The Solo Years chapter 1

1.1 The Motown Years Jermaine July, 1972 Jermaine Jackson s first solo album was released in July 1972. At that time The Jackson 5 were already three years recording at Motown and had a huge amount of hits behind them. Motown decided to launch also solo careers of Jackson 5 members. They started in January 1972 with the release of Michael Jackson s first solo album Got To Be There. Jermaine s first album was released seven months later, between the albums Lookin Through The Windows and Skywriter from The Jackson 5, and in the same month Michael scored his first #1 hit record with the single Ben. As a member of The Jackson 5, Jermaine already had famous songs were he sang the lead. The ballad I Found That Girl (B-side of the #1 hit The Love You Save ) and She s Good (B-side of the #2 hit Never Can Say Goodbye ) were already recognizable songs with Jermaine s voice. Besides Jermaine and Michael, Motown released in October 1973 also a solo album of Jermaine s oldest brother Jackie Jackson. The album Jermaine became a decent hit. In the U.S. it reached #6 in the R&B chart and #27 in the Pop chart. For this album Jermaine worked with the same team of producers that also worked with The Jackson 5, which were Hal Davis, Jerry Marcellino and Mel Larson, and The Corporation. Also Johnny Bristol and G. Jones and P. Sawyer produced several tracks for the album. The Executive producer of the album was Berry Gordy. The opening track of the album is the song That s How Love Goes, which became the first solo single of Jermaine. It is said that The Jackson 5 perform the background vocals for the song, although it s not stated officially on the album cover. The album follows with the Four Tops classic I m In A Different World, Homeward Bound, Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me For A Little While), produced by Hal Davis, and I Only Have Eyes For You, which was produced by The Corporation. The B-side of the album starts with the song I Let Love Pass Me By and it follows with the up-tempo track Live It Up, which was also produced by The Corporation, If You Were My Woman, Ain t That Peculiar and Daddy s Home, another song produced by The Corporation, which was released as second single with on the B-side Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me For A Little While). 15

1.1 The Motown Years 1.1 The Motown Years Jermaine, 7 singles From the album Jermaine two singles were issued. Jermaine s first solo single was the song That s How Love Goes, which was released in July 1972 in a regular white sleeve. An interesting note is that the B-side of the single contains a song that has never been released on an album of Jermaine Jackson, called I Lost My Love In The Big City. The single became a decent hit, but it didn t match to the figures The Jackson 5 were used to. In the U.S. the single reached #23 in the R&B chart and #46 in the Pop chart. The single That s How Love Goes was also released in several European countries in various nice picture sleeves. The second solo single for Motown was the song Daddy s Home, which was released in November 1972. The song was a cover of the 1961 hit of Shep and the Limelites. On the B-Side of the single was track number four from the album Jermaine, which was the song Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me For A Little While). This single did a lot better in the U.S. charts compared to the first single. It reached #3 the R&B chart and #9 in the Pop chart. The single Daddy s Home was released in several European countries and came in various picture sleeves. A nice live version of the songs That s How Love Goes, Daddy s Home and the song Ain t That Peculiar was released on a live album of The Jackson 5 that was released in Japan only in 1973, called In Japan!. 1.1 The Motown Years Let Me Tickle Your Fancy July, 1982 In July 1982 Jermaine released his last album for Motown, before he would sign a new contract with Arista Records. All the songs on the album were partially written by Jermaine and the production of the song was done by Jermaine and Berry Gordy. Berry Gordy was also, together with Hazel Gordy, the executive producer of the album. It s one of the best albums Jermaine released during his career. In the U.S. the album reached #9 in the R&B chart and #46 in the Pop chart. The album contains ten tracks and it starts with the song Let Me Tickle Your Fancy, with background vocals of the band DEVO. The song was released as a single in the U.S. and other countries around the world. The song became a big hit. Also the second song of the album, called Very Special Part, was released in the U.S. as a single. Just like the previous two song, also the third song was an up tempo Pop song, called Uh Uh, I Didn t Do It, which was released in Germany as a single. Number four on the album was a soulful duet with the singer Syreeta. The song was called You Belong To Me. Jermaine would record two more duets with Syreeta during his career. In 1983 the song Once Love Touches Your Life for Syreeta her album called The Spell and in 1992 the song Stay With Love for the soundtrack of the TV mini series The Jacksons: An American Dream. Another soulful track on the album was the song You Moved A Mountain, which was released in the U.K. as a single. The B-side starts with the up tempo songs Running and Messing Around. The song This Time was a more funky song which was followed by the track There s A Better Way. The last song on the album had the same title as Jermaine s previous album I Like Your Style. Interesting since there was no title track on that album. 57

