Heartfelt thanks to each and every members of the Association for electing me as the Secretary of Madras Library Association. I am deeply indebted to thank all the Office Bearers of Madras Library Association for extending their fullest cooperation towards the activities of MALA. It is glad to share that MALA has successfully conducted four events and hope that many more events are blooming to come. We have started issuing the Smart Card for the members and released the Newsletter. We feel proud to say that we have launched the MALA Whataspp for the benefit of Library & Information Science Professionals. Our future plans are to renovate the office, Update the Websites, raising funds from Raja Ram Mohun Roy Library Foundation, getting the ISBN and ISSN Number for the publications of MALA. All these could be achieved only by hard work, support and team spirit of our office bearers, and I take this opportunity and request all of them to share their innovative thoughts towards revamping the Madras Library Association.. MALA ACTIVITIES

Dr.A.Amudavalli, Professor & Head, Dept of Library and Information Science narrated the following points in her speech on Nurture the Nation for Life Long Learning Librarians/Information Professionals should be fully prepared to work in the competitive environment which has become essential for their survival. Librarian should acquire what kind of knowledge is required by the organization and on that basis he/she should work in a focused way. Today, we all agree that to cope with the changing dimensions, the emphasis has shifted from continuous training to continuous learning which helps in continuous development to satisfy the Librarians role. Basic Qualities of Library Staff: The Librarian should try to find out the aptitudes of the prospective employees because unless the Library work suits their proper output service cannot be saved. Librarian should have the ability to deliver the information to the concerned user. Care should be taken that persons with appropriate qualification for the particular post should be selected for the particular job. Some important points to be noted as follows: 1. The prospective employee should be adequately qualified and experienced one to perform the necessary jobs. 2. He or She should regularly read some books for acquiring knowledge and pleasure. 3. The prospective employee should have love for books and humanity. 4. Librarian should have the capability of nurturing the users to remove their difficulties. 5. He / She should be innovative, creative and should not sit back. 6. He / She should cultivate the habit of lifelong learning to look young.

7. He /She should have clear focus in domain knowledge to clarify the problems. 8. He / She should be heterogeneous and ability to provide the information in multi discipline levels. 9. Librarian s role should be large and it has to be dynamic. Lack of Resources: Library and Information Professionals are lacking certain resources needed to perform day to day activity. KASH is the key word to the librarian in order to perform their jobs. KASH stands for K Knowledge A Attitude S Skill H Habit Knowledge: Librarian should have the diversified knowledge to meet their requirements. He / She should have broad knowledge in multi-disciplinary subjects. Habit of nurturing themselves is very important in the competitive environment. Attitude: Librarian should not possess caricature and should have pleasant smiling face. He / She should have the positive energy. Librarian should have the ability to correct themselves if anything goes wrong in their way. Since library is an open house, librarian should have the tendency to work with all generation of people. Skill: Librarian should acquire / inherent skills in doing a particular job. They should not rude to the user. Ethics is very important. Habit: Librarian should have courtesy towards the user. Lacking of confidence quality leads to poor performance in their job. Continuous updating of knowledge and reading habit is required to meet the competitive environment successfully.

Conclusion: Today we all agree that to cope with the changing dimensions, the emphasis has shifted from continuous training to continuous learning to acquire the above basic qualities which helps to perform the librarian s role. They should aim to become successful Librarian in this compatible environment. MALA ACTIVITIES

The Madras Library Association and IIT jointly organized the Lecture on Recent Trends on Scientometrics and Research Methodology on 16/03/2016. The Programme was started with Welcome address by DR.K.Nithyanandam, Presdient of MALA. Followed by this the delegates were honoured. Dr.A.Amudavalli, Professor & Head, Dept of Library and Information Science released the MALA Smart Card for Life Membership. Prof. Dr. S.L. Sangam, Emeritus Fellow, Karnataka University was the master of this programme. He gave a wonderful powerpoint speech from Bibliometrics to Altermetrics. He differentiated the types of metrics used in Library and Information Science and how these measurement could be applied by Librarians. On the same day, the release of MALA NewsLetter was made by Ret.Prof.Manorama Srinath, University of Madras, Chennai. The Secretary, MALA delivered with the Vote of Thanks. Certificates were issued to the participants by the Legends of the event.
