ABSTRACT The study focuses on the use of figurative language in a poem. The study entitled Figurative Language in Robert Frost Poem Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening analyze about the types figurative language and their meaning in the poem. This research aims to describe the figure of speech used in Robert Frost s poem. The problem in this research include the following : (1) What kinds of figurative language are poem Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening? (2) What are the meaning of the figurative language in the poem Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening?. Figurative language is one of the elements of poetry that serves as the poet s way of expressing the art of his poems and conveying the messages to the readers. It needs a clear understanding of figurative language to know the poet s idea. The poem of Robert Frost s poem were taken primary data in this study namely Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening. The method adopted in collecting the data is documentation and the technique is data analysis. And the method adopted in the analysis is qualitative method to describe each figure of speech to reveal the messages of the poem. The main theory used in the analysis of data is theory of poetry especially that about figurative language proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963). They state that Figurative Language is sometimes called metaphorical language or simply metaphor because its Greek ancestor metepherein means to carry meaning beyond its literal meaning. The finding shows that the types of figurative language found in Robert Frost s poem are including : personification, metaphor, hyperbole, and symbol. These figures of speech are used for make a degree of exaggeration for its hidden idea and to make the language in the poems more beautiful and interesting, so that it can be understood by the readers.