1.1 The Motown Years 1.1 The Motown Years Let Me Tickle Your Fancy, 7 singles From Jermaine s last Motown album, two U.S. singles were released. The first single was the album title track Let Me Tickle Your Fancy. It was released in July 1982 in a regular white sleeve and came with the song Maybe Next Time on the B-side, which came from Jermaine s previous album I Like Your Style. The single became a big hit in the U.S., where it reached #5 in the R&B chart and #18 in the Pop chart. The single was also released in the Europe and Japan, where it came in various picture sleeves. The U.K. release came in a company sleeve. Let Me Tickle Your Fancy - Printed in France, 1982 (101 682) The second single from the album Let Me Tickle Your Fancy was released in November 1982 and was the song Very Special Part. Again the single was released in a regular white sleeve and with the song You re Givin Me The Runaround from the album I Like Your Style on the B-side. In the U.S. the single reached #54 in the R&B chart, but didn t reach the Pop chart. The single was also released in the U.K., where it came in a nice picture sleeve. Another song from the album Let Me Tickle Your Fancy was released as a single, but in the U.K. only. It was the song You Moved A Mountain, which came in a company sleeve, with the song Running on the B-side. Unfortunately the single didn't reached the U.K. charts. Also in Germany another single was released, which was the song Uh Uh, I didn t Do It. On the B-side was track number ten from the album Let Me Tickle Your Fancy, which was the song I Like Your Style. 1.3 The LaFace Years You Said October, 1991 The last solo album of Jermaine was released in October 1991, and was called You Said. For this album Jermaine worked with a new team of writers and producers called The LaFace Family, which consisted of L.A. Reid, Babyface, Daryl Simmons and Kayo. On some tracks Jermaine contributed with the writing process. The album didn t do so well in the charts. It reached #39 in the R&B chart, although it is one of Jermaine s best albums. Maybe the album was overshadowed because of the controversy that was caused over a song Jermaine wrote about his brother Michael. The song was called Word To The Badd!! and contains lyrics criticizing Michael on having plastic surgery, changing the color of his skin and living a selfish life. The song was leaked to the Los Angeles radio station KPWR. The DJ played the song continuously in alternation with Michaels new single Black Or White, from his upcoming album called Dangerous. In the U.S. the original version of Word To The Badd!! was not released on the album because of the attacking lyrics towards Michael. Instead a new version of the song, with alternate lyrics, was recorded. However in Europe and Japan the original version and album version did appear on the album, making the amount of tracks fourteen instead of twelve in the U.S. release. Strange is though, if the song Word To The Badd!! was cut from the album, why was there a promo single released with a real picture cover. But despite this controversial song, there are great tracks on the album. The first track on the album was the great Pop song You Said, You Said, which was also released as a single in the U.S., Europe and Japan. A videoclip was shot to accompany the single. The song was written by L.A. Reid, Babyface, Daryll Simmons and Jermaine Jackson. Number two on the album was the song Rebel (With A Cause), what was quite an autobiographical song, in which Jermaine sings about him leaving The Jackson 5 and that the family didn t approve of that. Also this song was written by the same team that wrote You Said, You Said. The next song, called I Dream, I Dream starts with a 0:25 minute prelude. That song was also released as a single, but in the U.S. only. Also a videoclip was shot for this single. Number five on the album was the soulful song We re Making Whoopee, followed by the track Treat You Right which features Babyface. In Europe and Japan the next track is the prelude and original version of Word To The Badd!!. On the U.S. album it was continued with the song A Lovers Holiday, which was written by L.A. Reid, Babyface, Daryll Simmons A shot from the videoclip You Said, You Said and Jermaine Jackson. This soft Pop song was followed by three more soulful songs called Secrets, True Lovers and Don t You Deserve Someone. The last two tracks on the album were the album version of Word To The Badd!! and a 7:02 minutes long extended remix of You Said, You Said. 93

