PIATTAFORME INDUSTRIALI DIGITALI EUROPEE Il contributo dei progetti CREATE-IoT e MONICA Giornata Nazionale di Lancio dei Bandi 2018-2020 in Horizon 2020 - LEIT ICT MAURIZIO A. SPIRITO Istituto Superiore Mario Boella (ISMB), Torino 24 Novembre 2017, Roma
IOT PLATFORMS: STATUS QUO AND CHALLENGE In the IoT sector a complete zoo of platforms exists and the domain is dominated by the US. Although there are 3BEuros of investment in national IoT strategies, national initiatives addressing platform building will not be able to compete at a global level as there is insufficient home user base. Many startups are created, but they are prone to takeover when they mature. In order to compete there is a pressing need for Europe to co-ordinate activities to create critical mass and avoid fragmentation and silos. DIGITAL INDUSTRIAL IOT PLATFORMS: NEEDS & EXPECTATIONS - 1 PLATFORM BUILDING CONNECT REGIONAL AND NATIONAL INITIATIVES ACROSS EU (INCLUDING HUBS) Engage more easily with innovative SMEs and start-ups, which naturally engage more with regional and national initiatives Increase overall user base to increase international competitiveness OPEN PLATFORMS INTEROPERABLE ACROSS VERTICALS AVOID SILOS AND VENDOR LOCK-IN REDUCE BARRIERS BUILD TRUST Foster a free marketplace for IoT services and applications Reduce dependencies and barriers to mobilize 3rd party contributions (new business and SMEs) Generate trust by combining privacy and end-to-end security with local reasoning Data aggregated, shared and valorized across the value chains enables new business models Bring the EU ecosystem together to address several sectors: PPPs (e. g., SPARC, FoF, 5G), JTIs, EIPs, KICs Policy makers should adapt the regulatory framework to address new challenges for security, liability, and rights to access and process data Source: Digitising European Industry: Working Group 2 Digital Industrial Platforms
DIGITAL INDUSTRIAL IOT PLATFORMS: NEEDS & EXPECTATIONS - 2 PROMOTION OF STANDARDS CONVERGENCE OF EXISTING STANDARDS, NO NEW STANDARDS Address interoperability between commercial or non-commercial platforms PROMOTE INDUSTRIAL PARTNERSHIP CREATE A CRITICAL MASS OF STAKEHOLDERS Promote a dialogue between large companies and SMEs Achieve consensus on platform up-scaling Discuss legal issues, technical bottlenecks and market barriers SUPPORTING LARGE EXPERIMENTAL FACILITIES TEST STANDARDS AND ARCHITECTURES CONVERGE TO FEWER OPEN PLATFORMS DEMONSTRATE FEDERATION AND INTEROPERABILITY Involve small SMEs and start-ups to address new business opportunities and business models (Open Calls) Access to facilities under FRAND (Fair, Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory) economic and legal conditions Implementation/replication across Member States, verticals and societal challenges avoids fragmentation and favors uptake Promote data sharing with test beds Source: Digitising European Industry: Working Group 2 Digital Industrial Platforms
