Trondheim, 28 June 2006 ICES 16: Call for papers The 16th International Conference of Ethiopian Studies (ICES 16) will be held in Trondheim, Norway, 2-6 July 2007. The deadline for submitting the preliminary registration form on our web site is 1 October 2006. ICES has a strong tradition of bringing together scholars of Ethiopian studies from all over the world. It is thematically broad, with a focus on the humanities and social sciences. In recent years the number of participants has been growing rapidly. The last conference in Hamburg (2003) had some 400 participants. We do not intend to surpass the recent conferences in the number of participants. Financial and organizational constraints make that impossible. We aim at no more than 200 participants. All papers will be assessed by referees. We shall also be strict on the deadlines, especially the final deadline for submitting the paper to be published on our web site. Only those who submit their paper by the deadline will be included in the conference program and proceedings. Most of the work in the ICES conference takes place in parallel panels covering such fields as archaeology, art history and arts, history, religion and philosophy, anthropology, development and environment, law and politics, linguistics, and literature. The specific panels and the design of the programme will depend on the response to the current call. We invite scholars or groups of scholars to suggest panels or sessions within panels. We would also like to identify panel chairpersons or committees at an early stage and involve them actively in the planning process. We shall use the internet to facilitate preparations. Programme, abstracts and papers will be made available at our web site well before the conference. Since the papers will be available on our web site, there will be no pre-proceedings or physical papers handed out in each session. You are expected to have read the papers before the session. You may in any case download the paper before, during or after the conference. The section on our web site hosting the papers will be password protected to indicate that these are draft papers. After the conference, the final papers will be published on our web site and in a simple form by way of proceedings. Papers will be peer reviewed, but detailed editing will largely be the responsibility of the contributor. We shall not put much effort into editing the proceedings, but rather invite you to use the conference as a platform for launching book ideas and to identify contributors to such projects. Panel committees are encouraged to take an active role. ICES has always brought together colleagues from all corners of the world. This is a unique opportunity to realise innovative ideas. Sincerely yours, Svein Ege
ICES 16: Key points Announcement This call for abstract is sent to the e-mail address of those who participated at the Hamburg conference. This is not a complete list, and in any cases, e-mail addresses may have changed. We therefore ask you to inform colleagues who might be interested. Web site News about the conference, registration information, hotels etc. will be posted at our web site. We also aim to publish the programme, abstracts of papers and draft papers here. This will be our main instrument for communicating with the participants in the period leading up to the conference. Web site: www.svt.ntnu.no/ices2007 E-mail: ices2007@svt.ntnu.no Conference fee The conference fee will be 100 Euro. Students will pay 50 Euro. Travel grants There will be a limited number of travel grants available for participants from Ethiopia. The selection will be handled by a committee appointed by the Institute of Ethiopian Studies. The IES will also make the local announcement about the procedures to follow. The committee in Trondheim has no other funds for inviting participants. Ethiopian scholars with independent funds should follow the international procedure for registration. At the time of writing, we are very short of funds to invite Ethiopian colleagues, and we hope that those of you with a project in Ethiopia seriously consider the possibility of sending participants to ICES. Deadlines 1 October 2006 Registration of interest: submitting title and abstract of paper (can be revised later) 1 Dec. 2006 Response from us that your topic has been accepted 1 March 2007 Formal registration by you, booking hotels etc. 1 May 2007 Submitting paper, together with the final title and abstract 2-6 July 2007 Conference
About registration To qualify for participation you have to fill in the registration form which is posted on our web site, www.svt.ntnu.no/ices2007. This represents a preliminary registration of interest and topic. Please note the following: The summary will be a main instrument for planning the conference. Therefore, make a concise summary of your paper. The preliminary abstract will be used for detailed planning. The final abstract (as submitted together with the full paper), will be printed, as well as published on our web site. The final abstract should not exceed 500 words, but we recommend that it is close to the maximum limit. Abstracts will be published with one page per abstract. Panels The conference is traditionally organised mainly in disciplinary panels. We open up for a more thematic approach and invite you to propose thematic panels. These may last for the whole conference or for a shorter period; they may be sub-panels within a discipline or they may span several disciplines. At this stage we want your ideas to help us in planning a stimulating conference. This does not involve any responsibility on your part, but we would very much appreciate your active participation. We would like to decentralise the planning of panels and therefore also invite your suggestions for who could be asked to serve on the panel committee. Announcements for panels may be posted on our web site. Finally we ask for you help in identifying stimulating keynote speakers from various fields of Ethiopian studies. We ask you to kindly use the format below as a model. Suggestion for panel Panel title: Motivation / description: Potential members of the panel committee: Suggested keynote speakers
