ART ARCHITECTURE SOCIETY INAUGURAL LECTURE Monday 11 September 5.30pm OH Room This new society, run by Harrow boys with a particular interest in architecture, will present architecture-related talks throughout the academic year. The society s inaugural lecture will be given by Dr James Campbell, Director of Studies and Fellow in Architecture and History of Art, Queen s College, Cambridge. HIDDEN TALES: AN EXHIBITION OF WORK BY TERRY CHARLES AND LINDA AUSTIN Saturday 23 September to Friday 20 October Private View Friday 22 September 6.30pm Both artists work concerns hidden narratives. Terry begins with subconscious or automatic drawing. From this, he finds images that morph into animals, people and faces, which he paints as motifs reflecting situations from his own life and memories, as well as fairy tales and archetypes. Linda paints animals in disguised emotional armour, whose undetectable feelings and thoughts reference hidden situations and traumatic events in the lives of those who experience war, violence and personal tragedy. She depicts the animals in woodland and in industrial structures, the colours and forms illuminating hidden fears and an instinct for survival. ARCHITECTURE SOCIETY LECTURE Tuesday 7 November 5.30pm - OH Room Professor Spencer de Grey, Joint Head of Design at Foster and Partners, designers of iconic buildings such as the Gherkin, the headquarters of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank in Hong Kong, and the Great Court at the British Museum, will talk about the work of one of the world s most famous architecture practices. THE VAN GOGH DELUSION Thursday 9 November 5.30pm Old Speech Room Leopold Florescu (The Head Master s) will talk about some of the truths and myths surrounding one of the greatest European artists of the 19th century. OLD SPEECH ROOM GALLERY THE CODRINGTON TREASURE From Monday 11 September On loan from the current generation of his family, the sumptuous silver wares, weaponry, medals and decorations of OH Admiral Sir Edward Codrington (1770-1851) are complemented by naval scenes and portraits from the OSRG art collection. THE HB HARRIS COLLECTION OF CHINESE CERAMICS AND SCULPTURE From Monday 11 September A selection of vessels dating from the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907), collected in the early 20th century by OH Henry Blackwall Harris (Small Houses and The Head Master s, 1885³). DEFINING MEMENTOS: 3 From Friday 6 October Over 30 new members of Harrow School staff have lent personal treasures to this, the third in the OSRG s Defining Mementos series. Each object, from the minuscule to the magnificent, the prehistoric to the present, and the humorous to the heartfelt, has a story to tell. The very nature of mementos is explored and the result is a thoughtful study of how objects can affect each one of us. The OSRG is generally open to the public from 2.30pm to 5.30pm on three afternoons during the week (not weekends) in term time. It will also be open on the afternoon of Sunday 17 September. Please call 020 8872 8205 for further details. OBJECT OF THE TERM From Monday 11 September A newly acquired watercolour by OH Thomas Bonhote Wilson (High Street, 1906²) shows him as Harrow s opening batsman in the Eton v Harrow match at Lord s in 1910. An Irish Guardsman, he was killed near Ypres in July 1917. This year is the centenary of his death (Beckwith Collection OSRG 2017.21.1). THE ARTS CALENDAR Autumn 2017
