the Lahti City library location of your choice. The public workstations in the Library are available to anyone for seeking information or using digital services. Electronic journals supplement the collection of printed newspapers in the Library. Almost a hundred Finnish and a thousand international electronic newspapers are available on library workstations. Vellamo s hints, a web service of ours, presents the culture of the Päijät-Häme region and helps in finding local information. Our library is the Regional Library of Päijät-Häme. We support the libraries of the region in their reference service, collect material dealing with this region, spread information, organize education and provide interlibrary loan service to other libraries.
Children s Own Library We offer children a versatile collection of fairy tales, stories, magazines, films, games and music. The comfortable spaces in the libraries tempt children and teens to browse through and borrow books or just look around the place. Story times, puppet theatre and other performances open new paths for imagination. We actively cooperate with schools and day care centres. We collect books and other material on different topics for different age groups. We instruct school classes in library use and give book talks. The Mobile Library provides regular library services to day care centres and schools. We ll be pleased to come to talk about the importance of reading at parents evenings in day care centres and in children s play groups. Great adventures for little people
In the Library you can be yourself Youth Allowed The Youth Space is a gateway to the Library and the possibilities it can offer to young people. In the Youth Space teens can find interesting books, comics, magazines, films and music. In this space we also organize events and theme weeks that teenagers have suggested in cooperation with the City Youth Services and others.
The Mobile Library comes to the customer For Seniors and Other Groups Through the Library s book delivery service the world of books is also available to those inhabitants of Lahti who cannot visit a library themselves because of an illness or a physical disability. The Mobile Library comes to the patrons and also provides service to seniors and other special groups. We organize free introductory courses for seniors and other groups on how to use a computer and the Internet. In these courses the participants are taught how to use a computer and the web services provided by the Library and how to use digital services in general.
Ask and Find In the Library you may look around on your own and make pleasant discoveries. But you cannot always find everything by yourself. The staff is ready to help you find books and other material, as well as any kind of information you may need. Ask a Librarian is a Web service that allows anyone to send a question to a library in Finland and get an answer in three days. Borrow a Librarian is a service for those who would like to reserve time for personal, unhurried guidance or information search sessions. The starting point for finding individual books and even for doing a more extensive search is our LASTU Library Catalogue. It can be found on the Net and can be used freely by anyone. It is further complemented by databases on different topics. Some of these databases are free, others have been subscribed to by the Library can only be used on Library computers. Through interlibrary loan service patrons can request items that are not owned by the Lahti City Library. Musical Library We ll find music for different occasions The world of music takes various forms in the Library. In the Music Department listening rooms you can listen to CDs or watch DVDs, and in the piano studios it is possible to play or sing. You may read music magazines and borrow records, playing guides and printed music. We ll find the pieces of music you are looking for, and suitable music for different events. Songbooks and CDs are also available in the branch libraries and in the Mobile Library. The digital world of music is opened by the Naxos Music Library. Your library card is a free ticket to the largest art music web service in the world, bringing music to your own computer.
Spaces and Events In the Library you can study, spend time pleasantly and meet friends Comfortable library spaces in different parts of the town are open to all people of all ages for reading, borrowing material, seeking information, studying, or just spending time in a pleasant way and meeting friends. Through different exhibitions we are able to showcase various subjects in the Library collection. We also offer exhibition space in the Main Library and the branches for Lahti citizens and organizations. Patrons are offered author visits, lectures and music events. We introduce library services to groups visiting the Library and participate in various events. An auditorium, a meeting room and a computer room may be rented in the Library. The branch libraries, too, offer spaces that their patrons may use for local activities.