Jermaine Jackson with The Jackson 5 chapter 3

3.1 Albums 3.1 Albums Chapter 3 :: Jermaine Jackson with The Jackson 5 3.1 Albums In the active years of The Jackson 5 at Motown Records, which was between 1969 and 1975, the group released 13 albums. Not all of them were studio albums. For example in 1971, an album of the TV special Goin Back To Indiana was released, which contains live music from a concert in Gary, Indiana and music from performances and TV sketches of the TV show. Later that year the first greatest hits album was released and in 1973 a live album was released in Japan only of one of the concerts in Japan. Young legends The first album of The Jackson 5 was released in 1969 and it had the smart introducing title Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5. On the album was the first of many #1 singles I Want You Back, which was released two months before the album. In the next year The Jackson 5 would reach the #1 spot two times with the singles, ABC and The Love You Save, which were taken from the next album called ABC. The fourth single also became a #1 hit and was called I ll Be There. The song came from the third studio album of The Jackson 5, called Third Album. The second single from that album, called Mama s Pearl, which was also the opening tune of the cartoon about the group what aired on TV each Saturday morning, reached the #2 spot. Later in the year 1970, just one year after their debut album, The Jackson 5 released their fourth album, which was a Christmas album. In April 1971 the album Maybe Tomorrow was released, with the two singles Maybe Tomorrow and the #1 in the R&B chart Never Can Say Goodbye. The album also contains some great lead vocals of Jermaine on the song She s Good, 16 Candles and I Will Find A Way. Later that year in September the group released a soundtrack album of a TV show they did, called Goin Back To Indiana. No singles were released from that album. In December the first greatest hits album was released, simply called Greatest Hits. The album contains eleven tracks, including one new track Sugar Daddy, which was released as a single, with a song on the B-side that hasn t been released on an album, called I m So Happy. The single reached the #3 position in the R&B chart and the #10 in the Pop chart. A new studio album was released in May 1972, called Lookin Through The Windows. In the U.S. two singles were issued from the album. In April the first single Little Bitty Pretty One which reached #8 in the R&B chart and #13 in the Pop chart. Two months later in June, the title track of the album was released as a single. The B-side of the single hasn t been released on an album and was called Love Song. The single reached #5 in the R&B chart and #16 in the Pop chart. In the U.K. another single was released in May, which was the song Doctor My Eyes. It reached the #9 position in the Pop chart. In October 1972 the song Corner Of The Sky was released as a single and it was later included on the new album Skywriter, which was released in March 1973. In February the single Hallelujah Day was released. In July of 1973 in Japan a live album was released of a concert in Japan. The album was called In Japan!. Among the tracklist are three live performances of Jermaine from his first solo album Jermaine. The songs were Daddy s Home, That s how Love Goes and Ain t That Peculiar. The last few singles chart notations were disappointing and didn t live up to the chart results The Jackson 5 were used to. The group had to reinvent them self and the group felt they had to make more mature music. With their next three albums the group went into a new direction music wise. The sound became more Funky and more Disco. Their album Get It Together was released in September 1973. Two singles were released from the album. In August the title song of the album was released as a single and reached #2 in the R&B chart and #28 in the Pop chart. The B-side of the single was the soulful song Touch from the previous album Skywriter. The following single was the huge hit Dancing Machine, which was released in February 1974. The singles reached the #1 position in the R&B chart and #2 in the Pop chart. Because of the success of the single the next album would get the same title and an remixed version of Dancing Machine was put on the album. In the U.S. two more singles were released from the album. First the dance able Whatever You Got I Want, which was released in June 1974 and reached #3 in the R&B chart and #38 in the Pop chart. The opening track of the album, which was the soulful song I Am Love with lead vocals of Jermaine and Michael, was released as a single in December 1974 and reached #5 in the R&B chart and #15 in the Pop chart. In the U.K. another single was released, which was the energetic song The Life Of The Party. In this song Jermaine and Michael share the lead. In May 1975, a month before The Jackson 5 would announce to leave Motown Records, the last official album called Moving Violation was released. There was only one single issued from the album, which was the song Forever Came Today and on the B-side All I Do Is Think Of You. The single was released in June 1975, and reached the #6 position in the R&B chart and #60 in the Pop chart. Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5 - Album, 1969 1. Zip-A-Dee Doo-Dah 2. Nobody 3. The clips of Nothin (That Compares 2 U) and Art Of Madness were nice, but not as special as the videoclip of the single 2300 Jackson Street. Just like in the song, the whole Jackson family appears also in the videoclip. Well, not the whole family, Marlon s family, who does appear in the song, is missing in the videoclip, and Jermaine s two year younger sister LaToya doesn t appear in the clip as well. The videoclip was shot on one of the Jackson family days in the house of Tito Jackson. jermaine jackson: Discography! By Maarten Mulder It was at the age of ten when Jermaine Jackson started to perform with his brothers in the band The Jackson 5. First they performed on talent shows and in pubs. It was in 1968, when the brothers where discovered by Motown Records and obtained a contract. During the years with Motown The Jackson 5 would became one of the most successful recording groups in music history, with their first four singles reaching #1. While Jermaine was still performing with The Jackson 5, he released two solo albums. In 1975, when four brothers moved to CBS records, Jermaine stayed at Motown to work on his solo career. During his career he released 13 solo albums, each of them with great music. This book shows the music Jermaine Jackson has made during his career as a solo artist, a group member of The Jackson 5 and The Jacksons, and as a guest on albums of other artists. The book is filled with cover scans of albums and singles from all over the world, that comes from my personal collection.
