2 Editor s Notes In Aril 102, three short weeks before his Moscow wedding to Natalia Satina, Sergei Rachmaninoff wrote a series of twelve Romances for solo voice and iano, O. 21. Comosing in his beloved summer residence in Ivanovka (a modest estate south east of Moscow), the 2year old Rachmaninoff wrote to his bride: I am terribly tired, but before our wedding I must comose at least 12 romances so I can ay for the church ceremony and the honeymoon abroad. All romances of this ous are short in length, emotionally intense and laconic in text. Rachmaninoff hardly reeats words and sets them syllabically. Lilacs, similar to several other songs in the cycle, was written in the aesthetic of symbolism a late nineteenthcentury French and Russian art movement suggesting a flight of imagination or dreaming, and an unfulfilled search of hainess. The romance s gentle, flowing melody delicately reflects the words of Ekaterina Beketova s oem of the same title, almost touching it. 8 Elena Sharkova was born and raised in St. Petersburg, Russia. She earned an undergraduate degree in iano and music education, and a graduate degree in conducting from St. Petersburg RimskiKorsakov State Conservatoire. Since her arrival to the US in 13, she has held faculty ositions at Western Michigan University and served as the Director of Choral Activities at San Jose State University. A highly soughtafter clinician, guest conductor and adjudicator, Elena has worked with rofessional, community, university, and youth choirs in 17 countries. At home in San Jose, CA, she is the Artistic Director of the 300voice Cantabile Youth Singers of Silicon Valley and Symhony Silicon Valley Chorale. As a assionate advocate for Russian and Slavic music, Elena has lectured extensively on the reertoire and its erformance ractices, and has conducted several US remiers of Russian contemorary comositions.
