BIOGRAPHIES THE WHITLAMS The Whitlams have become a cornerstone of the Australian cultural landscape. Formed in 1992 in Newtown as an acoustic three-piece with no drummer, Tim Freedman, Stevie Plunder and Andy Lewis developed their songs on Saturday afternoons at the Sandringham Hotel in King Street. In 1993 they discovered that they and their gear could all fit into a Kingswood station wagon. Taking turns lying on the piano in the back, they headed off every six weeks up the Eastern coast and became a real band. Later that year they released the jaunty Introducing The Whitlams. In 1998 they were nominated for eight ARIA awards and won Best Group (presented by former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam), Song of the Year (No Aphrodisiac) and Best Independent Release (Eternal Nightcap). More recently Eternal Nightcap was voted number 16 in triple j s Hottest Australian Albums of All Time. The current line-up is 13 years old. Terepai first appeared on Love this City (1999), and Warwick Hornby and Jak Housden on the number one album Torch the Moon (2002). The Whitlams recorded output includes six studio albums, three of which went platinum and two gold. Their best of compilation Truth, Beauty and a Picture of You was released in 2008. thewhitlams.com BENJAMIN NORTHEY Conductor Leading Australian conductor Benjamin Northey is one of Australia s brightest and most versatile musical stars. In 2001, under the Symphony Australia Conductor Development Program, he studied intensively with Finnish maestro Jorma Panula. Within Australia, Northey made his professional debut with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) in 2003. Since returning permanently in 2006, Northey has been a regular guest conductor with all the Australian state symphony orchestras and led opera and ballet productions including L elisir d Amore, The Tales of Hoffmann and La Sonnambula for State Opera of South Australia and Don Giovanni and Cosi fan tutte for Opera Australia. In 2010, Northey conducted a major program with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Festival Hall and made his debut with London s Southbank Sinfonia. Currently Associate Conductor at MSO, Northey s future engagements include concerts with all of Australia s and New Zealand s major symphony orchestras as well as appearances in Hong Kong and South America. benjaminnorthey.com

THE WHITLAMS & WASO STORY The West Australian Symphony Orchestra is renowned for being at the cutting edge of Australian music, creating a new tradition of orchestrated pop over the last decade. Following the first and incredibly successful pop collaboration with george in 2003, WASO developed what was to be another successful collaboration with The Whitlams in 2004. The 2004 concerts were performed in Kings Park and including 11 new arrangements of the band s songs, The Whitlams, 2004. commissioned by WASO. Following these performances The Whitlams went on to perform with the Adelaide, Tasmanian, Queensland and Sydney symphony orchestras. In 2007, The Whitlams returned to Perth for more performances with WASO, including five new orchestral arrangements commissioned by the Orchestra. Following the success of The Whitlams performances in 2004, WASO continued a successful run of pop collaborations with Tim Rogers & Tex Perkins, Ben Folds, Augie March, Ben Lee and The Panics.
