Island of Dr. Moreau Monkey Written By: Alyssa Karnes

It s always a party in my jungle! SFX: Party music starts. Mmmm. You feel that beat. Nothing better I tell ya, nothing better. Hello, King Felix! Hello, young one! What can I, King Felix, do for you today? I ve brought you a gift! I found it in the jungle. It s one of man s inventions. Man is such a drag. Always digging the holes and singing the sad song. But let me see what you have for me SFX: Metal clashing together, musically. This! This is what I like to hear! Wonderful wonderful SFX: Quieter clashing, but King is still playing with new toy. I have one more thing Have you ever eaten something upside down? Does the food go to my head instead of my stomach? Well I wondering if you could help me with I had a dream last night. I had the biggest mango in the entire world. I was eating the mango such a good mango, the BEST mango but as I was eating the mango, my stomach grew bigger and my head grew smaller. I m not really sure, but I ve been having problems with these other monkeys and I fear my head is shrinking! I must go find the Witch Doctor!

SFX: Tinkering with watch. Maybe if I just...twist a little...or if I SFX: Group of Monkeys walk in Well, well, well if it isn t Monkey playing with more human garbage. What did you find this time, Monkey? SFX: Other groups members snicker MEMBER 1: Yeah, what is it this time? (Still tinkering, distracted) Uhm, I think it s some sort of counting device. SFX: More tinkering with watch. A counter? How stupid! SFX: Pack leader grabbing watch out of Monkey s hands. Hey! Give that back! Want it? You ll have to-- SFX: PACK LEADER THROWS TO MEMBER 1 --Catch it! SFX: Watch being thrown, under. MEMBER 2: Yeah, try and catch THIS Monkey!

(While jumping, attempting to catch it) Just give it back to me-- This isn t loud like the others-- Come on! SFX: Enter KING FELIX, hum/singing tune. (Obviously oblivious) Well, hello! What s going on here fellas. Some sort of game? Yes, KING FELIX. We are just playing a game of keepaway with our friend Monkey, here. Aaaahh, keepaway. One of my favorite games when I was a wee one. Well, carry on boys! (sigh of defeat) SFX: Leave KING FELIX, hum/singing tune. Why do I have to be a monkey? They just don t get it. All these things I find they re incredible. No monkey could ever make something like that! But it s all getting the next banana, and picking the bugs off the guy in front of you. Well, I m tired of it! If I were a man geez, I would do great things! I could make MORE counting devices, and MORE noise makers. SFX: Scuffles in the bushes. Whaa who s there? SFX: Enter little boy, speaking gibberish. (small gasp in disbelief) I can t believe it It s a small man cub! Hi little cub, what are you doing way down here? LITTLE BOY: (still speaks gibberish not understandable to monkey)

Urgh, I don t understand this kind of human speak. (Gasps, imagine a lightbulb over head). Of course! He can be the way I get the other monkeys to understand! They ve never seen one up close before this has to work! Come on, little fella. I m going to take you to see the KING. SFX: Monkey picks up Little Boy, Little Boy laughs. Exit into jungle. SFX: Enter Party music, under. Monkey chatter, under. (Singing and laughing to music) (aside) Great, they re already all here. Look who s come to join the party! It s YOUNG MONKEY! SFX: Little boy giggles. And he s brought a little man cub with him! SFX: Party Music quiets, Monkey chatter stops. KING FELIX continues to hum/sing in the back, questions someone about food/dance/song/the like. I ve-- I ve brought him, so you can-- to help you understand that So that what? We ll love the humans as much as you do? LITTLE BOY: (Making Monkey sounds) Bandaar! Ooh-ooh-ah-ah Look! He s even mocking us! SFX: Monkey crowd wallah, begins to rise. MEMBER 1: Yeah, who does this human think he is? Let s show him how monkeys really are! No! Don t! He s just a cub!

SFX: Monkey wallah full volume, chaos. MEMBER 2: Monkey s getting away with the boy! SFX: Little boy laughing, fades (as monkey runs away with him) GET HIM! SFX: Exit Monkey crowd Where d the party go? Hm.(moves on to next thing) If I were to eat something hanging upside down, would it get stuck inside my head? SFX: Hunter adjusting positioning in bush. Mind, why must you torment me so? I am burdened with guilt by the task I have laid before me --But so much enjoyment in the pursuit. I do not wish to bring harm to any more creatures. ---But I love the hunt. Is it right what Moreau does to the ones I bring him? Is his surgeon s knife any better than what mine would bring? But this particular creature has caused so much fear within the village. He comes close to their homes, and is not fearful of man and fire like the other monkeys. And now that little boy is missing. One can only assume he is the cause. SFX: Enter Monkey, fleeing through forest. There he is. And the young boy is on his back. SFX: Hunter begins chasing after monkey, boots thumping. If there s any creature deserving of Moreau, it is this one here. SFX: Monkey stops. Catches breath. Sighs in relief. SFX: Hunter s boots slow down, eventually coming to a stop.

I am sorry friend. I should have never taken you to my home. I thought you could help them see. Change their minds. I must be careful not to harm the boy... r any other man. There, he is putting him down. And he sees his home in the distance---go little one. It s time I face the facts. You must go home to your village and never return. SFX: Exit Little Boy. There, the boy is out of range. For I am a monkey. Not a man. This is my hunt. I will not kill. I am a monkey It is better this way. SFX: Tranquilizer dart shot, monkey falls. SFX: Hunter walks closer. How d you like to become a man, monkey?
